Melissa Ramirez (melissaramirez) | 51 comments Ok then...I guess I'll see if anyone wants to help me out, here... :)

See, there's this girl in my math class (also my film class) and literally ALL she talks about is "Ghostbusters". Y'know, from the 1980's? Yeah.
So all she ever talks about and wants to talk about is "Ghostbusters"! And I really don't know what to do about it. I've tried the smiling and nodding technique, where you don't really say much, but just smile and nod. I've tried actually contributing to the conversation, but this doesn't really work because it's been like five years since I've seen the movie. I've tried just ignoring her, but then she gets mad and starts staring at me really intently.

Any other ideas? She's a nice girl, but I. Just. Can't. Talk. About. Ghostbusters. Anymore.

Melissa Ramirez (melissaramirez) | 51 comments Thanks, I'll try talking to her, and see what goes down. Could be an easy fix! :)

As for your troubles...you need to let them know, point blank, that taking your stuff is not okay with you. They probably do it because they either know it annoys you, or because they are just immature and silly.
Tell them politely but firmly "Hey guys, I need you to keep your hands off my stuff, okay? Thanks."

If they do it again, tell them something like "I'd really appreciate it if you could leave my things alone."

And if they do it again...well then they obviously aren't getting the message. Bring the issue to your teacher's attention, and let her know that you are genuinely bothered by what your classmates are doing. She should take care of it, if she knows something is really getting to you. If she doesn't do anything, tell your school counselor or advisor, as soon as possible. It seems like a trivial problem, but if you let it continue unabated, it'll grow into a Big Thing, (trust me, I've been there) and you don't want that.

Good luck!

That's hard. I sorta kinda have the same problem. But with doctor who. Everyone at my school is obsessed with it and that's all they ever want to talk about. People are so obsessed that I am at the point where I actually refuse to participate in their obsession and will not, under ANY circumstances, watch doctor who.

I too do not know what to do. I just ignore it most of the time. Thankfully I'm already pretty well known for being a HUGE introvert at school.

Oh. My! GOD!

I have THE SAME PROBLEMS TOO!

1.) Ebola. Everyone... and I mean EVERYONE jokes about it and thinks it's "soo funny". It's horrible! There is nothing funny about ebola and there is no reason to joke about it! Do they really not get it? I've called a few people out on it now because I'm just. so. sick. of. it!

2.) I can guarantee you that when my school isn't joking about ebola, they are (99%) of the time, talking about inappropriate things. Everything they say has some sort of meaning behind it. It's really gross. And I also have a harder time than them picking it up because you know what, I'm not like that. And then when I don't pick up on it they just laugh and make fun of me! (Can you tell I'm not a super popular person in my school? Have very minimal friends?)

3.) Same thing! Isn't it terrible! It's my personal property!

And the other thing. Do people from you school annoyingly repeat the same lines constantly? And act like they've never used their brains before their lives?

lol. Sorry. Went on a bit of rant. I just really don't like school.

I just can never connect with anyone there. It sucks. I've constantly asked my parents if I could be homeschooled, but they always say no. :(

Ya. In 4th grade and 5th grade, I had some friends, but I was very much ONLY their friends. So when they dropped me off the earth of the planet.. well, that sucked. Everyone else already had friends and weren't interested. Thankfully (or at least I thought) I had to go to a new school for high school because my town doesn't have one. But when I got there, I was the new student.. everyone else, same thing as middle school, had friends and weren't interested in being friends with the new girl who was very shy, read a lot, didn't play the same sports as they did, and didn't know anyone. It's just really stupid honestly. I mean, thankfully I do have friends, (my swim team) but I never get to see them. or at least not as much as I would like.

Melissa Ramirez (melissaramirez) | 51 comments Introverts are awesome - I'm a major introvert, also!
They just tend to keep their awesomeness in a nicely-wrapped and guarded box inside of them...and only let it out for very special people to see. :)

I forget who created that metaphor exactly, but I always thought it was a nice one.

I'm the same way; I have very few friends; and no one really understands why. I simply enjoy being on my own, or with a few people at a time. Period.
I'm not anti-social.
I'm not a freak.
I'm not trying to be "aloof".

I just don't find interest in hanging out with big groups of people all the time. When I reach "max capacity", that's it - I gotta go re-charge. :)

Do you guys ever feel like you just want to curl up in a ball away from all people and everything?

message 14: by Melissa (new)

Melissa Ramirez (melissaramirez) | 51 comments YES!!

Especially when I feel overwhelmed. Like at Thanksgiving, all my relatives were asking me about was what I plan on doing with my life, and where I'm transferring to college, and what do I want to do as a job???

And my answer was "Well, y'know...I'm an English major; and I'd really like to write when I'm older."

Relative: "Sure ok. Like what do you want to write? Books?"

Me: (nervous laughing): "Maybe. I don't really know yet. I'll graduate, and then figure it out. I'd actually like to write for a travel magazine, maybe?"

Relative: "Really? That's interesting. Why?"

Me: "Because...I really, really love to travel, and then maybe I'd actually get to go to different places and write about them."

Relative: "Honey, then you should just start a blog. You can't get paid to write about travel destinations..."

Me: "...Well, then maybe I'll work with animals."

Relative: "With an ENGLISH LITERATURE DEGREE??"

Me: (sheepishly): "Maybe."

*they walk away, exasperated and disapproving*

Me (to myself): "I'll just end up at Petco."

Seriously though, I think I'd like to work at Petco!!
My family wants me to work as Petco's CEO, or something (in their mind, a college degree should get you into high-level office positions like that - but both my parents went into business.) but I don't want an office job...
