Synopsis:
Prentisstown isn't like other towns. Everyone can hear everyone else's thoughts in an overwhelming, never-ending stream of Noise. Just a month away from the birthday that will make him a man, Todd and his dog, Manchee -- whose thoughts Todd can hear too, whether he wants to or not -- stumble upon an area of complete silence. They find that in a town where privacy is impossible, something terrible has been hidden -- a secret so awful that Todd and Manchee must run for their lives.

I would like to suggest that people read this book and not listen to the audio version. I listened to the audio and the whining, yelling, and "noise" was very annoying. The narrator did a good job, but if you are narrating a screaming or whining kid, well...there isn't any way to make it sound nice. Generally speaking, the people I know that listened to the audio did not like it and rated the book low. Yet, I know many people that read the book and really enjoyed it.

This. Definitely this. I LOVED this book and I read the paper version. I started the second one on audio and had to put it down because all the extra 'noise' was really irritating.

It was really bad. I almost didn't make it through the first one. I wish I had just tried the paper version because I know so many people that really liked the book and I have no interest in reading any more of the series now. I swear it was almost traumatizing....I'm surprised I can listen to audios at all after that. ;)

Does it matter if you've already started reading this book? I find myself hating (view spoiler)[the poor spelling to start with but then discovered it is a critical part of what the author's trying to convey (hide spoiler)]. However, it seems to draw me in so much so that I find it difficult to not read it. The funny thing is that the thing I hate about this book is the thing that keeps my interest. It reminds me of The Memory Room.
