Rusalka (rusalkii) | 16849 comments In celebration of the cacophony that has exploded in my neck of the woods with spring springing, and hopefully some new feathery housemates on the horizon this month, September's challenge will be avian in nature:

Read a book with a type of bird in the title.

Nice and simple this month. That's it.

Has to be in the title, not the subtitle. I will except plurals.

Yay!

General Rules:
1. The book may be in any format - paperback, ebook, audiobook.
2. The book may be in any genre.
3. The book may NOT be combined with the Year Long Challenge.
4. The book must be read between Sept 1 – Sept 31, 2019 (based on your local time zone).
5. The challenge is for one book. You may read more books if you chose.
6. The book must be 175 pages or more determined by the issue you read. If reading an audiobook or ebook, page numbers will be determined by the hardcover issue. If there is no hardcover, then paperback issue. Where there are more than one editions, the one with the highest number of ratings will be used.

Scoring:
How many pages? (following the rules above) :
5 pts – 501+
4 pts - 401-500
3 pts - 301-400
2 pts – 201-300
1 pt - 200 or less

Cover
5 pts – has a nest on it
4 pts – has an egg on it
3 pts – has a feather on it
2 pts – has a bird on it
1 pt – is 75% blue

Setting
5 pts – in space
4 pts – in the mountains
3 pts – in the woods/forest
2 pts – on the coast/beach
1 pt – in a city

Random Sept Points! - 2 pts each
• Someone in your book has dementia – Forget-me-nots are September's birth flower.
• The book is set in India – National Yoga Month
• Someone eats mushrooms - National Mushroom Month
• There are chickens (live ones) - National Chicken Month
• Your author is from New Zealand - Māori Language Week
• Someone in your book is a teacher - Teachers' Day (Singapore)
• There is a mythical creature in your book - Tolkien Week and Hobbit Day
• Your author is from Canada - Maple Leaf Day (Canada)
• Lexx's random criteria – someone gets poisoned or diseased

I finished A Pocketful of Crows A Pocketful of Crows by Joanne M. Harris yesterday.

Scoring:
2 pts for pages (236)
2 pts for bird on the cover
3 pts for woods/forest setting
2 pts for bonus - mythical creature

Total points = 9

I would like to claim two more points for chickens, but I doubt that this is enough: "I follow the trail of a speckled hen into the wooden henhouse, and there I am without mercy, leaving nothing but feathers."

The MC in the story is one of the traveling folk. "Tonight I am a vixen. I could have been an owl, or a hare, or a lark, or a wolf, or an otter. The traveling folk can take any disguise. But tonight - this special night, when wildfires burn and witches fly - tonight, I am a vixen." From the text, the traveling folk are Fairie or Faye - not real. They are not human, but have a human form and normally appear as gypsies - especially witches. Is this enough for the two points for mythical creature? or did you want something like a dragon, or a selkie or Big Foot? If not, I am okay with removing the two bonus points from the scoring.

Rusalka - with this new posting, I am going to negate the books in my message 6, but I did not want to remove the message, until you had a chance to catch up to what I am doing. I still have two other books waiting to be delivered from my library, that might have a better score, but until then, this will be my last posting for this challenge.

Thank you, Rusalka. I deleted my message 6. I will use the two books for my yearly challenge.

I am currently listening to The Trumpet of the Swan. Only 6 pts. (2 for 210 hardcover pages, 2 for bird on cover, and 2 for a teacher in the story). I doubt that The Sparrow is going to make it from my library in time to read it and see if it will have more points than what I already have posted for A Pocketful of Crows.
I have really enjoyed my "bird" books this month!

Cherie, I claimed 2 pts for diseased. The love interest died of some kind of disease. I didn't claim for eating mushrooms although I am almost sure there was a reference to our MC eating them :-/
