Jeremy Kennett | 10 comments Hi all,

I've been looking for betas for my own work and have had some initial success, so thought I would return the favour and offer my services as a beta reader. I mainly read sci-fi and fantasy, but have read plenty of YA, modern adult fiction and have written a thriller so can have a go at most genres.

I haven't done many beta reads of full novels before, but have done lots of workshopping of smaller sections.

I also have fifteen years experience in journalism, public relations and magazine editing, so am particularly good at helping people find the 'news angle' in their stories.

Post something about your work here and I'll PM you.

I'm looking for beta readers for my 61k YA-Scifi novel Black Heart : Arrival - the stunning sequel to my acclaimed novel, The Black Heart of the Station.

Sixty years have passed since the earth-shattering events of Book One, and the Station, a city buried deep beneath the surface of a frozen, lifeless earth, is only months away from completing its centuries-long mission.

Seventeen-year-old Trajectory Specialist Trainee Trudy Barnard is a brilliant student, but she’s haunted by her illustrious pedigree as the granddaughter of the great Matt Barnard, and the daughter of the Master Foreman of the Station.

Mytchel Chandler (authormytchelchandler) | 42 comments Hello! My name is Mytchel Chandler and I am seeking Beta readers for my 82K word, YA Fantasy novel, titled The Dark and Dangerous Days of Sin Shadow. I am looking for a comprehensive assessment focused on a generalized view of the story. I.e. Narrowing in on plot holes, character inconsistency, etc. Please review the synopsis below and see if it is something you’d be interested in. Looking forward to working with you!
Sin Shadow, a coming of age teen, has found his true calling in life, becoming a baker. But destiny has other plans as he discovers he has the ability to travel through shadows. When he asks his queen for capital in order to open up his bake shop, the Queen gives him an ultimatum; become the ambassador between the two sides of their world, The Land of the Light and the Land of the Dark, and stop the war from happening, or face the front lines.
He is sent to reconcile with King Nyx, the leader of The Land of the Dark, but struggles on his journey as he unearths the meaning behind his newfound abilities. Sin’s mission to harmonize the two lands turns into a desperate race against time when a foreign army from a land beyond the sea threatens to invade.
Not only must he stop the red army from conquering his homeland, garner the trust of two divided nations, parent his winged cat-son, Alonso, and wrestle with the knowledge that he may never own his own bakery, but Sin must find the answer to the question he’s been struggling with his whole life: Where does he belong?

Gerard O'Neill | 74 comments Hello Jeremy,

I have a 60K word science fiction book ready to read in a few days after final edits on the MS are done. This is book 2 in a series.

This is YA but the themes are solid and thought provoking. I look at my readers as being mature and having open inquiring minds. This book would not look out of place on the shelf with other SF and SFF.

I'm looking for sharp eyes on pacing, continuity, on character believability, world building, and story. All suggestions welcome, I have thick skin. I would like inline comments.

Thank you in advance

Tamara | 34 comments Hi Jeremy!

My book's genre is YA fantasy inspired by elements of the Arthurian legend.

Here is a brief synopsis:
"Donovan lives among the Nirvarians, the new race of a world recreated by the Mason and his Crafters. He spends his life serving his family until the call for war erupts
throughout the land and now he is forced to travel with his brother to fight against those who threaten their lives.
But as he arrives to Dayne, Nirvaria's headquarters for war, Donovan finds himself entrapped in another battle that he has to fight, one that makes him question who he really is, and if his duty truly lies beside the Nirvarians or somewhere else."

Christian Cura | 26 comments Hi Jeremy,

If you're still offering your beta reading services, I have a manuscript that may interest you. The word count is 57,000 and it is the second installment of a series.

Synopsis: Magical outlaws roam free on the West Coast. The Enforcers are stretched thin in their efforts to stem the tide of chaos. The Council Headquarters is on the brink of assault and the lives of the Council members hang in the balance. At the center of it all, is Saba Qureshi, a woman scorned by the draconian measures of the Council. They executed her grandfather and robbed her family of their status and fortune. Now Saba is coming for them and she’s not alone…

The title is Dreams of Thunder and I would greatly appreciate your honest feedback. As I said earlier, this is the second installment so if you want, I can give you a "spark notes" for the first novel so you kind of know what's going on in this one. (Or I can just give you the first novel.)

If you're interested, you can reach me at depanocura@gmail.com and please use the subject line "beta reader" so I can recognize it. Thank you and Happy Holidays!

Christian

Brian (coachacord) | 2 comments DreamCast is nearing final draft. It is currently 160,000 words (about 550 pages). I am trying to strengthen the spine of the main story, build up a few characters, and trim about 20% to shorten it. I’m trying to get it ready for a professional editor by the middle of 2020.

I’m looking for ten people who love to read, will give me their honest, thoughtful opinion about what they’ve read based on their unique perspective - often confirming, refuting, or adding to the voices in my head. A consistent reader should expect to give 1-2 hours a week to read and responses to specific questions about what they’ve read. I am not looking for editors, writers, or critiques.

DREAMCAST SYNOPSIS
Sixteen-year-old, Elijah Hoyt has a secret. One he even manages to keep from himself. As an impulsive tech prodigy He is juggling friends, school, and a key role with a Silicon Valley startup. As the company edges closer to a breakthrough in mind-control technology, he is banned from the technology he created.

Motivated by recurring dreams of his dead mother, his work takes a turn as he recruits his closest friends and discovers a breakthrough that allows the unlikely team to record and share one another’s dreams. The intense, high-def, experience of their “DreamCast” is so powerful that it could make the entire entertainment industry obsolete. But when an unknown enemy steals the technology and scatters the team he finds himself alone with nothing.

Having lost his technology and his friends, he must now go up against some of the most powerful forces on the planet. What other secrets does his technology unlock? How far will he go to prevent the weaponization of this powerful technology? And who can give him a ride?

Molly Stegall (mollystegall) | 168 comments Hello, I have recently finished my Fantasy book: Ashes of Revenge (107,410 words). I would describe this as a YA Fantasy book and would love to have a Beta Reader(s) read and review it! If you would only be willing/able to do a chapter or two that is fine as well!
Thank you!

In the land of Fantacia, there are five Kingdoms that rule over all, each having its own species: Farian, Monstro, Mundus, Shifter, and Telik. The Kingdom's are constantly at odds and have been on the brink of war for years.

Hoping to take advantage of the Kingdom's disheveled state is Raven, a Mundus that has three-fourths of her body burned. Richard, a Farian with wings as dark as the night and an unmatched skillset with a sword. Colt, a Shifter with two different colored eyes who escaped the Shifter Kingdom and has unmatched fighting skills.

The small group wishes nothing more than to take over the Kingdom's and claim the thrones for themselves. However, one day Raven runs into the entity of Death, and he forces them to derail their plan and follow his, unknown to Richard and Colt. Raven has to go to the Kingdom that she never wanted to see again, the Mundus Kingdom. There, the group's secrets and pasts begin to slowly rise to the surface, threatning their plans. Raven is forced to do as Death says, which begins to take a physical and mental toll on Raven. However, they still have one goal - revenge.

Please PM me :)

Jenelle Theis | 51 comments Hi, I have a completed YA Fantasy novel currently at 103,125 words. I prefer to send chunks through word docs. I am looking for a relatively quick turnaround as I am editing and changing all the time. Here is the blurb I have been working on:

Shayleen Cooper doesn't think she’s different or unique. Just another normal seventeen-year-old who doesn't fit in. Until the eerie night, she meets the monsters that show her just how different she really is.
She has no idea what is real anymore, including her own sanity. “Family history,” she’s sure the Docs will say, as they throw her in a padded room.
As she's launched deeper in this unknown world, Shay has no choice but to fight.
No big deal right? All that stands in her way is her imprisonment, hordes of beasts, shifters, and an unknown civilization living amongst them. All hell-bent on killing her.
She discovers her unconventional family along the way, and the boy she just can’t have. But don’t they know to stay away from her? Everyone she cares about ends up dead or forever altered…

*Gore, violence and some light profanity
If interested message me with email, thanks.

Are you still looking for beta reads?

I'm looking for people to review my work. It is technically non-fiction, but in some ways may as well be sci fi. Here's some intro blurb.

Let me know if you are interested in reviewing.

Kind regards

Jules

What if?

What if we were to turn everything upside down?

The science of physics that has developed over the last 200 years assumes that there are a variety of laws and forces of nature that influence the behaviour of matter. There is entropy, gravity, the weak and strong forces, electrical and magnetic fields and more.

But, what if it were the other way around? What if, instead, all these laws and forces of nature were themselves the consequence of the behaviour of matter?

That would be novel.

In the world of biology, the idea that it might be a force of nature that keeps a penguin pair cooperatively rearing a chick is laughable. In the world of sociology, the idea that it might be a force of nature that makes you turn up to work each day is ludicrous. Yet from an observer point of view, without any other explanation to hand, it might be quite reasonable to suggest in both or either cases that a force is involved, or that the individual agents are responding to some field.

So, let’s turn it all on its head.

Penguins are systems. Human beings are systems. Bacteria are systems. Atoms are systems. Nucleons are systems. Everywhere you look, there are systems in this big wide Universe. Stars are systems.

What if there were a common thread to explain the behaviour of all these different systems across the full range of spatial and temporal scales? Could that really be possible?

It is possible. But it will completely change your understanding of the Universe. Are you ready to take a leap?

William and the Kingdom of Emps is a 63k word existential sci-fi comedy about an artificial intelligence who destroys his world so he creates a simulation of the future to see how it would have turned out had he never existed.

Gray | 14 comments Hello! I am looking for beta readers for my novel, History Of The End (working title), a complete fantasy-adventure novel set in a world where witches and sorcerers are hunted by a bloodthirsty inquisition (sometimes for good reasons). It follows a group of people (from multiple POVs) who are brought together to face their past and achieve very different goals.

Blurb:
A soldier with a troubled past, a pair of mercenaries hunting a wanted criminal, a sailor who is far from home and a witch on an important mission are brought together by fate to stop a great evil.
None of them is too happy about it.

If you are interested, please contact me at: ragogray@gmail.com.
I will send you the first three chapter, and if you wish to keep reading let me know!

Please note: The novel is *not* YA. It contains strong language and some gory details.
