Linda C (libladynylindac) | 1053 comments Norman Lewis is a British Intelligence officer with the Allied Forces in Naples. After the Germans have been forced from Naples he is sent to provide service for the British troops. He does everything from vetting Italian girls who want to marry British soldiers to investigating any crime that might have an impact on the troops; medical, legal or criminal. His story of the year he spent there is told in diary form and is a collection of his contacts with the Italians. The area is in grave poverty and many of the stories depict what people will do to survive. Some are comic, some pathetic and many frustrating. An interesting and bleak look at the results of war. It was partially a black comedy similar to “Catch 22”. But it is appalling to read about what men are capable of in relation to civilians in a war torn country. Good read but eye-opening.
