Esther Rabbit | 16 comments Hi guys, my name is Esther and I am a content creator for writers and a Paranormal Romance author myself. The reason why I'm here today is to ask you, readers and writers alike about your reading preferences involving:

- romantic scenes
- steamy scenes
- erotic scenes

... in the novels of your choice. I just wrote an article on the matter: https://estherrabbit.com/romantic-ste... with examples of each (be warned, explicit content).

But I'd like to take it a step further and write another article involving the ones who would like to take part in this little survey. I'd like to know where you draw the line between steamy and erotic and if reading such scenes provides an enjoyable reading experience for you.

Naturally, do let me know if I have your permission to quote you in my upcoming article with your Goodreads name or if you wish to remain anonymous. Happy Monday everyone!

Cozen | 482 comments Romantic scenes - To me means a moment or an instant where romantic intensions are made known to the characters and thus the reader. No sex is involved but the emotional side is evident through actions like a movement of hand, the closeness of bodies, or spoken words of interest. Maybe even a stolen kiss.

Steamy scene: are the scenes of heighten awareness. More intimate touching. Bodies gyrating. However, a lot of these scenes seem more like *cough* cock teasers *cough* because they usually don’t come to a satifing conclusion. Except for the occasional dry humping. But other than that, too many of these scene and by the end of the book there isn’t a payout... infurates me personally. Or when they go through all those countless scenes and when they finally do reach that point, it’s a side note like they wake up the next morning. That also annoys me.

Erotic scenes: Includes discriptive imagery, higher emotions, loss of control, and wiggling body parts. What I didn’t agree with you’re article was this:

As you know, sex is optional in any kind of Romance novel, but it is a must in Erotica. Take out the sex, and the Romance novel survives and strives. If you take out the sex scenes from Erotica, the story is bound for imminent collapse, due to the numerous sex scenes that sustain it.

While I somewhat agree, the issue is with the quantity aspect. A good erotic novel (not including those short stories like Daddy’s Pet or ones with less than 100 pages) balances the scenes so that they still move the story forward. If you take those few scenes out, you’d still have a solid story. I’ve actually come across 450+ page story that was littered with scene after scene of sex. When one took out those scenes, there was nothing left (maybe a total of 50pgs) of a story. There wasn’t really a plot. Most readers call that just simply porn. There is such a thing is having too much sex in a book. I don’t recognize them as Erotic because of the thinly veiled plot.

I don’t know if I helped.

This is immensely useful, thank you. Do I have your permission to quote you in the following article?
