Susie | 4488 comments Another novella from the Women's Prize longlist that comprises a series of vignettes tracing the experiences of Alina, a woman living in 1970's communist Romania. Alina's brother-in-law defects, which shines a spotlight on the family and leads to their family's upheaval. MAGICAL REALISM ALERT!! For this one I really think that if Magical realism isn't your bag that this book will not be for you! There are tiny shrunken people. I thought they were novel and gorgeous, but I can see that they won't be for everyone. I felt as thought a lot of emotion was conveyed in a short period of time, and I was able to connect with the experiences of people living in this time and place. I don't think it will take out the prize, but it was worth reading for me.
