What do you think are the best ways to preserve your documents and photographs?

Air tight, water tight, fire proof safe with a constant temperature. ((I forgot the temperature.))

I am put to shame! Admittedly, we store our hoard of documents, pictures, notes, and antiquities in a plastic bin below my mother's bed.

What do you think is the best way to preserve the "essence" of your family members and forebears? (Who they were as people...) I was really struggling with this question ten years ago. I made a decision to write stories about my family. Here are my reflections after a decade of writing nonfiction and fiction.
