Peggy (pebbles84) | 15083 comments ***We have added some extra information about book discussions to this post (see 'a note on discussion' below). Please read it carefully. Thanks!***

One of the group reads for April is Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? by Philip K. Dick

Please discuss the book in this thread.

Renee will be leading the discussion.

In order to receive a badge you must:
1. have read the book before or during April 2019.
2. discussed it in this thread. Discussion must be more than "I read the book and I liked it". Discussion requires something more substantial and analytical of what you read, for example, thoughts, opinions, impact it had on you, what was your favourite part, was it what you expected it to be like etc. You may also like to review the book and post a link to the review in this thread. Please refer to our group spoiler policy for further information.
3. Report that you have read AND discussed the book in the reporting thread (include a brief summary of what you thought of the book).

A note on discussion: Discussion must be more than "I read the book and I liked it". Discussion requires something more substantial and analytical of what you read, for example, thoughts, opinions, impact it had on you, what was your favourite part, was it what you expected it to be like etc.

In addition to this, the group reads are meant to be a "read along" so it is preferable that you discuss the book as you read rather than wait until you've finished the book.

And finally, discussion is not about just listing your thoughts. Please interact with the other group members, comment on their thoughts, and if they comment on yours, repond to them. This is what makes a good book discussion!

You may also like to review the book and post a link to the review in this thread.

Please refer to our group spoiler policy for further information.

General Rules:
1. Please mark your spoilers with the spoiler tags along with mentioning what stage of the book you are at so other's don't get a nasty shock. Chapter numbers/titles are generally best as they are the same across all formats and editions. See our spoiler policy
2. The book may be combined with the Year Long Challenge, Topplers, and Monthly Challenges.

Happy reading!

Sarah | 18188 comments I read this book a few years back. I will follow the discussion.

Kristie | 13585 comments I'm so glad this thread is here. I started the book a couple of days ago and ended up putting it aside until I could discuss it. It started out so weird! I don't read a ton of sci-fi / fantasy, so it's probably stranger to me than to someone who reads the genre often.

I'm trying to figure out a good way to state where I am in the book. I have the audio from overdrive at the library and there is no percentages or chapters listed. I'll have to listen to a bit more and hope the narrator states chapters at some point so I can discuss with labeled spoilers.

If you've started the book, this shouldn't be a spoiler. I recall it being the first scenes. (view spoiler)

I have other thoughts and questions too, but I need to figure out where I am first so I don't post a spoiler.

Renee (elenarenee) | 1630 comments I apologize. I was ill and don't have the book yet. It is in at the library. I hope to have it by the end of the day. I have read the book before. It is an odd but very thought provoking book.

I think I am going to have fun comparing the two books. I also loved the movie with Harrison Ford ,Sean White and Daryll Hannah. It is very different from the book. I am hoping others have seen the movie. I would love to compare it with the book.

Kristie | 13585 comments Janice re your ch 1 spoiler (view spoiler)

I think my questions are about chapter two. I didn't get to listen to any of this yesterday. I'll listen for chapters today or just wait until someone else mentions it in a spoiler.

message 7: by Sarah, Moderator (new) - rated it 4 stars

Sarah | 18188 comments I watched the movie a long time ago but can't remember much about it now. I have the latest version of the film - not sure if it follows the same story or whether it's different. I haven't watched it yet.

Renee (elenarenee) | 1630 comments I finally have a copy of the book. I had requested a paper copy. My library is being renovated. I got my copy from the hold shelf. As I went to check it out the fire alarm went off. They made us evacuate. I left the book on the desk. It was a beautiful day. I wandered around the park the library is in.

When I came back the book had vanished. The librarian thinks it may have been picked up and returned to the library it came from

I now am using an audio book. I will try and keep track of where I am at. Its just so much easier with a paper book.

Sarah, the new movie take place years after the first movie ends. It features some of the same chars. It is an ok story but the first will always be my favorite.

I don't think this is a spoiler since it doesn't have anything to do with the story. I remember seeing that movie with Michael Douglas and my ex and I wanted to go to Chicago to see the lions. I grew up with taxidermies, so I don't find them horrifying.

message 11: by Janice, Moderator (new) - rated it 3 stars

Janice (jamasc) | 48723 comments Sarah, I have heard that the book and first movie are quite different. The newest movie, as Renee mentioned, is a sequel.

message 12: by Sarah, Moderator (new) - rated it 4 stars

Sarah | 18188 comments I agree Janice, from what i recall, book and first movie are pretty different.

message 13: by Kristie, Moderator (new) - rated it 3 stars

Kristie | 13585 comments So, I was able to answer my question, but I don't think my audio has chapters noted. I'm not using Audible which makes it difficult to figure out where I am to comment. I'll probably just have to respond to other's comments assuming I can be sure that I can do it without spoilers.

Renee (elenarenee) | 1630 comments Krisite I think you and I are in the same boat. I am doing this on audio book. My library still cannot figure out what happened to the paper copy.

Kristie | 13585 comments It's quite frustrating, Renee. I think this would be a good book to discuss and I'm at a part where I'm wondering what's going on, but I can't comment until someone else does because I don't know where I am. I think I'm coming up on around halfway because I'm almost finished part 4 out of 8, but the parts aren't all the same length either.

message 19: by Janice, Moderator (new) - rated it 3 stars

Janice (jamasc) | 48723 comments I finished Chapter 3 & 4 last night. I hope the weirdness of the first two chapters is done with. These two chapters were more palatable.

message 21: by Kristie, Moderator (new) - rated it 3 stars

Kristie | 13585 comments So, I just switched "parts" on the audio and it popped up chapter 12. I decided to see what I can figure out using the "look inside" feature on Amazon. According to their copy I just finished page 125 and am somewhere in the middle of chapter 12. I will try to keep checking that way moving forward.

So, somewhere in chapter 12 (view spoiler)

Saar The Book owl | 1771 comments I've started today, but still not sure what I'm still on chapter one. I read a lot of fantasy, but rarely SCIFI, so for me that's new.
What I find of it for now:

I hope it will make sense after a couple of chapters.

Saar The Book owl | 1771 comments And I keep on thinking about the movie 'Blade' but it's 'Blade Runner'. A bit confusing.

That's a shame Saar. What was it that was causing you problems?

Saar The Book owl | 1771 comments I don't know really. All that talk about androids and mechanical animals....It's not a book for me.

message 43: by Kristie, Moderator (last edited Apr 24, 2019 06:02AM) (new) - rated it 3 stars

Kristie | 13585 comments I didn't love it either Saar. I thought it wouldn't be for me in the beginning, then got interested in the middle, then was unhappy with the ending. I could have lived without this one, but I'm glad that I can say I read it. It ended up being a just ok read for me overall.

End spoilers: (view spoiler)

I had some other thoughts as I was reading too, but I forget now. I didn't come back right away because I wasn't happy with the ending and didn't have any interest in discussing it right away. I found it to be a strange book and somewhat disappointing. It does give you some things to think about, but I don't think I'll remember much of it in years to come.

message 44: by Janice, Moderator (new) - rated it 3 stars

Janice (jamasc) | 48723 comments The movie was definitely better than book. Kristie, I also thought there were some questionable things in the book.

message 45: by Kristie, Moderator (new) - rated it 3 stars

Kristie | 13585 comments I'll have to check out the movie. I've never seen it. For some reason I had Blade Runner mixed up with another movie. I think it was Mad Max.

Saar The Book owl | 1771 comments I have Blade Runner on Netflix. Maybe I'll watch it.

message 47: by Jenn (new) - rated it 3 stars

Jenn | 2184 comments I finished it a couple of days ago. I haven't been able to keep up with the discussion, and had difficulty fighting for computer time to catch up now as Sean is no longer in camp :(
So many thoughts, (view spoiler)

All in all, it was interesting, left some serious loose threads for me. But, at the same time it did answer some of my questions from the movie. It has been a long time since I last saw the movie, but in my opinion it was far better. I am also glad that I have read this, but glad to be moving on.
