Jannene | 2768 comments Hi all.

We have interest to finish this book now and then we can start the new series. I’m on vacation starting tomorrow, so you may not hear from me again until Tuesday.

Cherie (crobins0) | 19582 comments I started today.

It looks like Patrick is following some guy that is a real pillar of society - NOT.

Cherie (crobins0) | 19582 comments Ch 1-2 (view spoiler)

Tricia (triciareadsitall) | 814 comments I know, Cherie, I feel like the first couple of chapters are helping us play catch-up with all the years in between books 5 and 6. (view spoiler)

Tricia (triciareadsitall) | 814 comments I'm through chapter 6.

Everyone is getting older. (view spoiler)

The book start with a bang!

Cherie (crobins0) | 19582 comments I think I read up to chapter 8 while I was at the airport waiting for my grandson. I left my tablet at home when I stopped to get some clothes and my library book. I’m reading about dinosaurs today. I will run home at lunch time and get my tablet tomorrow.

Tricia (triciareadsitall) | 814 comments These books are not lending themselves well to discussion for me. I keep getting caught up in the story. I finished this one last night.

A few spoilers you can read at any point: (view spoiler)

Amanda, if you've met her in this book you can read this: (view spoiler)

Dominique | 1075 comments I haven't read this weekend. It was the first really beautiful weather we've had so went out. Will get back to it tonight.

Cherie (crobins0) | 19582 comments I looked up the publishing dates of the books in this series.
#1 = 1994
#2 = 1996
#3 = 1997
#4 = 1998
#5 = 1999
#6 = 2010, so yes, quite the gap between the last two, almost as much in this story.

Mystic River was published in 2001 and Shutter Island in 2003. Coughlin - two books published in 2008 and 2012 - so I think these were keeping him busy. I read the 2nd Coughlin book Live by Night - I loved it, but have not gone back to read #1 The Given Day yet.

I suspect reader pressure must have gotten him to put the last book out to wrap up the Patrick and Angela story.

Tricia (triciareadsitall) | 814 comments Ah, makes sense. Thanks for looking that up.

Cherie (crobins0) | 19582 comments Wow, this story is strange. I can't get used to it. I am currently in chapter 12.

Cherie (crobins0) | 19582 comments Chapter 13. The conversation with the DCF guy was interesting. (view spoiler)

Chapter 14 (view spoiler)

Chapter 15 (view spoiler) I left Patrick in the yellow Hummer...

Jannene | 2768 comments My plane was delayed 1 hour due to that our connecting flight left without us. We stayed in Minnesota last night. We just got home about 1 hour ago.

I didn’t do any reading except on the plane which was audiobooks.

Dominique | 1075 comments I finished the book

Jannene | 2768 comments Gosh I love Bubba. In Chapter 7 “And don’t give me this ‘He’s homeless’ shit.” He’s living in there ain’t he?”

“He’s squatting.”

“Still a home.” “Can’t call someone homeless if they have, ya know, a fucking home.”

On some purely Bubba level, he had me there.

I laughed out loud on that banter with Patrick.

Cherie (crobins0) | 19582 comments There is a lot of banter in this one, I’ve noticed. Between different people too.

Tricia, Did you feel bad for Patrick..."

BTW, besides the flight, how was Vegas?

Jannene | 2768 comments Vegas was fun. We walked 32,000 steps on Saturday! I got big blister on my big toes. Sunday we walked about 19,000 steps, Monday was 18,000 and Tuesday was 3,000.

Happy hour had a 2 for 1 drink deal. We ended up leaving with 7 drinks for the price of 1! We had a trainee who messed up and gave my husband a huge wine glass instead of the sniffer glass for stouts. The keg got emptied on mine 1/2 way through, then they refilled it with a new keg and tried it again with low carbonation. So, then they gave me another drink. Basically I got 2 full glasses of beer. Then the trainee practiced making drinks and gave us a ginger martini and a peach daiquiri. I didn’t want to leave that place. Luckily our hotel was just across the street so we walked. ;)

We saw the Hoover Dam, Penn and Teller and Mystere Cirque Solis. We lost $20 playing the penny slot. Yep, big spenders. We don’t gamble. Obviously lots of walking through all of the casinos.

Janice (jamasc) | 47179 comments Sounds like you had a good time Jannene.

Jannene | 2768 comments I did Janice.

I finished the book. I thought it was good (view spoiler)

Tricia (triciareadsitall) | 814 comments Glad you had fun, Jannene. Your comment about the penny slots made me laugh because that's me exactly. If I go to the casino, which is rare, that's what I play and I usually bet the least amount possible to still be eligible for the bonus rounds. I go in knowing I'm going to loose my 20 bucks, but intending to make it last as long as possible. It's the reason I can't go with my mother any more. She gets exasperated with me for not "betting enough to win." LOL

Re: your comments about the ending, (view spoiler)

Jannene | 2768 comments I’m sad that this series has ended. It was a pretty good one and yes, I believe Bubba needs his own series.

I have to admit that I’m glad that all of you want to read the Timothy Wilde series. I’d be sad to lose my group reads. :o)

Although Dom loves entertaining me with our reads...right? ;)

I hate gambling. Everyone at work was laughing when I said I lost $20 in the penny slots. It didn’t last nearly long enough. I kept wondering how many of those people actually had an addiction and was causing credit problems. I know, not my circus not my monkeys as an employee of mine says but it still depressed me to think about it.

Are we starting the series this month?

Cherie (crobins0) | 19582 comments Re penny slots - Jannene and Tricia - I am right there with you! I went to Puerto Rico in the early '90s and had never been to a casino. I played the penny slots (I think with $10.00) and a nickle slot with 5 or 6 nickles I had in my pocket. My sister and stopped at a casino for dinner one night (can't remember where), but it was the only place open. We each spent $20.00

Cherie (crobins0) | 19582 comments I was listening to an audiobook all day yesterday. I did not feel good and spent the day in bed or in my chair dozing.

I just finished Moonlight Mile. (view spoiler)

Thanks for the great buddy reads, Dom, Tricia, and Jannene. I enjoyed discussing the books with all of you.

Jannene | 2768 comments I agree, I think the author really didn’t want to write this last book. It almost seemed like a checkbox.

When did we all think that we wanted to start the Timothy Wilde series? I believe all of us planned on reading it and I did find spots for all of them as well on the challenge. ;)

Cherie (crobins0) | 19582 comments I am ready any time. I have only looked at the first title and it was on my yearly challenge already because I like another book by the same author and I had purchased it for "God" in the title or "fire" on the cover for another challenge and it got bumped of for both. I have it for the Book 27 task for Author (set between 1800 and 1900). I will have to look at the other titles and see if I have an open slot for them to fit.

Jannene | 2768 comments Book 5, task 4 I put The gods of Gotham
Book 14, task 5 I put Seven for a Secret
Book 25, task 4 I put The Fatal Flame

Cherie (crobins0) | 19582 comments I've already reported books for the first two tasks , but I may get two of them in. I can use the 2nd or 3rd for Book 25, task 4. It depends on if I throw over my other planned book.

So, should we start on May 1st?

Tricia (triciareadsitall) | 814 comments Yes, I agree about this book feeling a little different than the others and that the author was done with the series.

Looking forward to the next reads, and thanks for the challenge spots, Jannene and Cherie.

Dominique | 1075 comments L'm okay with May 1st

Jannene | 2768 comments May 1st works for me. I’ll start the thread now and have Janice put it on the buddy calendar.
