National (US) Library Week Photo Challenge
April 7-13, 2019

Who doesn't love libraries?

Free books, free access to databases, free dvds, free music, and in some areas free crafting classes, job/resume crafting workshops, free baking pans, free storytimes and much more!

To celebrate libraries and also get us connected in bookstagram (if we're not already), I'm hosting a week long photo challenge. Tag your photos #procrastinatorslibraryweek so we can all share

If you don't want to post on Instagram but still want to participate that's okay! Post your photos here (or post doubly here and on Insta) and we'll all admire your creativity and love of libraries and books <3

Here're the prompts:

description

The day before I will post more information on the prompts here and on Instagram (@laurelsuspectedbibliophile), but these prompts should help get you started with your photos

Rules:
1. Reading the book is not necessary
2. Fantastic camera skills are not necessary
3. Posting only library books/materials is a bonus but not required (also—if you only read audiobooks or ebooks, post pictures of those!)
4. Taking pictures from within a library is a bonus, but please be considerate of library rules and library staff
5. Being in the US is not a requirement—join in and celebrate books and reading!
6. Have fun and don't stress out! (view spoiler)

Day 1 (April 7): #Libraryhaul

Show off your #libraryhaul

Or #tbr or your latest #bookhaul or just a stack of books

I’ve probably got a solid half of the library checked out right now, which by now is par for the course for me and my book borrowing habits.

Not pictured are the audiobooks sitting in my OverDrive and RBDigital accounts, and the graphic novels and comics I have waiting on my coffee table.

I’m ever grateful to libraries for offering reading materials for free, along with all of their other resources (also for free or at low, low cost).

QOTD: What do you use your library for? Do you use it? Why or why not?

I’m looking forward to seeing your posts for tomorrow!

Remember: you can post your photos here to this thread or on Instagram (with the tag #procrastinatorslibraryweek)—and your photo doesn't have to be ~Insta Perfect~ just look at mine!

Day 2 (April 8): #CurrentlyReading

Library books, audiobooks, ebooks, graphic novels, comics—it's all reading!

I'm currently reading Descendant of the Crane and Monsoon: The Indian Ocean and the Future of American Power

What are you all reading?

Day 3 (April 9): Books & Flowers

It’s almost spring and here on the east coast it’s pollen season. Everything has turned a lovely snot-green and I can’t wait for the flowers to come out and be pretty.

#DearFahrenheit451 is a series of love and break-up letters a librarian wrote to various books that have entered her life. I’m intrigued by this one…mostly to see what she says about the ore ~controversial~ popular novels.

Do you ever stop reading a book you don’t like, or do you have to finish it once you start reading?

Day 4 (April 10): Digital Love

No, this isn’t some crazy showcase your porn offer—it’s to highlight all of the cool electronic resources your library has!

From free access to scholarly databases to genealogy research (Ancestry.com + occasional librarians who specialize in genealogy) to Ask A Librarian to vehicle maintenance databases to language learning applications to retirement and financial assistance to…well, the ecollection, libraries generally tend to have a lot to offer their patrons.

Usually when I see patrons coming over with a stack of audiobooks, I can convince them to sign up for Overdrive or RBDigital, which offer eaudiobooks…because juggling CDs is so 2002 and there’s an app for everything. Although I did include a picture of a Playaway because they’re hilarious and easy to use.

Libraries: more than just books.

Day 5 (April 11): Library + Book

TWO DAYS LEFT OF THIS CHALLENGE!

Thank you so much for participating <3

Today’s challenge is to take a picture of a book in a library…which I clearly haven’t done since I took this on my day off and wasn’t feeling particularly motivated to go into work.

If you’re not feeling like going into a library to take a picture, then maybe celebrate Library Advocacy Day by calling, emailing or tweeting your senator (if you are in the US) and asking them to #FundLibraries.

Many public, academic, school and special libraries rely on federal funding for collection development, programming, renovation and special projects, and that funding has been eliminated from the president’s proposed FY20 budget.

You can help ensure that your libraries continue to receive federal funding by contacting your congressional representatives and advocating for libraries (and museums) and specifically asking them to sign the FY20 LSTA and IAL Dear Appropriator letters, and ask them to vote yes on fully funding the Institute of Museum and Library Services.

The American Library Association has resources available on their advocacy webpage if you are unsure what to say or how to contact your representatives.

Day 6 (April 12): Marginalized Voices

ONE MORE DAY!

Last year I realized how many books I was reading by white people, so last year and this year I started to track the books I’ve read written and about marginalized peoples.

This year I set two goals: read at least 60 books with a person of color main character, and read at least 40 books with an LGBTQIA+ main character. Right now I’m at 25 and 15, respectively.

What are your reading goals for the year?

Day 1's prompt is up both on Instagram and this thread. Check it out and think about participating...you definitely don't have to be a master photographer (I'm certainly not), just a lover of books who has a camera and internet connection.

Okay, this looks like fun since I am always at the library.
My Instagram is @luna.dreams.
Also, how do you insert pictures into GoodReads?

I use the library to read all of the books since I cannot buy books all the time.

Yay! There's still time to join :)

This is the code to insert pictures. You just copy and paste the image address into the quotation marks (covering up the Goodreads url)

img src="https://www.goodreads.com/image..." width="40" height="100" alt="description"/>

(to get this code to not generate into something wonky, I had to remove the < at the beginning)

To get the image address (it's like its own url), you would right click on the image (PC) and select "copy image address" or "copy image url," then paste it into the quotation marks in the code above (and select what width and height it is). For a Mac, you'd Control + Click to get that drop down menu and then follow the same steps.

Hope that helps—if not, just posting in Instagram is fine too!

I'm about halfway through and still hoping to get hooked. Right now it's sitting at three stars for me, but lots of other people have loved it so I think it's just a me issue. Fingers crossed you love it when you get to read it :)

That is understandable, not every book can be a perfect 5 for everyone.

I have learned to enjoy using DNF because it allows me to take a break and I can either come back to it later or never touch it again.

Learning to put a book down without finishing is so hard because we're taught to never quit, but life is too short to read bad books. DNFing is so freeing!

Thank you to everyone who participated in this challenge!

It was so much fun seeing what everyone was reading and what their libraries looked like (if you posted pics a library...which I failed to do lol)

If you'd like me to host more Instagram/Goodreads photo challenges, please let me know :)
