The electric eel is actually three species with common ancestry. They are found in the Amazon River and their habitat is now threatened.

Robert Zwilling | 2001 comments There is a possibility that the Loch Ness monster is actually a very large eel, or eels if it covers enough time. Left alone and in a good habitat some eels can grow up to around 20 feet in length. Put two big fat eels swimming along on the surface and it could easily look like a sea monster.

Some of the other Scots lochs also have monster stories... I guess if you were out fishing in a small boat and hooked something 20ft long, you would be in big trouble.
