Steph (angel4492) | 28164 comments Hiya, Team Caps! Thanks for volunteering to guide your team through a round of BookShelf Bingo!

Your job, should you choose to accept it, will require a few things:
1 ~ Be our go-to person should we have any questions about your team
2 ~ Organize your teammate's weekly reads for each shelf/category so that the BSB Ninjas can quickly and easily verify and approve your stamp request(s)
2a ~ Create a master list in a post (preferably on the first page of your team's thread) and update it weekly or as often as necessary
2b ~ Post your team's stats on the Captain's Log prior to requesting a stamp
3 ~ Encourage and motivate your team (you may also ask to borrow Judithe's whip whenever necessary)
4 ~ Post regularly to ensure your team is communicating and on track each week
4a ~ Send them a PM and friendly poke if they haven't posted at least once a week, noted their book choice, and/or appear to have dropped out of webspace
5 ~ Send us a PM (Steph, Sandra or Judithe) should you need us for any reason throughout the game

~Melissa~ | 1401 comments Hello fellow BINGOers!!! I'm looking forward to this round of Bingo. I'm pretty sure I've played with you both in the past :)

I'm not up to the task of Captaining. I've recently changed positions at work and don't have as much time to be online. I still find time to listen to audios and read though.

I'm a mom to two great kids. A son and daughter - I won the child Lotto with one of each. They are High School/College age and totally keep me on my toes. I work full time in the healthcare field. I rarely watch tv but we recently were introduced to Downton Abbey and have been binge watching. It's awesome!!

Skandia (sfgirl) | 678 comments Hi team!
Nice to meet you both!
Melissa, I think you are right. We probably have been in the same team before :)
I'm so excited to start another round! This is probably my 15th or 16th round playing and for sure it is my favorite GR challenge.

I'm not the best candidate for captain duties also. I know I have couple of business trips coming and as I am in Europe, shelf call will be in the middle of the night for me.

message 17: by Sandra, Kindle Operator Licence Required (new)

Sandra | 23482 comments From Wiki:

23 skidoo (sometimes 23 skiddoo) is an American slang phrase popularized during the early 20th century. It generally refers to leaving quickly, being forced to leave quickly by someone else, or taking advantage of a propitious opportunity to leave, that is, "getting [out] while the getting's good."

I'm old enough & we've always had US tv shows here, that I generally understood what it meant :D

...Thanks for the research, @Sandra...

I grew up in the late 40's-early 50's in Southern California, and so, never actually saw/read a formal definition of “23 Skidoo”. Like many other words and phrases, their meanings are absorbed organically from context during childhood. My extended family used it, as well as “Andale pronto”, “Skiddaddle” and “git oudah here” (please excuse phonetic spellings) when rapid crowd dispersal (mostly crowds of kids) was desired.

I've been playing -first-word-you-think-of? and when I saw "23", I thought "Skidoo"......

I'll go with whatever you Teammies want, but I still like Team 23 Skidoo, especially since 23 TEAMS THIS ROUND ... When'll there ever be the opportunity to use it again!!!!!!!!!!!!!

message 20: by Sandra, Kindle Operator Licence Required (new)

Sandra | 23482 comments Yep, I never had a formal meaning of it either till I looked it up yesterday. That's what I took it to mean as well, grew up in the 60's, we were always behind the US back then. LOL.

Review:
As usual for these authors, I felt compelled to finish in one sitting... And I read late into the night!

World building is organic, a parallel universe growing out of the story with no dumps, fits, or spurts, where magic works because someone discovered a 'serum' in the late 1800's, and the effects were heritable.

Even the weakest characters are well developed, and their relationships are what drive the exciting action story.

So of course, I'll be reading on...

Review: well I think this might be the fastest I've ever listened to an installment in this series. From start to finish it was under a day. I didn't want to stop listening to it. Noelle Bridges and John Masterson have been fabulous narrators for this series. Raven wants to be the first women police officer of the Northlands - where 'the womans' place is in the home being protected by her strong husband. Raven was in the first group of children at the integrated school. She came from the Motlands with her teacher Kya. Raven is strong, outspoken and funny. Leo is her boss and made to be her quasi protector who puts her in the basement of the police department sorting cold cases. Little does he know that Raven will stumble upon an old case that will rock their world. So fun and lots of history brought up that will impact the future. I thoroughly enjoyed this. Looking forward to book 10 and then the prequel book as well. I'll be sad when this series is done.

As this was the second book in series I could prepare myself and knew what was coming.
This time it was not that conflicting and horrid to read as first book. It still is a harsh, cruel and grim apocalypse story about four horsemen bringing misery and death to the world, but it actually sounds more horrible as the story itself is. I find it very fascinating how author has taken something so bloody and dark and turned it almost into a love story. Because it's not a love story for me. It's a story about humanity.

I really do like the world Laura Thalassa has created. Straightforward and very descriptive. It reads like watching a movie. Also the fact that her world is not overcrowded with all sorts of different paranormal creatures, is in it's simplicity a very welcomed change.

3.6*'s barely...
The story's O.K. with an interesting twist to the "magic" system. Character development is a little lite.

The thing that bugged me the most was the big reveal at the end which led to a tease for the next in series... then the promised story (IT HAD A TITLE AND EVERYTHING) can't be found anywhere.

very disappointing.

I'll be skipping the rest of these.

I often wait a couple days, to let a story 'settle' before reviewing...
Now I've gotten my Oasis all jumbled looking for that unfulfilled promise ... and can't find... 😡

still tentative about reading on ...

Review: new to me author that I really enjoyed. I will say I did notice some errors in wording etc as the book went on that took me out of the book a bit but overall I enjoyed it. Skandia - it was so hard for me to scroll right past your review of War as I was still reading book 1, lol and keep scrolling til I read War's book. Such an interesting story Ms Thalassa weaves. What happens when one of the four horseman take a prisoner and learn what a human is really like?? Sara Burns ends up Pestilence's prisoner after she shot him and then when she realizes her shot didn't kill him ....instead of shooting him again (maybe a head or chest shot at close range) ....no, she lights him on fire??!? Now as if her last name and what she did wasn't ironic enough......here is just a little bit more irony >> she's a fire fighter. I have to say at that point I was kind of horrified for Pestilence. I know, I know, bringer of Plague. I get it but, wow, to watch someone burn .......ummm yuck!I couldn't do it. Imagine her surprise when he captures her from her tent and makes her his prisoner .......all while his body is regenerating??!? Again, yuck! Needless to say, they don't much like each other from the get go, lol. As the story progresses though they each start to see and learn things about the other that makes them pause and think. I loved when they met Ruth and her husband. I loved Ms Thalassa's use of sarcasm. Made me smile. Looking at reviews for this book - people either love it or hate it. I'm glad I was in the loved it camp and I'm looking forward to War's book.

Skandia (sfgirl) | 678 comments I'm glad you liked it, Melissa. This is a polarizing concept but I like it this way. The rough and violent background allows the characters and their struggles really shine.

Btw, I usually avoid apocalypse stories. They are too dark and violent for me. I think it's Laura Thalassa's way to tell the story that captivated me this time.
War's book is as good. Maybe a little less impressive as you already know what is coming.

I do also love her "The Bargainer" series.
