joy *the clean-reader extraordinaire* (joytotheworld) | 98 comments hello again, ladies...
i'm trying to decide on a rating system for my goodreads shelves, and i really need something more specific than the G, PG, PG13, R movie system. it seems to me that there should be more specification, especially between PG and R. any suggestions? i'm thinking like PG11 PG14 PG17, but that could go on forever. maybe like the terrorist warning colors? ;) actually, that's not a bad idea...

Tracy | 75 comments That's a great idea. We could adopt something like that here on the group as well. My initial response is to have it be the same as the movie rating system, since everyone's familiar with that already, but I agree that PG13 is a very wide spectrum. If you laid out the parameters of the color code very specifically, that could be really effective. Sorry I'm not able to add any advice, but I think you're on the right track. Let us know what you come up with.

Laura | 11 comments Hi Joy and Tracy,
You may want to check the rating system I use on my book review blog Library of Clean Reads.
http://libraryofcleanreads.blogspot.com
It works for me and it is specific enough for readers to judge the elements included or excluded in the book I am reviewing.
Hope this helps!
Laura

joy *the clean-reader extraordinaire* (joytotheworld) | 98 comments thanks to both of you. and laura, congratulations on your recent writerly achievements. :)
i think i'm going to go with a basic movie rating system, with the following addition:

pg13 green ... for something i wouldn't want a kid reading, but fine for teens or adults.

pg13 yellow ... some "mature" content or language, but treated appropriately, proceed with caution, in other words

pg13 red ... enough language or sexuality to make me stop reading completely, but not to the "R rated" level yet. a no go.

what do you think? is that fairly self-evident? i think it will work for me.

Laura | 11 comments Your rating system sounds good! The colors really do help to differentiate what's appropriate and for who. And thanks for reading my review.
Laura :-)

Tracy | 75 comments Joy, that makes perfect sense to me. Love it! I would like to employ the same thing here if that's okay. Not quite sure if there's a way to tag the books in the bookshelf with this rating, but if anyone can figure that out, please let me know.

Janaleefish | 4 comments I really liked Laura's system for rating books. I think that the specifications of what elements are included helps me be more confident in my decision to read or not read a book. But I'm not really reading for my kids yet. My oldest is 5 and we stick with Juni B. Jones and Magic Treehouse. I can see how a movie rating system could work for YA fiction. Just my 2 cents.

Thanks for your feedback! It's good to know what others think of my rating system.
