Ann (annrumsey) | 17046 comments I had a good June. A few light cozy shorts, a few memoirs, a couple of group reads and some very good books that made me think and learn.

Very Good books: 5 stars
* Thomas, Angie On the Come Up a must read; So much is skillfully packed in this nerve-wracking, emotional and beautiful book.

* Weiss, Elaine F. The Woman's Hour: The Great Fight to Win the Vote coming up on the 100 year anniversary, I didn't expect this to be such a fascinating political thriller.

* Correa, Armando Lucas The Daughter's Tale heartbreaking. I could hardly put this book down. Such a painful time, the hardships and the losses were unimaginable, the story based on true events is very powerful

* McTiernan, Dervla The Ruin this is an atmospheric Irish police procedural full of tension and unease

* Carty-Williams, Candice Queenie Deeply moving, beautifully narrated and a voice important to hear, really listen to and hear. Friendship, family, relationships - the good and the bad and the raw. And as a caution, it is raw; but so real.

Good books: 4 stars
* McCall, Guadalupe Garcia Summer of the Mariposas thoughtful and emotional with a mystical element

* Reich, Christopher Crown Jewel Group read, a fast paced fast reading thriller

* Michaelides, Alex The Silent Patient Group read, a heralded book and a good discussion

* Eskens, Allen The Guise of Another Rounding up from 3.5 stars. Not terribly likable characters but has a good pace and thriller elements.

Memoir:
5 stars Forsthoefel, Andrew Walking to Listen: 4,000 Miles Across America, One Story at a Time A buddy read with DonnaJo - a New Jersey community big read (or something like that) I found it to be a thoughtful and interesting journey. It was great to discuss it with DJ

5 stars Ferguson, Craig Riding the Elephant: A Memoir of Altercations, Humiliations, Hallucinations, and Observations I love Craig Ferguson; a delightfully insightful memoir.

4 stars Horwitz, Tony Confederates in the Attic: Dispatches from the Unfinished Civil War The author recently passed away while on book tour for a follow-up book. I decided I needed to read this one first. His death is a loss.

Food:
* Meyer, Karman Eat to Sleep: What to Eat and When to Eat It for a Good Night's Sleep—Every Night

Cozy paranormal books 2-3 Kindle Unlimited (glad they are free, light fun)
* Lawley, Cate Star of the Party
* Lawley, Cate Tickle the Dragon's Tail

Ann (annrumsey) | 17046 comments Shomeret: It was different than anything else I read this month and for that I was grateful. :) And I thank you for the mention and review from your monthly lists.
And now that I said that it was different; in some ways it was just another viewpoint and situation that a young girl or girls find themselves in - whether it was Summer of the Mariposas or The Daughter's Tale or On the Come Up or Queenie. The mystical elements were different, the setting was different, the struggles, decisions, hard choices and heartbreak.... those themes I found important to read about in each of these books.

Ann, I love Craig Ferguson too and I didn’t know he had a new book out! I’ll bet you listened to this on Audible, didn’t you? It might be one I could manage to listen to and that way get the benefit of his delivery and accent.

Ann (annrumsey) | 17046 comments Jan O'Cat Yes, yes! As a Craig Ferguson fan you must listen to the audio which he narrates himself! It was great to hear Craig's voice again! I really miss him on late night tv.

Melodie (melodieco) | 3679 comments Great month! I have On the Come Up in The Pile and hope to get to it soon. I've put The Woman's Hour in my Amazon cart. Ed loves Craig Ferguson. Wonder if I could get him interested in this book? Probably not.

Ann (annrumsey) | 17046 comments Melodie: Re: The Woman's Hour: I grew up on the story of Tennessee being the final state that ratified the 19th amendment granting women the right to vote, and how a Mother's letter to her son turned the tide; but had no idea how much more there was to how it actually came about. Politics and the state legislature haven't changed much sadly.
Re: Craig Ferguson: If you could get Ed to listen to the audio, he might enjoy hearing it!
