Dirk Van | 2849 comments So the Rembrandt proved to be easy, let’s see how long it takes to guess this artist.
I think this may take a couple more hints… but then again, I know I must not underestimate this group!

message 3: by Dirk, Moderator (new)

Dirk Van | 2849 comments Good Guess, but Corot was half a century older!

Chris Gager (chrisinmaine) | 342 comments Poussin

message 5: by Dirk, Moderator (new)

Dirk Van | 2849 comments No. Poussin was even more than 300 years older!

Connie G (connie_g) | 368 comments Courbet?

message 7: by Dirk, Moderator (new)

Dirk Van | 2849 comments That's a pretty good guess Connie, but Courbet was also older, almost 40 years.

Heather | 8396 comments Degas?

message 9: by Dirk, Moderator (new)

Dirk Van | 2849 comments Also a good guess Heather! But Degas was 24 years older ;-)
If I find a couple of minutes I'll post the next hint.

Heather | 8396 comments Well I’m getting closer to the age!

Geoffrey Aronson (geaaronson) | 930 comments Renoir

message 13: by Dirk, Moderator (new)

Dirk Van | 2849 comments Alas not Renoir. But getting really close with the age!
Renoir was only 17 years older!

Maybe some extra info.
The artist is (I almost say obviously) male.
The second painting is a portrait of his wife, she was twenty years younger and his muse.

Ruth | 1907 comments The brushwork in that second one looks like John Singer Sargent.

message 16: by Dirk, Moderator (new)

Dirk Van | 2849 comments Indeed I can see the likeness, but it isn't Singer Sargent, Ruth.
Concerning the age: it's almost right on target: Singer Sargent was only 2 years older, and what's more he died in the same year!

Pissarro was almost 30 years older, Geoffrey!

I'm thinking about posting a self portrait tomorrow, maybe that will make it easy for someone...

Heather | 8396 comments I cheated and I honestly have never heard of him. Sorry, Dirk if that was a hint 🤔?

Dirk Van | 2849 comments You've got it Connie!
Did you know him?

Dirk Van | 2849 comments Here are a couple of self-portraits, one with his young wife Charlotte Berend:

Dirk Van | 2849 comments Lovis Corinth died in 1925, Charlotte was then 45, some years later she moved to the states and lived in Santa Barbara, California. She died years later in New York, aged 87.

message 22: by Ruth (new)

Ruth | 1907 comments Didn’t he have a stroke or something like that in mid career, that affected his work?

message 23: by Dirk, Moderator (new)

Dirk Van | 2849 comments Yes at age 54, and it was Charlotte who was once his student, who taught him to paint again. After his stroke his style was more colourful and impressionistic.

message 24: by Dirk, Moderator (new)

Dirk Van | 2849 comments One more Corinth self-portrait with his family.

Geoffrey Aronson (geaaronson) | 930 comments Never heard of him.

message 26: by Kristine (new)

Kristine Henshaw (kristilou) Even between the first two paintings there is a huge variety of styles here. They hardly look like they were painted by the same artist.

message 27: by Dirk, Moderator (new)

Dirk Van | 2849 comments Probably world famous in Germany, where he appeared a few times on postage stamps:

I was not familiar with Corinth. It was funny how I stumbled on one of his paintings. I was looking at Willard Melfcalf that I was considering, but I always thought of as a landscape painter, to see if he also painted portraits. Google took me to a site that had several artists and there was Corinth's painting! So it was totally luck.
