I'm new to this group and am not from South Africa and know of no South African writers and was wondering if you guys could tell me which author I have got to read if I want to get acquainted with South African literature.

I enjoyed Kringe in 'n bos by Dalene Matthee. There is a English version.

Authors i hear are very good:
Natasha Mostert
Herman Charles Bosman
Deon Meyer
John van de Ruit

Then New Authors
Sahara Berns - read and enjoyed
Maggie Fikkert - yet to read

I hope we get to discover even more with our monthly reads :)

Lauren Smith I haven't read many South African novels I'm sorry to say, but there are two I would highly recommend:
Moxyland by Lauren Beukes
Mother to Mother by Sindiwe Magona

Thanks for your responses. I wil certainly add these books to my to read list. Even if there isn't an english translation I don't think it will be to much trouble reading Afrikaans. I am a native Dutch speaker so since Afrikaans comes from Dutch and since I understand internetpages written in Afrikaans, I think the book sshouldn't be to much trouble. I will just order them online. Thanks again!

I have been meaning to get the books, but I never do.
Oh then also as a comment on Afrikaans authors, I dont like Afrikaans Novels much, but I love Afrikaans Poetry... Like Ingrid Jonker, Antjie Krog (she writes as well)
