Mary Hello All!
I'm Mary, from San Antonio, Texas. I've just been introduced to Good Reads by a co-worker. I have to admit, I think I'm addicted now. Just a little background, I've been a Teen Services Librarian for about 35 days. Yes, days. I'm counting everyone of them. I love working with teens, and reading YA novels. The YA programming at my library was in a sad state until I got here. But that is all about to change. We're having a revolution! I've got the kids interested in actually participating in events, and they say I'm "the cool" librarian. (OK so maybe its the cookies and popcorn I give them, but hey whatever works right?)
I've had some interesting jobs in my life, but none as intersting as being a librarian. I'm looking forward to some great book talk, and learning about all there is in YA literature.

Right now I'm reading Libba Bray's Sweet Far Thing. It's the best "cuddle up under the covers and get lost" book I've ever read. : )

Hi, I'm Meghan. I'm a junior in high school. Obviously I love reading. I found this group because I saw you were reading The Book Thief, which is probably my favorite book of all time. I can't describe the effect it has on me ever time I read it...
Some other favorite authors: Libba Bray, John Green, Maureen Johnson, Sarah Dessen, Deb Caletti...the list goes on and on.
Nothing else to say I guess...

MeghanZD | 1 comments Hi. I'm an eighth grade English teacher in New York. I try to keep up with what my students are choosing to read on their own. I just finished reading the Uglies/Pretties/Specials books by Scott Westerfeld.

I'm looking foward to sharing ideas with all of you.

message 54: by Megan (new)

Megan (meganmme) Hi Everyone,

I'm Megan (without the h :)) and I've been reading young adult fiction for a few years now. My graduate school years were tough academically so children's and young adult fiction where all I could handle above my schoolwork. That was a couple of years back and I've been reading the genre ever since.

I have one daughter but shes only now just two, so, though I read many books to her every day, she won't be ready for YA for a while.

Glad to join the group!

Morgan (mlhiggins84) Hey.
I'm Morgan. I'm 23 and I run the kids department(which includes teen) at my barnes and noble.I'm fairly new to goodreads and I was delighted to find this group. I'm always looking for new books to recommend and other people who love my childhood favorites as much as I do.
Happy Reading

message 56: by Meghann (new)

Meghann Hello! I'm Meghann. I just joined goodreads and this group. I love YA Lit. I am a teacher in Tucson, AZ, but this month my husband and I are moving back to Iowa. I love to read and I'm excited to get book suggestions from others and give suggestions.

message 57: by Celeste (new)

Celeste (celestelueck) | 5 comments Hi, my name is Celeste. I love to read. I read about all genre of fiction, but I have an awful lot of YA on my bookshelves.

I taught special education for 10 years. Was a part owner in a beading business for four years. Now I'm working in a bookstore part-time an really enjoying myself.

I read some YA stuff in college for Library Science class. Than as my children have grown( boy 18, girl 16) I have read what they were interested in so we could have something to talk about. Of course, Harry Potter, made this more than a read experience, it became an event. I haven't put down YA lit since.

I'm currently reading Joanne Harris YA book Runemarks. I'm really enjoying it.

message 58: by Gwen (new)

Gwen (socdownload) Hi! I am a high school Library Media Specialist. I just spent the last 5 years working with teenage boys in a correctional facility. This year I moved to a public high school. I love talking books with teens and finding books that they might enjoy reading. I love technology, but struggle with staying on top of blogging, listservs, etc. YA fiction is my fave. I am not a sci-fi/fantasy fan, but I have been branching out recently with books like City of Bones (loved it), Poison, Now You See It. I am currently working on the 2008 Teen Top Ten nomination list. There are several fantasy books on the list this year. If you're not familiar with Teen Top Ten, here is the website with info on the program and the list http://www.ala.org/ala/yalsa/teenread...

message 59: by [deleted user] (new)

Hi, I'm a YA author. I haven't read much YA both in my past and currently. So I'd like to meet some folks and/or peeps who write and read them.

Thanks, y'all!

Tom

message 60: by Sylvia (last edited May 10, 2008 04:24AM) (new)

Sylvia (sylnamira) Hai, i'm a librarian in a middle school. I love YA books, and recently I finished reading Midnighters by Scott westerfeld. I'm not a sci-fi fan also, but when I read scott westerfelds books, I fell in love with sci-fi. and can't wait to read more of them.
I love any genre in YA books, and hope could get some recommendations here :)

Katie Verhaeren | 12 comments Hello all. My name's Katy and I am a recent graduate of Michigan State University with an English degree and will begin student teaching in the fall. I'm really excited to see many other English teachers and so many writers as part of this club. I'm looking forward to getting a better idea of books my students will have read/been exposed to or that I can recommend to them.

Welcome everyone! Looks like the group is really growing!

message 63: by Ashley (new)

Ashley (readerandwriter) Katie, I agree with you about so many educators being in this group. It is great. This group is definitely a great source for teachers to get an idea of what todays teenagers are reading.

message 64: by Cam (new)

Cam (envyious) | 1 comments Why hullo thar everyone!

Ok, so I have much better grammar than that =P I'm Madison Camille, 20 year old college student (Business and Law) but I love literature, always have. I'm a voracious reader of many genres, YA being one of them. My favorite author of this particular genre has got to be L.J Smith, though more recently Stephenie Meyer. Hope to make some new friends =D

message 65: by Maggie (new)

Maggie Stiefvater (maggie_stiefvater) Hullo! I'm new to Goodreads and I'm still trying to figure out exactly how it works. I love reading and writing YA fiction (both of my under-contract novels are YA).

I just finished reading an ARC of Hunger Games, which was AMAZING, but I think my all time YA favorites are probably FEED and PEEPS. I swear I'm not a sci-fi only chick, though! Really, I prefer contemporary fantasy.

Anyway, I'm looking forward to talking YA with y'all!

Maggie

message 66: by Nikki (new)

Nikki (nikk329) | 32 comments Hi,my name is Nikki and I'm 27. I only recently got into YA. My first one being The Book Thief and I feel in love so ever since I've been a YA book loving fool!

message 67: by Claire (new)

Claire | 8 comments Hi all, this was my first time reading a monthly selection. I'm so glad to have found this great group!

I'm the author of a new guide for girls called YOU'RE AMAZING! A No-Pressure Guide to Being Your Best Self. It's based on a study that shows girls are feeling more pressure to be "perfect" and please everyone. I interviewed girls, older teens, and women role models for the book, and also included activities based on programs from Girls Inc.

I'm a big fan of YA and middle grade fiction. I'm excited to connect with other fans!

message 68: by Valerie (new)

Valerie | 16 comments Hi! I'm Val, and I too am glad I found this group. I am the mother of an almost 16 year old who also just joined this group. I love that we enjoy the same kind of books. She has inherited the reading bug! I myself have grown tired of the paranormal romance stuff for adults, and find that the YA books are more entertaining. Just finished Tithe and loved it!

message 70: by Ashley (new)

Ashley (bamabluestocking) | 1 comments Hi everyone,

I'm a very new director of a very small public library in rural Alabama. I think this is a wonderful group, and it's a great way for me to keep up with what teens are reading and what they REALLY think about various YA titles. I've read a few YA books, and I'm looking forward to reading more!

message 71: by [deleted user] (new)

Hello,
I'm a high school English teacher who loves mixing canon titles with contemporary Y.A. titles. My current bent seems to be graphic novels, and, in general, I'm trying to read more "male" books. I have small classes and boys almost always outnumber the girls, so I'm trying to beef up my knowledge there.
Most of my students could be classified as Reluctant Readers, so I keep that in mind as well when I select my books. It's important to me to stay abreast of literature and pop culture trends. It helps my teaching and makes me feel not so old.
A favorite book I recently read was DRIFT by Manuel Luis Martinez.

message 72: by Ermelinde (new)

Ermelinde | 2 comments Hey,

I'm Ermelinde and I prefer not to say my age (let's just say younger than 15) and I have recently started reading books from the young adult section of the library. I have an older sister who believes I don't read much, which is why I've joined this group.

message 74: by Patty (new)

Patty | 18 comments Hi, I'm Patty and I am a library media specialist in Virginia Beach, VA. I read a lot of YA literature in order to recommend books to students at my school. I must admit, I enjoy the books as much as they do.

I enjoy all genres, especially historical and realistic fiction. I am currently reading more graphic novels as students in my school seem to especially love reading them.

message 75: by Maggie (new)

Maggie Stiefvater (maggie_stiefvater) Welcome Patty!!

message 76: by Christine (new)

Christine Hart (christine_hart) Hello All,

I'm Christine, a reader, writer and YA author from Vancouver Island. I just published my first novel, Watching July, this past spring and I've been really enjoying the Goodreads community so far.

I stumbled across Goodreads in a web search and I've been pleasantly surprised to find such a vibrant online community.

Also enjoying the YA Book Club. I'm a huge fan of YA and speculative fiction, so reading Coraline and this fall, Stardust is a real treat.

Big thanks to the Goodreads staff for creating and maintaining a site like this!

message 77: by Mona (new)

Mona | 1 comments Hello Everyone-

I am new to the YA Book club. I am a elementary/middle school teacher. I have worked with 3-9th graders so I have read my share of young adult novels! They are great and I love teaching them in my literature/reading classes. I have yet to read some of the selections on your list so I am looking forward to that. Some books I have taught are Hatchet, Tuck Everlasting, Maniac Magee, The Outsiders, Number the Stars, Watsons Go To Birmingham 1963, The Lion, Witch and the Wardrobe(I love that whole series) A Wrinkle in Time, Bridge to Terabithia and many others. I look forward to chatting with everyone, getting ideas for new books and reading more YA adult books. Stardust is on my to-read list so I am psyched about that one!!!

message 78: by Cat (new)

Cat (beyondelsewhere) Hey there!
I'm a new addition to this group, as well. I'm currently a secretary to the Dean of a major University Music School in Canada, though my heart lies in the bookstore that I had to leave 7 years ago when paying rent became more important than working somewhere I loved. (Sadly, I was told I was too young at 24 to be promoted to store manager. Sigh.) I have been thinking of going back to the bookstore, though now it's a matter of paying a mortgage and the pay cut I would have to take would mean I can't pay it. Alas!
I am a huge YA fan (obviously, or I wouldn't have joined this group!) and a huge reader. (My record was 13 books in about a week and a half, just last month!)

I have a book review blog that I try to keep up-to-date and a personal blog that I just ramble on.

I think my fave YA series has to be LJ Smith's Secret Circle trilogy. I have the original books on my shelf and tend to re-read them at least once every two years or so.

So that's about it. Oh, I'm married (3 years now) and have two wonderful Finnish Lapphund dogs!

message 79: by Maggie (new)

Maggie Stiefvater (maggie_stiefvater) Hi Cat! What's your book review address?

I'D love to see pics of your Lapphunds -- we don't have many of them in the States.

And you can see photos of my dogs on my main blog www.beyondelsewhere.ca

I hope to join discussions! They look interesting. :)

message 82: by Maggie (new)

Maggie Stiefvater (maggie_stiefvater) Oh, I love their masks around their eyes! (just went and checked it out) -- and also that you're a fan of Urban Fantasy Land and Tez's blog. You should check out Fangs, Fur, and Fey (community.livejournal.com/fangs_fur_fey) -- they're a big urban fantasy community with over 50 published UF authors contributing)(Including Holly Black and Melissa Marr, who I notice are on your blog roll).

I'm reading your review site now -- your tastes are so similar to mine.

message 83: by Lisa (new)

Lisa | 7 comments Hi, all!

My name is Lisa and I am a Drama/English teacher and freelance actress and stage manager from NYC who is secretly lameting my missed calling as a young adult librarian because I absolutely am addicted to YA literature. Reading-wise, I also adore Oscar Wilde, Lewis Carroll, Shakespeare, Stephen King, anything associated with the Wizard of Oz, children's picture books, Lemony Snickett, and of course, all things related to theatre and drama. I'm always on the lookout for fiction (YA or otherwise) that has anything to do with theatre, so please drop me a line if you know of any titles!!

message 84: by HeyT (new)

HeyT Hi. I'm in my late twenties and I enjoy reading a variety of genres including YA. I do find that unlike a lot of voracious readers I loathe writing and try to get all of what I want to say out in as few sentences as possible. :)

message 85: by Anna (new)

Anna Hi I'm a mom that facilitates a Battle of the Books group for Middle Schoolers. I read fiction--Jodi Picoult, Nevada Barr, Young Adult, and nonfiction--Annie Lammott and Maya Angelou plus pretty much any book given to me! My daughter who is 11 reads primarily Young Adult so she and I read the same books. Recently she alternates serious books with graphic novels.

Hi all! My name is Chevy and I'm new to the group and goodreads. I read young adult books because they are enjoyable without a struggle. I download books onto my ipod using a website called libravox or manually by book on cd and I listen to them in the car a lot. I don't think I know what is even being played on the radio anymore. I look forward to suggestions but have to tell you that I don't really know what I'm getting into here. Is this kind of like a book club, I saw a suggested reading for this month so I am guessing. Happy reading!

Hey Chevy! This is a book club but also a group to just chat about what's on your mind (YA or other stuff). So feel free to start threads or join in the book club reads! Next month is Stardust!

message 90: by Kelly (new)

Kelly RAley (kraley) | 101 comments Nick, You and I share a birthday. Amazing, two Geminis who love to read! I am a middle school teacher. I have always loved YA lit and love having a great book to recommend to my students. I also really have grown to LOVE the characters and stories YA Fic has to offer. I find them much more engaging than adult literature or "novels" (Quotations required!) So glad to find this group. I also love that I have read about 75% of the books on this list, but that leaves me a tidy 25% to tackle. Thanks for a wonderful group.

message 91: by C. (new)

C. Purtill Hi there! I just discovered this great group and I'm happy to virtually meet all of you. :) I'm the author of 2 YA novels out now from Penguin/Razorbill -LOVE, MEG and ALL ABOUT VEE. I live in LA but I'm from the east coast so I still consider myself a New Yorker. This group sounds like it will be perfect to help me get through all of the wonderful YA lit out there (I love being able to call YA reading "research").

Cheers~

message 92: by [deleted user] (new)

Hi! Nice to meet you! I'm new too! This is my first month also and I'm waiting for September to start so we can read stardust and start discussing. I love young adult books and I feel like they aren’t written fast enough. Would you mind if we read and discussed your books. Would you partake in the discussions? I have no creative brain at all; I have a very logical brain. I love reading the books because things come as such a shock to me but my husband always knows what’s going to happen. BUT if something doesn’t make sense or there is a logical error or something could have been done better I pick up on it right away and I’ll point it out and he hates that, so we’re even. ANYWAY, welcome and thanks for being a writer!

message 93: by C. (new)

C. Purtill Hi Chevy - I hope I'm not being too presumptuous to think your comment is for me but if it is, I would be honored to have my books read and most definitely would participate in the discussions! Thank you for asking! I too love to read YA, just as I love writing it.

Cheers~

Welcome everyone!

message 95: by [deleted user] (new)

Hi C.Leigh, sorry that was meant for you. I am new to this group and by no means a leader so I don't know if we would be able to read your books but I wanted to ask because I am in another book club where we have the author of some books in our group and we've read her books and then all discuss together and she'll join in sometimes. This club has a suggested reading list so your books would probably have to go in it but I think it would be cool to discuss books with the author. You never know though, maybe the author doesn't want to hear the critics or on the flip side, maybe people don't want to discuss with the author; afraid to really say what they want to say. Oh well, it was just a thought on my part but like I said I'm not a leader. I'm glad you're here and writing more YA books though, keep up the good work!

An author can add their book to the Master Book list, then Nick uses a system that randomly picks books. Out of those books (I think 10 books) we vote as a group which one to read. You can learn more by looking under the Master Book thread!

There is also a topic for goodread authors. You can always go there and see what books are out there by authors on goodreads for YA books. Hope this helps. :)
