Down Among the Sticks and Bones (Wayward Children, #2) by Seanan McGuire
Book: Down Among the Sticks and Bones by Seanan McGuire
Qualification: #2 in the Wayward Children Series
Finished: September 14, 2019
Rating: 4 stars

Review: The second book in the series focuses on the back story of the twin sisters, Jack and Jill. Growing up in a very strict home with parents more interested in appearances than children, they grew up unhappy and bitter leading them to the doorway to the moors. Again the sisters are forced to be one way or another and explain how they came to be at the school for wayward children. I preferred the deeper dive of just one story but it was helpful to have the earlier back ground from book 1. I'm curious as to where the next book will lead.

Reflections (Indexing, #2) by Seanan McGuire
Week #3
Spot: 22
Book: Reflections by Seanan McGuire
Qualification: 2nd in Indexing series
Finished: Sep 17
Rating: ★★★★

Review:
Indexing is the urban fantasy series by Seanan McGuire set in the world where fairy tales are real and are constantly manifesting and trying to bend reality to follow the narrative, consequences of which are almost always catastrophic. Books focus on the team of investigators led by main character Henrietta Marchen (Snow White) whose job is to investigate and cover up these manifestations and, if possible, prevent disasters from happening.

Reflections is the second book in this series and I actually enjoyed it slightly better than the first - it had all the components I liked in the first book, but the story was a lot more cohesive and the book overall seemed more polished to me. Sloane remains my favourite character, and I loved having her perspective for part of the book as well as learning how her story started. I feel like other characters were represented better in the 2nd book too, returning ones and a couple of newcomers. Overall, I think it's fun little series with a few dark moments and interesting ideas, and I hope McGuire will write at least one more :)

Lot's Return to Sodom (Liv Bergen Mystery #2) by Sandra Brannan Lot's Return to Sodom by Sandra Brannan
Qualification: 2nd in Liv Bergen series
Date Finished: September 18, 2019
Rating: ☆☆☆

Review: This story takes place in Sturgess, South Dakota. During tbe annual Sturgess Motorcycle Rally. Bikers come from all over the country for the rally, including the notorious Lucifer's Lot. Liv witnessses a possible murder. She also tries to solve a different murder her brother is implicated in. Enter Streeter Pierce, undercover FBI, when it appears the murder of the young woman and an older man are the work of a serial killer, The Crooked Man.

Story was okay, but for some reason I found it hard to lose myself in the story. This may have been because there were too many secondary characters. I found myself mixing the characters up and having to go back in the story to refresh my memory. You can read this one without having read the 1st in the series, but I think if I had known the backstory I would have found the story more enjoyable and been more interested in the characters.

Book: Giving In
Date Read: 19 September
Rating 4 stars
Qualification: 2nd book in series

I found this audio book on audible. Listened to the first book a few weeks ago, and thought I would continue the story.
Kylie and Jensen's story was delightful. Seeing Kylie grow from her early life experiences was endearing. I loved how she let the past go to be with Jensen.
I also liked the cameo appearances of Damon and Serena, from The Sweet Series.

Moving onto the 3rd book now for another challenge.

If you decide to use the free pass, you can't turn around and reclaim it later. So if you can finish your book before the deadline, I recommend you delete this roll, and roll after posting your completion post. It's up to you guys of course, but keep in mind that you can only get one free pass during the whole game, so you might want to keep it for later if it's not absolutely necessary to use it now.

Review ~ I reread this book and the first time I liked it okay. The second time I liked it even more. I didn't realize how I miss these quirky women. I still didn't like the hero very much this time. I really don't know how the hero should have handled the situation. But I still think she was unnecessarily hurt for his cowardice.

Review: The third book in the series and I didn't love it but it was fine. This book involved a quest to put back together a character from the first book. It was a chance to revisit and get an update on those characters from the first book. It also shared the world of "Confection" which was an odd but interesting world.

Week #4
Spot: 30
Book: The Night Masquerade by Nnedi Okorafor
Qualification: 3rd in Binti series
Finished: Sep 21
Rating: ★★★1/5

Review:
Binti is not so much a series of three connected books, but rather one book split into three parts and the third one - The Night Masquerade - picks up right where the second book ends. I liked the second one the best of the three, but all need to be read to get the full story.
I really liked the world Okorafor has created - futuristic yet rooted in tradition - and the messages of change and acceptance she expressed in this series. The books are not without flaws, including use of some clichéd tropes, odd resolutions and inconsistencies but they are so well written, original and very creative, and unlike anything I read before. I'm glad I read it and will definitely be looking into author's other works.

Review ~ WOW! So I read book #1 awhile back & was not impressed. In fact, I don't remember anything about it aside from the fact that it was Meh. This one, drew me in from the beginning. It was a lot darker than the first one and what Jacques went through I can't even imagine. And the fact that he went through it for seven years before he got help from Shea, mind blown. I love how even though she felt the bond between them, she struggled with it. I loved how he was so over-the-top for her. It was funny and places, it was tragic and places, it was suspenseful, it truly had it all for me. I only hope the rest of the series holds up under my new high expectations.

Review: Book three of the Trent and Reed centered series. This book has Trent going of and getting into danger rather than FBI agent Reed and so Reed has to rescue Trent. Trent own half an art gallery and goes on a trip to Japan to oversee the appraisal of two art collections and the possible shipping of them to the LA based gallery, if they decide to buy them. Complications arise when the first collector is killed and Trent is the one that Japanese officials are accusing as the murderer. a bunch of funny stuff happen like the evidence going missing, Trent being released without authority of the prosecuter, yakuza involvement, and Reed going undercover to solve the murder. Even though accused and trying to stay under the radar, Trent discovers some important information through research and remembering.

Review: Four teenagers play a prank that results in the death of a fifth. Twenty years to the day, the death of one of the survivors brings them back together. I would recommend this book, not because of the mystery, but because of the characters.

They are the usual group of teenagers - the self-centered beauty who leads, the spoiled rich kid who does whatever the beauty wants hoping that she'll love him the way he loves and adores her, the shy girl with self-esteem issues who just wants to be included, the young man who's the more mature one in the crowd who tries to be tbe voice of reason, and the new kid who is trying to adjust to a new life where he can hopefully escape the past.

Even though this is marketed as a murder mystery, it's really more about the problems the teenagers deal with within their family units. The first 2/3 of the story draws you in and makes you feel for the characters. Maybe because I worked with middle schoolers, I could see several of my students in the characters. The story did have one twist that I did not see coming. I give this book 👍.

I have really enjoyed this series so far.

Starla Night has really done a good job with building her undersea world and characters. This is the 4th book in the series and it did not disappoint. The story of how Elan and Zara find love again after been separated for a year is heartwarming. Loved the dynamics between Elan, Zara and Zain their son.
