In the Spring of 1889, an enormous amount of rain fell onto the small Pennsylvania Coal and Steel town of Johnstown and the surrounding area. The Southfork dam, located 14 miles upstream from the town, gave out. This is the story of that unthinkable disaster.

I love the writing of McCullough, he always digs a little deeper than your normal historian. He writes from the POV of the everyday man and with that special touch always seems to bring the subjects of his books to life for me.

I knew from High School History about the Flood. However, what wasn't in the history books was who owned the dam and the property adjacent to it. The story at this point takes a sociological turn, with the poor working families enduring the brunt of the suffering, and McCullough makes you feel for all of them.

I will continue to search out books from this author, he has become a favorite.
