You probably know the story even if you haven't read it. I'd still definitely recommend reading it! It is a great story with everything a children's book needs: friends, stakes, and coming of age. (view spoiler)[Seeing Fern grow away from Wilbur was actually sad! I was surprised. (hide spoiler)]
As a kid's book, it's a fast read. It's a classic but the language isn't hard to understand at all. It well deserved its Newberry.
