Note: I noticed in shelf view that the page count was "unknown" for this edition. However, in the edition detail page, I see "Listening Length: 7 hours and 48 minutes", which appears to be part of the edition field. Is this a new practice? It may be useful, but doesn't show up in the Page Count column in a shelf view.

That is not the policy, the policy is still hours rounded up. I reverted the changes which corrected the edition field and number of pages.
