Short story easy - Of Mice and MenFavourite standalone that you may like, I think I'll go with The Wall of Winnipeg and Me or The Curse of Chalion or The Host or Song of the Beast
Depending on your mood you could choose one of these. :D
One short story I haven't read yet but we need to be reading together : Annie Bellet stuff ! for example Winter's Bite
I have read The Host, except that all of them look great, Btw is The Curse of Chalion a standalone or a duology?
Elinor Master of Gifs wrote: "One short story I haven't read yet but we need to be reading together : Annie Bellet stuff ! for example Winter's Bite"Yess of course - all of her short stories :D
And what about a standalone and a novella?
Elinor Master of Gifs wrote: "One short story I haven't read yet but we need to be reading together : Annie Bellet stuff ! for example Winter's Bite"We can do a Annie Bellett short a month in MacHalo!
Karishma wrote: "I have read The Host, except that all of them look great, Btw is The Curse of Chalion a standalone or a duology?"You can read Curse of Chalion as a standalone though it is a duology per se. Different POVs.
As short stories go, I liked even Be Strong And Finish The Drive and Tucker's Way. Both of them have sequels but still I liked them.

I can find Of Mice and Men, I will look for these two also!
Sadly I don't have any short story to recommend, as I rarly read them... But I would like to recommend 2 standalones Momo, it's a cute children book, but the author has a special way to write books that suit children and adults both, he adds cultural problems to his story that make you wonder what really should be important in life and so it's for people of all ages. :)
And The Martian, I loved this one!
I'm not sure what does count as novella, but I liked The Seventh Bride, it's also on Kindle Unlimited and the audiobook was great!
Karishma wrote: "Yes!Also, we are restarting our club from today right?
And see your PM!"
I set the One Story a Day schedule so that we restart next week (on the 7th). I'm a bit swamped in things to do (mostly paperwork I ignored while on vacation....) and BRs to start. Is that OK?
For standalones, I recommend:The Lions of Al-Rassan
and
Guns of the Dawn
For Novella, I recommend:
Shadows for Silence in the Forests of Hell
and
Homecoming (You can also find it in the anthology Legends II.
For short story, I recommend
Zoo Day by Jim Butcher found in Brief Cases
and
either Great Wall of Mars or Galactic North in Galactic North by Alastair Reynolds.
Standalone: Burial Rites Not fantasy but I thought it was amazing!
Not sure if Roverandom counts as a novella but it's geat if you're looking for something cute and easy :)

Thank you - will shadows for silence work as a standalone for someone who hasn't read Sanderson's other work?
Bea wrote: "Standalone: Burial Rites Not fantasy but I thought it was amazing!

Thanks, I have already read Roverandom - it's so good :D
Novella would mean anything between 75-175 pages for me but I think general definition is 250 pages.
Do you have any other suggestions?
I second Guns of the Dawn
Short story: During the Dance is by Mark Lawrence but not fantasy.
Novella: Perfect State Scifi, Sanderson.

Yes, it's so precious, right?
I'm not a big novella-reader to be honest...
If you need another Fantasy-standalone, The Library at Mount Char is great!

Shadows for Silence in the Forests of Hell
Yeah, its set in the Cosmere universe, but it does not directly depend on or reference other books.
Another Sanderson you could try with almost no internal references at all is The Emperor's Soul
I have shelves for these challenges last year so you might want to take a look:Standalone;

I'm thinking about it, but it seems I don't read that many stand alone...
Thanks Niki, I'm adding Shadows for Silence anyway, can you suggest a new one?And I have read All systems red - it was great!
Thanks.
I saw it on another thread and OF COURSE this is one of my favorite stand alone - favorite, period : Station Eleven !
Elinor Master of Gifs wrote: "I saw it on another thread and OF COURSE this is one of my favorite stand alone - favorite, period : Station Eleven !"Done!
Scott wrote: "I second Guns of the DawnShort story: During the Dance is by Mark Lawrence but not fantasy.

Thanks Scott, since I'm already adding Guns via Arkadeb could you suggest something else too?
And any genre works for me except horror!
I can't think of any novellas or short stories because the only ones I read tend to be linked to series I'm reading. However, one of my favourite ever novels I'd like to nominate is American Gods. And there's some tie in short stories if you like it! :)

Thank you, Neil Gaiman is mostly misses with me but I have been looking for an excuse to try just one more and this gives me the perfect excuse!
I don’t read a lot of standalones or novellas (unless they’re tied to a series), but I went through my list of books read and the one that popped out was The Siren by Kiera Cass.
I just suggested Goblin Emperor on Virginie’s because that one looks good lol.

Short storyArgh, I barely started to read short stories, and read most of them with you! 😱 Right now, I can only think of When We Were Starless by Simone Heller, published in the issue 145 of Clarkesworld. I think this is my favorite of all shorts I read in 2018. The audio version (narrated by Kate Baker) is amazing :)

Novella: Between the Firmaments by J.Y. Yang.
I haven't read it yet but I think it's something you'd like. Plus, it's available for free (I think :p) on the Book Smugglers Publishing website :D
Standalone: The Golem and the Jinni by Helene Wecker
I'm usually not into magical realism but really loved this one. There's a sequel in the works but you can totally read it as a standalone :D
EDIT: Ah, I'm happy with my standalone choice now; it was this or Tigana but Manju was faster :p

I will add both, thanks!

I am currently reading American Gods and I'm struggling with it. Maybe I'll dnf it...😖
I don't know if this really counts as a short story or movella but i recommend A Cat Called Birmingham. One of the gunniest books I've read. I'm actually rereading it as my first book of 2019 😁.I'll get back to you about a standalone since the only one I can think of at the moment is The Sunne in Splendour and reccing you a 1200+ page book just seems cruel 😂
Hmm. This is either a novella or short story, I'm not sure which. The Dispatcher by John Scalzi. It's 128 pages and I quite enjoyed it last year.
I don't know if you'd be interested in a novella series, but wayward children starting with Every Heart a Doorway is pretty nice.Don't really read short stories except for sherlock holmes.
Standalones:
The Loneliest Girl in the Universe, Ready Player One, Since You've Been Gone or More Than This are all really great!

Aw no! Maybe I'm in the minority then! I adored it.
I nominate my favorite novella (I think?), which is Tolkien's Smith of Wooton Major. It's such a wonderful little tale which has stuck with me since I read it a few months ago

I don't have anything on my TBR so can't post choices for you.
I will set up the bingo post etc when I am at the laptop.
