What do you think are the best ways to preserve your documents and photographs?

I am put to shame! Admittedly, we store our hoard of documents, pictures, notes, and antiquities in a plastic bin below my mother's bed.

I was really struggling with this question ten years ago. I made a decision to write stories about my family. Here are my reflections after a decade of writing nonfiction and fiction.
