Yikes, that's what happens when you're doing galleys and preparing for a gala and not sleeping. Quote added in above!

Kimberly Thorpe | 200 comments I think the speaker is Lady Frances. I think she is talking about her many lovers and that what she wanted was an equal relationship which is what she has with Archie. I also think she may have had an equal relationship with Alistair because it was on and off over many years.

That's a good theory. I'm not going to say whether or not the speaker is Frances but actually the meaning of "equal" is compared to past loves of the man in question.
