Brian thank you for the suggestions. I was able to download Genital Grinder, City Infernal and Off Season all for free on bookzz.org Off Season sounds a little Children of the Corn to me but I'll give it a try. The other two I can't wait to crack. If only there were more hours in the day to read :)

Haunted, by Chuck Palahniuk. Don't ask me why it's called Haunted. It's not about a haunting at all, just sick and twisted weirdness.
Bob wrote: "This Book Is Full of Spiders by David Wong. It is more creepy than scary. Though it is disturbing and also quite humorous (in a good way) Highly recommended."I found both John Dies at the End and Spiders fascinating reads. I highly recommend both. Didn't find them particularly scary, or disturbing, just weird and crazy fun.
Last Days or the Ritual, both by Adam Nevill. I had to stop reading these before bed so I wouldn't wake up scared in the middle of the night! I've read a good amount of horror and these are real gems. The Ritual
Last Days
Tried Little and just gave up, couldn't understand how anyone got through his books. That's just me, glad he has given his fans good value. The first one I can come up with is a routine choice, but I really was bugged by HAUNTED by Chuck Palahniuck. You'll never go in the pool again...unless you do.
Boy, I really am tired, I charged onto this thread thinking "I can come up with a bunch." :(
Intensity by Koontz stuck with me for years. I actually took some time off of horror because of that one.
Disturbing....anything by Jack Ketchum especially Girl Next Door. Not so terrifying though...for that I would go with Clive Barker or Simon Clark
My Bones and My Flute by Edgar Mittelholzer caused me to keep looking over my shoulder when I was a teenager...
After thinking about it, I'd have to agree with Cyma (from a month ago) and go with Crash by J.G. Ballard. I must have read it nearly forty years ago now. It's depraved and very literary. And it hasn't dated that much, believe me. As for modern horror? Very little of it does it for me, I'm afraid. If I want to be grossed-out or disturbed, I'd read some of the non-fiction (war crimes, serial killers) that's out there.
Looks cheesy. For something to scare me (I think I'm too old to be grossed out now - but you never know...) it has to be well written; and I don't mean these pot-boilers and the hack and slash shit which is knocking around. The most recent book which set my pulse racing a little was The Passage by Justin Cronin. Beautifully written and the most original takes on the vampire myth I have ever read. Another recent read was a fairly long short story by Peter Straub. The Blue Rose. It had a slow build-up which made me wonder where it was going, but when the thing did happen, I was appalled. Indeed, the story left a nasty patina on my conscience for days later. But, like I said, for me, real scorers are few and far between.
by Jack Ketchum. It's based on a real event and there's a movie as well. Probably one of the most. Disturbing books I've ever read.
I know of the case, but I haven't read the non-fiction book. On the whole, the reviews are pretty bad, so I'll give it a miss. A good style has to carry this kind of thing and this book hasn't got it. The incident was absolutely mind-boggling in the extreme and the cruelty inflicted on this young girl warped. Of course, if there's material out there about this case which is well-written, then I'd give it a go. But until then...
I can highly recommend The Omitted Place
by Noelle Blanche; it is very dark and disturbing. It is incredibly well written and graphic; it paints a picture in your head like watching a movie. It made me feel like I was being watched, or something was going to put its limb on my shoulder. You can check out my review here https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...
Lockdown by Alexander Gordon Smith!!!! It is horrifyingly delicious! The descriptions are crazy good and makes me feel like i am right there with him. Read it, you won't regret. I was hooked from beginning to middle to end.
My Sweet Audrina by V.C. Andrews. Really, any of her older books. She died back in 1986, and while there are still books published under her name they are written by a ghost writer.
Penpal by Danthan Auerbach.
I am not finished with this yet, but it is a story about a man that recalls strange and tragic events from his childhood that leads him to remember a terrifying event from his childhood he has long forgot.

It isn't really horror but a book called the monk is quite weird. (I have forgotten the author's name) It is about a monk that is pious and holy to begin with but he is seduced by an evil woman and quickly falls into depravity he rapes women or a woman and he is evil and unforgiving.
I haven't read the book yet but it has been made into a film, which was quite good, the book sounds just as disturbing and weird.
Helter Skelter by Vincent Bugliosi. It's a nice fat read about the Manson killings. Brilliantly written and extremely disturbing.
This is going to sound self-serving and arrogant, but it's a chance I'm willing to take. The reason I'm willing to take this chance is because it's the same complaint I had about horror authors. I wanted to be terrified and disturbed by a book, truly terrified and disturbed. So, when I wrote my first book, that's what I set out to do. I wanted new-age disturbed and terrifying. That's what I wrote.
It's called "The Big Red Devil."
Psychological/Supernatural Horror
Erotic Horror
Dark/Paranormal Romance
It even has a co-female lead.
It's available on Amazon in paperback and Kindle, but I'm more than happy to provide free .PDFs of the paperback. Contact me at my facebook: www.facebook.com/johnhuberjh
Give me an email address and it's yours.
I'll take my lashings should this post fall flat, but I would love to hear anything and everything horror fans would have to say about it.
See you around the bend.
All the best,
John Huber
I think James Herbert "The fog" was one of the most scary it was the first horror book I picked up. some chilling scenes in that.
Haunted about the Smurl family's experiences. As a father of 3 kids under 10 it scared the s@@t out of me!!!
Homeplace by Beth Massie and Hell House by Richard Matheson both scared me. For disturbing, try Succulent Prey by Wrath James White.
The Roots of EvilIf you like horror, then you might like The Roots of Evil by David E. Gates.

Available exclusively at Amazon.

David, please familiarize yourself with HA's policies on self promotion. We don't want our book recommendation threads filled with authors promoting their own books. Let this serve as a warning. The next time your post will be deleted.
Heidi wrote: "The Croning by Laird Barron is one of my favorites -- horrible, horrible, wonderful,"Yes, especially the end!
One reviewer wrote,"Wow...I don't know what to say besides that. I feel like a disgusting pervert for even reading the 80 pages of this book that I did before I had to throw it down in disgust. I cannot understand how anyone can write this garbage, or what the publishers were thinking when they agreed to mass-produce this. I think this author should seriously see some kind of psychiatrist or something, he has some sick, sadistic thoughts in his head."
I had to buy it!

This sounds really disturbing and creepy, adding it to my list.
Just finished the Exorcism of Anneliese Michel. Disturbing, heart wrenching and truly scares the shit out of you bearing in mind it is regarding true life events

Ashley wrote: "hello guys does anyone know of any books similar to the movie the purge as i feel the premise is better than what the movie delivered i dont want anything political"
Somehow, this was the first book that came to my mind, albeit the similarities might be rather superficial.

Ashley wrote: "does anyone know any good coming of age horror books i read IT, The traveling vampire show, bays end and december park and have boys life and the bottoms and summer of night to read thanks a lot."Sounds to me like you already know a lot of good ones - you took all of my recommendations! :-) All of these are very good books, but Boy's Life is in a class by itself - one of the most amazing books I have ever read. December Park was excellent also. Actually, I will add Jeff Strand's "Dweller" now that I think about it. It spans a long time, but I still think it fits that category.

The Manhattan Hunt Club years ago, but that's one book that will always stay with me. ALOT like Purge!
I haven't seen it mentioned, it may have been and I have missed it. I don't know if this style of Novel is to your liking.
There is a series of Graphic Novels called
CROSSED- by Garth Ennis.
If it's Disturbing you want, I haven't read anything that comes close.
Didn't Finnish the series, couldn't get through a book.
