Drina smiled and took his other hand and kissed his palm pressing it to her cheek "I'm sure you will be...you had a good father as an example. I on the other hand will just have to figure it out on my own...maybe Mary will help."
Jay nodded slowly, smiling down at her. "I'm sure Mary would love to help." He agreed, nodding. "She's had more experience than either of us have." He shrugged.
-a couple of months later-Jay and Drina were thriving at the house, she had sold many paintings which kept her occupied while she was housebound. She was exhausted nearly every day and found herself in bed most of the time. She pet Georgia as she lay at her feet also swollen with puppies.
Stefan was growing away from his depression and he was functioning well around the house and caring for his son who was growing up too fast for his liking. Rayna was working on a spell to restore his eyesight but only managed to get him sight at sunset until the sun was gone.
Jay carried in a tray from the kitchen, smiling at Drina as he did so. He set down a glass of milk by her and then sat in an armchair near the fire, near her and drank his own milk, watching the flames leap and dance. "How are you my dear?"Charlotte had been working hard. She took on only one job at first as they lived off the gold, but once it had run out, she had to take up two more, and rarely was at the house anymore, working as hard as she could to maintain their family until they could find someway to get Stefan's sight back.
Drina smiled and sipped at the milk gratefully, she sat up slowly using the pillows to support her back "I'm ok...it's beautiful outside. I wish I could just sit in the garden...but Georgia and I are bedridden..."Stefan slowly felt around the wall trying to feel his way to Tide's room "it is nearly your day of birth son, would you like a celebration? Maybe with some friends from boarding school?"
Jay smiled a little and sighed softly. "I'd carry you out there, if you wished." He offered. "But I don't want to put any unnecessary strain on you. Poor ole Freddie is a bit out of wack. Keeps howling in the kennels." He said, smiling a little. Tide looked up from his colouring and smiled brightly. "Sure Dad, that would be lovely. Can I send out invitations?" He asked hopefully. "I'd love a celebration. Do you think Mom will stick around for it?" He asked. He rarely saw his mother for longer than a few moments.
Drina smiled "he's as stressed as you are about being a father! Let him come in...I doubt he'll do any harm...Georgia needs him as I need you, imagining if someone locked you away from me?"Stefan nodded "Ill make sure that she can...I know its been hard on you, and I want you to know how proud I am of you...you are growing into a fine young man."
Jay sighed softly. "You're right as usual. I would never bear being locked away from you." He said, kissing her cheek as he left to let Freddie out of the kennels. The dog leaped into the house, running down the hallways to find Georgia. Jay sighed. "Walk Freddie! You'll scratch the floor!" He smiled a little when he saw Drina again. "Happy?" he asked. Tide smiled brightly. "Thanks Dad." he said softly. "That means a lot." He got up and gave his father a hug, smiling up at him. "I love you."
Drina laughed as the hyped dog lay by Grorgia, licking her face and nuzzling his nose against her stomach "very...that is true love right there." She took deep breaths and closed her eyes holding his hand to her "I worry that every cramp is the start of labor...I'm scared Jay...my mother died..."Stefan hugged him close "I love you more...now tell me about this little girlfriend of yours...I found s note in your satchel, how is it that you find a girl in an all boys boarding school?"
Jay stood by her, nervous. "I'll do everything in my power to make it go smoothly." He promised. "It's getting close, isn't it?" He asked, trying to prepare himself. Tide blushed deeply, glad his father couldnt see it this time. "Uh.... haha... I was.... going to... uh..... tell you about that......" He stammered. "Eventually."
Drina nodded and leaned on his shoulder "very..." she whispered quietly closing her eyes "the nursery is prepared and the doctors are prepared...but I don't feel ready!"Stefan raised a brow sitting on his bed "now is as good of time as any...I may be blind but there is little you can hide from me."
Jay nodded, swallowing. He hid his own nervousness and squeezed her hand gently. "You'll do great. It's going to be ok." He promised, kissing her cheek. "I'll be here the whole time I promise. and just think, we'll be parents!"Tide folded and unfolded his hands awkwardly. "Her school is another boarding school. Our 'sister' school." He explained. "They visit us for sports tournaments, and vice versa. We... just started talking I suppose..." He said honestly.
Drina frowned, that wasn't true he couldn't be in the room during the birth. No man could, that was how it was in the caravan as well "but what if something happens..." she couldn't get her mother's birth out of her head. She was in the medical tent screaming all night...her father pacing outside. The midwife came out and there was so much chaos and blur she went into the tent...a sheet was over her mother there was so much blood...Stefan nodded "I see...and I suppose you are feeling things towards her?"
Jay shook his head, not allowing himself to think like that. "It wont Drina. I promise. It wont." he said seriously. "We have very good doctors in this country, they will be able to help keep everything going smoothly." he promised. Tide blushed harder and cleared his throat, tugging at the collar of his shirt. "Yeah... Yeah I am." He said, chewing at his lip.
Drina nodded "I'm sorry for worrying you...it just went so quickly! 9 months of a year, it's hardly enough time to get used to such an idea!" She heard Georgia whimper and howl relentlessly below them "Jay..."Stefan grinned amazed at how much his son was growing up "tell me about her...before your mother accuses me of not getting all the information."
Jay nodded, sighing tiredly. "No it's ok. I understand completely." he assured. Georgia's whimpering brought him back to reality and he moved over to the hound, stroking her head, "Good girl." he cooed. "You're such a good girl."Tide sighed softly, a smile settling on his features. "She's got gorgeous dark brown hair... and her eyes are so deep and chocolatey, and she's funny, and smart, and a great soccer player and lots of fun to hang out with..."
Drina watched worriedly she had lain down whimpering in pain, her tail hardly wagging. Her womb was swollen as the rug started to get wet. Drina watched Freddie get more anxious running around in circles "he knew they were coming." She said quietly amazed.Stefan tried to imagine it, he frowned a bit confused "what is soccer?...she plays athletic sports?" He had never heard such a thing before. But maybe that was what attracted his son.
Jay nodded, smiling a little. "Amazing how they know, isn't it?" he asked, softly, stroking Georgia to help try and keep her calm. "Maybe having Georgia go first is a good thing, you'll know what to expect." He said softly, smiling up at her. Tide laughed softly. "That's right... I guess you wouldn't know. It's this new sport they've been teaching us at school. It's lots of fun. And yes. Sam plays it and she's amazing! One of the few girls who actually does." he said, unable to keep from smiling proudly.
Drina nodded and tried to keep Freddie calm "she's ok boy...you are going to be a daddy soon." She cooed and scratched his ears. She watched Georgia whimper her hind leg kicking as the first pup started to emerge.Stefan blinked, the world certainly was changing "Sam? As in Samantha I assume?" A female going by a male name! "The school officials allow her to play? Don't they worry about injuries?"
Jay was continuously patting Georgia with one hand, waiting with the other to catch the first pup when it was ready. And soon it was. He beamed as a healthy little bundle of fur entered the world and he set the pup against Georgia's stomach to start feeding. "Pup number one is a boy." He said softly, smiling. Tide nodded, rolling his eyes. "Yeah. Samantha. She hates that name." He said seriously. "Injuries? What? You mean her? She never gets hurt. Its any one that's in her way that gets injured." He said, chuckling softly.
Drina gasped in awe at the sweet little guy, he made adorable crying noises until it started to suckle "how sweet!...look at that wittle face!" Freddie sniffed the pup and then licked it "looks like daddy approves!"Stefan was amazed, it was like this girl was trying to be a boy. Was he that old fashioned? "She sounds interesting son."
Jay smiled brightly. "And here comes his sister... no wait, make that sisters..." He said, placing two more pups beside the first. "And two more... one boy and one girl." He said, laying the rest of the pups beside their mother. "Aren't they cute?"Tide looked up. "Interesting? Interesting good? Or interesting bad?" he asked, not quite sure if his father was happy or not.
Drina nodded watching Georgia nuzzle each and clean them up "they are beautiful, going to be good hunting dogs like their parents!" She felt was sharp pain that nearly took her breath away, she ignored it focusing on the pups. "Do we have a warm bed for them?"Stefan smiled "interesting good,just different which I guess I should be used to...invite her to the gala for sure, I'd l ove to meet her."
Jay nodded in assurance. "There's a warm litter box with blankets and pads in the corner." He said. "I'm sure Georgia will move her pups there presently. But for now, I think its best we leave them alone." He said honestly. "How are you my dear?"Tide nodded, smiling again. "I'll invite her." He agreed, excited. "I'm sure she'd like to meet you too. But... what do I say about the... other half of us?" He asked. He had not touched on the merfolk topic yet.
Drina nodded and then winced her breath coming out quickly realizing she was holding her breath "good..." she lied and than shook her head "...not good!"Stefan nodded "let's not bring it up quite yet, unless you are really serious about your relationship...it's something a bit hard to understand."
Jay frowned worriedly. "Drina?" He asked softly as she winced. "What's wrong?" The thought of the baby coming right at this minute was not even a possibility to him. He didn't think it would be this soon. He thought she might just be cramping up or something. Tide nodded in agreement. "Alright." He said, nodding. "That makes sense."
The front door opened and closed then, and Charlotte practically ran in and right to the kitchen. She got started making supper in a whirlwind, as she had fifteen minutes at home before she had to be at work again.
Drina cried out again, gripping onto the sheets with a shaking white hand "call someone...please!" She begged looking at him with scared eyes.Stefan had surprised her, dinner was done and on the table. He just wanted time with her, and so did her son "Char!"
Jay's face drained of colour and he nodded, getting up and running to a tellephone. He twisted in the number for the nearest doctor they had contacted before and waiting impatiently for her to pick up. Charlotte stopped suddenly, in the middle of washing her hands. As if breaking out of the trance she had been in, she turned and looked at Stefan, smiling slowly. "Baby." She breathed, running to hug him tight. All of her actions were rushed. "Missed you." She kissed his forehead.
The nurse answered "hello? You called the emergency line"She looked at the doctor motioning for her to get her bag.
Stefan held her shoulders "stop...dinner is made, I called your work and they are fine with you taking a night off...breathe."
Jay nodded frantically. "My wife is pregnant, Drina? We talked to you about her earlier. She's in pain." He said, all his words rushed. "Can you come?" He asked hopefully. Charlotte watched him for a moment, as if not entirely understanding what he had just said. She had time off? She never had time off. It was almost too hard to believe. Her shoulders sagged in relief. "You made supper?" She asked softly, thrilled.
The nurse nodded "of course! We will be there as soon as possible." She looked at the doctor "it seems like Drina may be starting labor. The husband is very panicked." She explained.Stefan nodded "I did, I wanted to see you! Tide does as well since he is home for the holidays. We were discussing about a birthday celebration.
The doctor nodded, getting her bag ready. "They usually are. Let's head out." She said, going outside. Jay returned to Drina's side, squeezing her hand. "The doctor is on the way." He promised. "She'll be here as soon as possible." He thought about calling Mary and Jude to help them both through this, as he knew he would need mental support, especially if he was expected to be outside of the room during the birth.
Charlotte hugged him tightly. "Thank you Stefan." She whispered. "I would love to have a birthday for him. That would be wonderful."
The nurse got into the carriage as they rushed to the house.Drina leaned into his hand and caressed his cheek "you are more panicked then I am darling...go get yourself some tea."
Stefan kissed her and smiled nuzzling her neck "apparently our son is in love with a girl with a male's name!"
Jay shook his head. "I'm staying by your side for as long as they'll allow me to Drina. I can't not worry right now. I've never had a kid before." He said, squeezing her hand. The doctor knocked on the door and one of Jay's servants answered it, leading her to them. The doctor smiled. "Hello Drina, Jay. I heard you're experiencing pain?" She asked Drina.
Charlotte's eyes widened in surprise. "A girl?" She asked. "Our boy likes a girl? With a male name?" She asked, utterly shocked.
Drina nodded and curled to her side closing her eyes "it's like a pressure...and it doesn't stop it just gets worse!" Stefan nodded "and she enjoys athletic sports! Sam is her name apparently and she dazzles Tide."
The doctor nodded in understanding. "It sounds like you are in labor darling." She said, walking over to start an examination. "Jay I'm afraid you'll have to leave at this point, as is customary."Jay paled a little but nodded, walking slowly out of the room, he looked like he was going to puke.
Charlotte laughed softly. "Our boy, already chasing after girls." She shook her head. "And he's in love? Real love?"
Drina watched him go and was scared as the doctor worked with her "that hurts...oh it hurts!" She cried out and closed her eyes.Mary and Jude came into the house "we heard the doctor came...is she ok?"
Stefan nodded "his energy was passionate, he writes notes to her...I of course can't read them!"
The doctor nodded in understanding. "I know honey, just breathe deeply." She urged, "You're almost in the second stage of labor honey, and doing lovely." she assured. Jay winced when he heard Drina's soft cry thought the door and he looked up at Jude and Mary. "I don't know. It sounds horrible." he mumbled, looking almost green.
Charlotte sighed softly, shaking her head. "has mother made any progress on a spell for you?" She asked gently.
Drina breathed through it and tensed crying out, she gripped onto the sheets tears going down her face "I can't do this!"Mary frowned and looked at the boys "go take him for a drink." She urged Jude.
Stefan sighed "an hour at sunset...but that's it so far. She is trying but apparently it's a spell causing the blindness."
The doctor helped her shift into a half sitting position, getting her supplies ready at the end of the bed. "Nonesense. Of course you can. And you will, just as the countless women that have gone before you." She soothed. Jay tensed, hearing Drina's cry, and his face paled another couple shades. It was taking a whole lot of self control for him not to run right into that room.
Jude nodded slowly, resting his hand on his shoulder. "Lets go get a drink." He said, steering his friend away from the door and into the kitchen. He knew what it was like as he had been in the same position.
Charlotte frowned a little. "A spell?" She asked, shaking her head. "Who would have put the spell there? And why?"
Drina looked over at the tools scared "what are those for?...I thought it was going smoothly!"Mary poured them both a whiskey "breathe Jay...this is nature."
Stefan shook her head "Rayna said it was from the death, an imp curse or something...but it isn't complete darkness anymore there is light and shapes.
The doctor nodded. "It is going smoothly so far dear. But I need to be prepared should things take a turn for the worst." She explained gently. "Just breathe, you're doing fine."Charlotte sucked in a breath. "An imp curse?" Would his own species curse him? she wanted to find out. "So you can see a bit then? Light and shapes?" She asked, peering into the eyes that had been sightless for so long.
Drina nodded and then cried out, and closed her eyes sobbing from the pain and fear "I don't want to do this..."Stefan smiled "I see you...the light in your smile and eyes. I love you...I want you to stop working, I will work."
The doctor rubbed her arm gently. "It's ok you're doing great. You can start pushing here soon darling." She said gently, watching for the baby.Jay groaned and held his head in his hands, hating the sounds of her screams which he could hear even here. "Sure doesn't sound like natural!"
Charlotte smiled, hugging him "I love you baby." She sighed softly, "but I have to keep working. Until you can see completely again."
Drina started to push groaning and crying shaking her head,she was too small and tight.Mary rubbed his arm "maybe you should leave the house, you're torturing yourself listening to her scream."
Stefan shook his head "only one job, ill work the other and Tide can help around the house. He misses you a lot."
The doctor nodded, patting her leg. "Good girl, keep pushing." She urged, hoping she would stretch more and the baby would slide out. Jay nodded a little numbly, walking to the door, but he couldn't make himself go further, he had to stay within a good distance of her, so that he could run to her if she needed him.
Charlotte sighed softly. "Stefan... I don't want you working yourself out when you still can't see very well. Besides, Tide needs someone at home, not both of us gone. I can do this, don't worry."
Drina felt herself rip, she screamed and shut her legs "no it hurts too much!"Mary frowned that scream didn't sound good.
Stefan shook his head "just stop!" He said frustrated "let me help, I'm not an invalid you have to take care of."
The doctor sighed softly, "Don't tense up darling, you'll make it worse." She urged. It wasn't unheard of for a women to rip. "I'd rather not preform a c section on you dear, the results so far have not been good. The baby has to come out that way, please just try to relax." She said, as she talked, she worked her head around the babies body that was trying to push out the wrong way, which is why Drina tore.Jay looked positively sick. "I'm not going to be able to stay out here much longer." He muttered.
((hmm... should I make Charlotte give in? no. That's not dramatic enough XP))
Charlotte sighed in exasperation. "I'm not treating you as an invalid! I just worry about you! You're not totally well Stefan, you can't deny that. Let me take care of you ok? Just until you don't need it any more."
Drina shook her head feeling sick "I need Jay..." She muttered over and over, she tore all the way through as the baby started to crown.((Good girl :) ))
Stefan shook his head angrily, he was a prideful man and every bit of self dignity was getting taken away. "Fine...the blind fool will be in his room." He stormed to his bedroom.
Charlotte nodded. "Sleep well my love." She whispered, kissing him back. "I will be back soon." She promised, and left to check on Tide.
