SOLVED. YA Fantasy: title might be close to The Gods of the Mountain , ends with boy giving up his flute to the mountain god to save is sick mother?

A teenager who's mother is sick is sent to join an exploration team in a far away jungle where he meets a plurilingal girl. They set off through the jungle to find the magical mountain where live a god whom accomplish a single wish in exchange from the person's most precious object. stuff happens, they manage to get to that place and the boy exchange his flute to get his mother to heal. mm there was also something about the teenagers being able to get into the minds of animals (a bird for one, a panther for the other) and see the way to the mountain from their perspective.
the book must be around 10 years old, and i've been looking for it for... well 10 years. so if you could help, it would be greatly (greatly.) appreciated!
