Carol (carolfromnc) | 13232 comments Michelle and I plan to start reading and discussing K.J.A. Wishnia's Blood Lake starting Sunday, May 12th or so. Completists, note that this is the 5th novel in Wishnia's series featuring Filomena Buscarsela, an NYPD cop. Here's the blurb:

When Filomena Buscarsela takes her teen-aged daughter to see their extended family in Ecuador, it's more than a homecoming. Filomena hasn't been back in years, and the trip brings back memories of her previous life there as a revolutionary. Strangest of all, people keep asking her if her lover--who died in a hail of police gunfire in front of her very eyes--is alive.
And then a priest is murdered, a man who years ago saved her life and helped her escape to America. It's an election year, and the dirty hand of politics seems to be everywhere, perhaps even in this senseless death. Filomena's investigation promises to lead her back to the very people she escaped, all those years ago.

His debut novel, the first in the series, 23 Shades of Black, was short-listed for the Edgar and Anthony awards for best first novel in 1998.

Michelle | 38 comments Carol I've got my copy. Looking forward to getting into this book. Should we do a reading schedule?

Sounds good. I’ll look at my copy when I’m home later.

Carol (carolfromnc) | 13232 comments @Michelle, I'll be reading a hardcover edition, which is 272 pages. If we're both loving it, we'll probably read ahead of a schedule, but for a starting approach maybe:

May 26 (Sunday) -- 0 - 75
June 1 (Saturday) -- 76 - 175
June 8 (Saturday) -- 176 - end

Just putting something out there for you to respond to, but open to any and all adjustments. If you're reading an ebook, we can figure out the conversions to percentage-done pretty easily.

Carol (carolfromnc) | 13232 comments I started it last night. The first couple of chapters were confusing because our main character is using at least one alias, but I am loving the details about Ecuador, and especially the food mentions. On a serious note, this quote from page 6 resonated with me.

Going home to a poor country is like going back in time. A time when people still get yellow fever and typhoid and cholera, when one bad harvest means prices soar and two bad harvests means people die, and anyone who can steal something back from the government is a local hero.
