I'd have to say one of my worst habits is buying crime and horror books in a series that are out of sequence. Depending on the flavour of the day, I've been known to stumble across and buy Book #4 of a series, for example, without ever having read 1, 2 or 3!
Luckily, twice a year the Lifeline Charity Bookfest comes to Brisbane and I'm able to fill the gaps pretty cheaply when a series really piques my interest. But it really is a terrible habit that I really need to get under control >.>

Which series have you been known to do this with?
I've recently had to start filling in the gaps for;
*Ian Rankin's Inspector Rebus series
*Patricia Cornwell's Scarpetta series
*John Sandford's Lucas Davenport series
*Tess Gerritsen's Rizzoli & Isles series, and;
*Matthew Reilly's Scarecrow series.
