1. Half of the lights on the Christmas tree are burnt out: Name a book/series/character that started out good but then went downhill.

The Mortal Instruments series by Cassandra Clare. Binged the first three, read the fourth one, quit after that. Should have been a trilogy!

2. Annoying Great Aunt Sally who will not leave you alone: Name a book that you didn’t enjoy, but everyone else seems to love so it never goes away.

The Dinner List by Rebecca Serle. I hated it, but so many people loved it! (Runners Up: The Book Thief, Behind Closed Doors, and Girl, Wash Your Face: Stop Believing the Lies about Who You Are So You Can Become Who You Were Meant to Be)

3. Your pets keep knocking over the Christmas decoration: Name a character that kept messing things up for everyone else (can’t pick a villain!)

My first thought is Neville, poor baby.

4. You hear your parents putting out the presents and learn Santa isn’t real: Name a book you were spoiled for.

One of my coworkers spoiled Anna Karenina for me when I was 60% through the book. Such a bummer!

5. It’s freezing outside: Name a main character you just couldn’t connect with.

Lucy from The Light We Lost. I could not understand her obsession with Gabe... it was not a love story I was interested in.

6. Mariah Carey’s ‘All I Want for Christmas is You’ and it’s giving you anti-romantic feelings: Name a couple you couldn’t stand.

I'm going to come back to Lucy and Gabe from The Light We Lost. Runners up would be Sabrina and Tobias from The Dinner List, who were the same people as Lucy and Gabe but with worse names.

7. That scratchy homemade wool sweater you got for Christmas years ago but won’t get rid of: show some books that have been sitting on your shelves for a while, and you aren’t motivated to read, but you don’t have the heart to get rid of.

Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close by Jonathan Safran Foer Escape from Camp 14 One Man's Remarkable Odyssey from North Korea to Freedom in the West by Blaine Harden Brooklyn by Colm Tóibín The Interestings by Meg Wolitzer

8. Grandma Got Run Over by a Reindeer: Name a character death you still are mad about (warn people for spoilers! You can also use TV or movie deaths)

Honestly still shocked that They Both Die at the End was a literal thing. The title actually spoils the book for you.

9. The malls are overly crowded with holiday shoppers: Name a series that has too many books in it/went on too long

Any series that go beyond trilogies (except for Harry Potter, obvi).

10. The Grinch: Name a main character you HATE (No villains again!)

Snape. Don't fight me on this.

MJ | 1017 comments This is tough! I am not sure I'll be able to answer all of them!

1. Half of the lights on the Christmas tree are burnt out : Name a book/series/character that started out good but then went downhill.

Dune and Ender's Game I loved the first few books of these, but couldn't finish the complete series.

2. Annoying Great Aunt Sally who will not leave you alone : Name a book that you didn’t enjoy, but everyone else seems to love so it never goes away.

Ha. The first thing that popped into my head was The Macarena. Not a book, the song/dance. Its popularity exploded in the bar scene when it came out in 1995 and I couldn't stand it from the very beginning. I spent nearly a year ('95-'96) down under, and was hoping that by the time I got home people would have gotten over it. Australia and New Zealand at the time were blessed havens from that awful song. It still hasn't died. Bleargh.

3. Your pets keep knocking over the Christmas decoration : Name a character that kept messing things up for everyone else (can’t pick a villain!)

Geraden in Stephen R. Donaldson's The Mirror of Her Dreams.

4. You hear your parents putting out the presents and learn Santa isn’t real: Name a book you were spoiled for.

I am sure there are others, but definitely Harry Potter. I had no interest in the books until a group of friends dragged me out to see the first movie. They were all disappointed about the movie (it was magical for me because it was all new) and I got the play by play about everything that the books had, but the movie didn't.

5. It’s freezing outside: Name a main character you just couldn’t connect with.

The main character in Sophie Kinsella's My Not So Perfect Life. The fakest of the fake people trying to make people like them.

6. Mariah Carey’s ‘All I Want for Christmas is You’ and it’s giving you anti-romantic feelings : Name a couple you couldn’t stand.

I loved A Discovery of Witches and the rest of the series, but Matthew and Diana together just irks me. Deborah Harkness doesn't do romance well.

7. That scratchy homemade wool sweater you got for Christmas years ago but won’t get rid of : show some books that have been sitting on your shelves for a while, and you aren’t motivated to read, but you don’t have the heart to get rid of.

I don't know how to do the book cover thing, so here are the titles:
Nostromo
The Wise Man's Fear
Middlemarch

8. Grandma Got Runover by a Reindeer: Name a character death you still are mad about (warn people for spoilers! You can also use TV or movie deaths)

Game of Thrones. Sigh. Harry Potter.
A bunch of deaths in both series were pretty traumatizing.

9. The malls are overly crowded with holiday shoppers: Name a series that has too many books in it/went on too long.

See answer to question 1.

10. The Grinch : Name a main character you HATE (No villians again!)

Hate is such a strong word. I read Weir's The Martian last year and LOVED it. Because of this, I had such high expectations for Artemis and was so disappointed. Jazz as a character was not believable, and bore too much of a resemblance to the guy in The Martian. That's the best I can do.

Brittany Morrison | 478 comments 1. Half of the lights on the Christmas tree are burnt out : Name a book/series/character that started out good but then went downhill.

I didn’t mind Twilight but I feel like every book after just kept getting worse and worse.

2. Annoying Great Aunt Sally who will not leave you alone : Name a book that you didn’t enjoy, but everyone else seems to love so it never goes away.

Ready Player One I feel like I heard so many people talking about it this past year and I just couldn’t get into it. I didn’t end up finishing it.

3. Your pets keep knocking over the Christmas decoration : Name a character that kept messing things up for everyone else (can’t pick a villain!)

Lula Mortiz in Bruja Born. She honestly didn’t have bad intentions but she had some bad ideas.

4. You hear your parents putting out the presents and learn Santa isn’t real: Name a book you were spoiled for.

My friend brought me The Hot Zone: The Terrifying True Story of the Origins of the Ebola Virus to work the other day and one of the paramedic students saw it and gave me the entire synopsis. Yeahhhhh didn’t read it yet.

5. It’s freezing outside: Name a main character you just couldn’t connect with.

Amanda in Fever Dream it was a very strange book and I was too busy trying to follow what was going on to connect with the character.

6. Mariah Carey’s ‘All I Want for Christmas is You’ and it’s giving you anti-romantic feelings : Name a couple you couldn’t stand.

I love love love the Harry Potter series but cannot stand Ron and Hermione together.

7. That scratchy homemade wool sweater you got for Christmas years ago but won’t get rid of : show some books that have been sitting on your shelves for a while, and you aren’t motivated to read, but you don’t have the heart to get rid of.

Nausea by Jean-Paul Sartre Simon vs. the Homo Sapiens Agenda (Creekwood, #1) by Becky Albertalli Dreaming for Freud A Novel by Sheila Kohler

8. Grandma Got Runover by a Reindeer: Name a character death you still are mad about (warn people for spoilers! You can also use TV or movie deaths)

Honestly every single person who died in Harry Potter who isn’t Voldemort.

9. The malls are overly crowded with holiday shoppers: Name a series that has too many books in it/went on too long

I loved it when I was a kid, but The Babysitters Club series went on forever and there are only so many spins you can put on a group of teenage babysitters.

10. The Grinch : Name a main character you HATE (No villians again!)

Bella in the The Twilight Saga

The 5th Wave - I saw the movie first.

Lisbeth Salander in The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. I loved the books and movies but really couldn't relate to her as a person! Who can??

6. Mariah Carey’s ‘All I Want for Christmas is You’ and it’s giving you anti-romantic feelings : Name a couple you couldn’t stand.

Book: ???

7. That scratchy homemade wool sweater you got for Christmas years ago but won’t get rid of : show some books that have been sitting on your shelves for a while, and you aren’t motivated to read, but you don’t have the heart to get rid of.

The Road to Little Dribbling Adventures of an American in Britain by Bill Bryson Quicksand by Steve Toltz
The Road to Little Dribbling: Adventures of an American in Britain and Quicksand were two of my first FB giveaways that I won several years ago. I was so excited to win them and there they sit...

8. Grandma Got Runover by a Reindeer: Name a character death you still are mad about (warn people for spoilers! You can also use TV or movie deaths)

Several in the A Game of Thrones (series) but at least one character needed to die and I was happy for that!

9. The malls are overly crowded with holiday shoppers: Name a series that has too many books in it/went on too long

SF and Fantasy series are what come to my mind, like, The Eye of the World (never read it for that reason); Dune; Ender's Game; Xanth; Stephen King's The Dark Tower series (I quit reading it because of the long time between publications. I lost interest!)

10. The Grinch : Name a main character you HATE (No villains again!)

Draco Malfoy from Harry Potter

Xanth! Yes! I loved that series until I didn't. I'd probably just roll my eyes if I tried to read it now!

Rachelnyc | 943 comments Love this but definitely not as easy as it appears at first glance!

1. Half of the lights on the Christmas tree are burnt out : Name a book/series/character that started out good but then went downhill.

A disappointing book for me this year was The German Girl. It started out interesting but went downhill quickly.

2. Annoying Great Aunt Sally who will not leave you alone : Name a book that you didn’t enjoy, but everyone else seems to love so it never goes away.

The Girls I loved the premise of this and with all the hype I expected it to be an interesting look into what it may have been like to be in the Manson Family but that's not what it turned out to be at all.

3. Your pets keep knocking over the Christmas decoration : Name a character that kept messing things up for everyone else (can’t pick a villain!)

I have to go with poor Neville Longbottom.

4. You hear your parents putting out the presents and learn Santa isn’t real: Name a book you were spoiled for.

Wait, what?? Santa isn't real?? ;)

5. It’s freezing outside: Name a main character you just couldn’t connect with.

Lo from The Woman in Cabin 10. For a journalist, she made a lot of dumb decisions that helped move the plot along.

6. Mariah Carey’s ‘All I Want for Christmas is You’ and it’s giving you anti-romantic feelings : Name a couple you couldn’t stand.

I have to go with Celestial and Roy from An American Marriage. I absolutely loved the book but couldn't stand most of the characters.

7. That scratchy homemade wool sweater you got for Christmas years ago but won’t get rid of : show some books that have been sitting on your shelves for a while, and you aren’t motivated to read, but you don’t have the heart to get rid of.

Alexander Hamilton
Cane River
Purity
The Island at the Center of the World: The Epic Story of Dutch Manhattan and the Forgotten Colony That Shaped America
I'll get to them eventually!

8. Grandma Got Runover by a Reindeer: Name a character death you still are mad about (warn people for spoilers! You can also use TV or movie deaths)

I'm going with a TV death for this one (view spoiler). I thought it was well done and impactful but I still miss the character.

9. The malls are overly crowded with holiday shoppers: Name a series that has too many books in it/went on too long

10. The Grinch : Name a main character you HATE (No villians again!)

Robinson Crusoe

Rachel A. (abyssallibrarian) | 3287 comments 1. Half of the lights on the Christmas tree are burnt out : Name a book/series/character that started out good but then went downhill.
The Matched trilogy. I really liked the first book, but found the second one incredibly boring. The third one was a bit better, but it felt like a completely separate story that just happened to feature the same characters, not part of an overall story arc.

2. Annoying Great Aunt Sally who will not leave you alone : Name a book that you didn’t enjoy, but everyone else seems to love so it never goes away.
I wouldn't necessarily say that these ones are everywhere, but I wasn't really a fan of The Underground Railroad, Love & Gelato and The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian.

3. Your pets keep knocking over the Christmas decoration : Name a character that kept messing things up for everyone else (can’t pick a villain!)
The Cat in the Hat was the first one that came to mind. He causes so much trouble for the children.

4. You hear your parents putting out the presents and learn Santa isn’t real: Name a book you were spoiled for.
Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince

5. It’s freezing outside: Name a main character you just couldn’t connect with.
I'm having a hard time connecting with Cass from Keep Me Posted, which I am currently reading.

6. Mariah Carey’s ‘All I Want for Christmas is You’ and it’s giving you anti-romantic feelings : Name a couple you couldn’t stand.
I can't think of anything off the top of my head from a book, but I very recently finished watching the Gossip Girl TV series for the first time, and I really did not like Dan and Blair as a couple, nor did I like most of Nate's relationships.

7. That scratchy homemade wool sweater you got for Christmas years ago but won’t get rid of : show some books that have been sitting on your shelves for a while, and you aren’t motivated to read, but you don’t have the heart to get rid of.
I have a really, really hard time getting rid of books in general, and I also have a hard time removing books from my TBR list. Here are a few that I can think of, which I've owned for a while but have no plans to read any time soon:

The Breakdown Lane by Jacquelyn Mitchard The Da Vinci Code (Robert Langdon, #2) by Dan Brown American Gods by Neil Gaiman

8. Grandma Got Runover by a Reindeer: Name a character death you still are mad about (warn people for spoilers! You can also use TV or movie deaths)
Books: A specific character's death in Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix
TV: Tara on Buffy the Vampire Slayer

9. The malls are overly crowded with holiday shoppers: Name a series that has too many books in it/went on too long
I have to agree with the person above who mentioned The Babysitter's Club. I absolutely loved that series, but it got very repetitive by the end.

10. The Grinch : Name a main character you HATE (No villians again!)
Danielle from Saving Max and Beth from The Deep End of the Ocean. It's been a couple of years since I read either of these books, but these characters still both really frustrate me.

The Maximum Ride series for sure! I loved the first 4, maybe even up to 5 books as a kid but then it got so shitty I've never been able to finish it.

2. Annoying Great Aunt Sally who will not leave you alone : Name a book that you didn’t enjoy, but everyone else seems to love so it never goes away.
Umm.. I never fully got into The Hunger Games I actually loved the first book but I didn't really feel the need to finish it and I definitely did not understand the obsession about it.

3. Your pets keep knocking over the Christmas decoration : Name a character that kept messing things up for everyone else (can’t pick a villain!)

Dumbledore messed up a loooot. (view spoiler)

4. You hear your parents putting out the presents and learn Santa isn’t real: Name a book you were spoiled for.

Harry Potter but that's because I'm about 20 years late lol.

5. It’s freezing outside: Name a main character you just couldn’t connect with.

I feel like I had a hard time connecting with the characters from the Heroes of Olympus spin off series. I never got past The Son of Neptune, probably due to that. I'm gonna try again next year though.

6. Mariah Carey’s ‘All I Want for Christmas is You’ and it’s giving you anti-romantic feelings : Name a couple you couldn’t stand.

JK ROWLING CAN'T WRITE ROMANCE!!! There!! I said it!! Like in theory, I could like Ron/Hermoine, but why Joanne thinks constant bickering is code for "they're in love" I'll never know.

7. That scratchy homemade wool sweater you got for Christmas years ago but won’t get rid of : show some books that have been sitting on your shelves for a while, and you aren’t motivated to read, but you don’t have the heart to get rid of.

The Maze Runner (The Maze Runner, #1) by James Dashner Divergent (Divergent, #1) by Veronica Roth
Uglies (Uglies, #1) by Scott Westerfeld

8. Grandma Got Runover by a Reindeer: Name a character death you still are mad about (warn people for spoilers! You can also use TV or movie deaths)

Ugh my absolute BOY sirius. I miss him. And I haven't read it yet but everyone in Deathly Hallows hahah that's gonna kill me in a couple days.
9. The malls are overly crowded with holiday shoppers: Name a series that has too many books in it/went on too long
Again, Maximum Ride. Some others that I haven't read yet (or won't) that are for sure too long - Mortal Instruments, Throne of Glass.

10. The Grinch : Name a main character you HATE (No villians again!)
Bella! That musty bitch
Oh and Snape. I have a weird thing with him where I definitely don't like him but I loooove reading/watching his scenes.

2. Annoying Great Aunt Sally who will not leave you alone : Name a book that you didn’t enjoy, but everyone else seems to love so it never goes away.

I really don't care about the book Im reading now which makes me sad. Also I can't remember Temeraires owners name so there you have it. Not connecting. I love the dragons though.

I am going to go with the Sookie Stackhouse books by Charlaine Harris. I really enjoyed them at first but never then either I got over them or they went downhill because I never was able to finish the series.
2. Annoying Great Aunt Sally who will not leave you alone : Name a book that you didn’t enjoy, but everyone else seems to love so it never goes away.
Pride and Prejudice
3. Your pets keep knocking over the Christmas decoration : Name a character that kept messing things up for everyone else (can’t pick a villain!)
I first thought of Elena Richardson from Little Fires Everywhere. Her meddling ways just made a mess of things.
4. You hear your parents putting out the presents and learn Santa isn’t real: Name a book you were spoiled for.
This one is hard, I think I am lucky not to hear books spoilers very often. Maybe heard some minor ones for a few of the Harry Potter books.

The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald

This is a hard one because I think most of the time deaths make a story move forward and without them it might make thing less enjoyable. I was kind of mad at (view spoiler) death in vAll the Light We Cannot See

I will use the same answer as the first questions - Sookie Stackhouse books by Charlaine Harris.

Divergent. I really liked the first book, but at the end I couldn't stand the main character. The Sookie Stackhouse was another series that I really enjoyed at the beginning, but I was so tired at the end, that it was really difficult to finish the series.

2. Annoying Great Aunt Sally who will not leave you alone : Name a book that you didn’t enjoy, but everyone else seems to love so it never goes away.

Twilight !!!! So many love it and I just finished because it was the series chosen by a book club .... but how I suffered.

Tom Sawyer. I know he is the hero, the smart guy, but I can't stand the way he abuse of the ignorance of Huck.

It was one of the book of the series Tunnels and I spoiled the book myself, because I have this horrible habit to read random paragraphs ahead and once I just read the death of my favorite character way before I should!!! :'(

Most recently it was Spensa from Skyward by Brandon Sanderson. I had to DNF this book, despite how much I love Sanderson's writing due to this fact.

Any couple that has a mating bond/reason to be jealous built in. There are so many books like this, so I will just say that they all fit this one.

-The Private Series by Kate Brian I really enjoyed the mystery aspect of the series but then it got too fantasy for me.

2. Annoying Great Aunt Sally who will not leave you alone : Name a book that you didn’t enjoy, but everyone else seems to love so it never goes away.
-Twilight

3. Your pets keep knocking over the Christmas decoration : Name a character that kept messing things up for everyone else (can’t pick a villain!)
-Delilah from The Solace of Water. I haven't finished this book yet but she definitely seems to keep making things worse for herself and her family so far.

4. You hear your parents putting out the presents and learn Santa isn’t real: Name a book you were spoiled for.
-Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone. I spoiled it for myself by watching the movie first.

-Hermione. Even in the first movie she was annoying. I'm even annoyed with the fact that her personality changed instantly about 170 pages into the first book.

6. Mariah Carey’s ‘All I Want for Christmas is You’ and it’s giving you anti-romantic feelings : Name a couple you couldn’t stand.

1. Half of the lights on the Christmas tree are burnt out : Nevada Barr's National Park Series used to be one of my favorite long running series. Somewhere along the way the books started getting really dark and just weird. They started feeling like thrillers rather than the innocent mysteries they started out being. It might not have been so bad if the thrillers were good ones, but alas, they were not.

2. Annoying Great Aunt Sally who will not leave you alone : Twilight, Fifty Shades of Grey and unpopular opinion but Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone. One or more of those books seems to come up in conversation or on the internet every single day. I can't get away from them!

3. Your pets keep knocking over the Christmas decoration : Hm, I can't really think of one for this category

4. You hear your parents putting out the presents and learn Santa isn’t real: Beartown, still one of my favorite books ever, but I felt like the blurb on the back really gave away one of the most shocking parts of the book.....well, it would have been shocking if we didn't know it was coming all along. Strange choice by the publishers for sure.

5. It’s freezing outside: War Storm...I read the entire series prior to this and then just couldn't finish the last in the series. I honestly by the last book was just so annoyed with all the whiny brat characters. I can't take it anymore!

6. Mariah Carey’s ‘All I Want for Christmas is You’ and it’s giving you anti-romantic feelings : I am not a fan of most romantic relationships in books, especially when they turn into love triangles or "I'm just a plain girl but every hot guy in town just can't stop falling in love with me, I don't get it" tropes. UGH, no, just leave the romance to harlequin and get on with the real story!

7. That scratchy homemade wool sweater you got for Christmas years ago but won’t get rid of :
The Magyar Venus (Lara McClintoch Archeological Mystery, #8) by Lyn Hamilton The Silkworm (Cormoran Strike, #2) by Robert Galbraith The Poisonwood Bible by Barbara Kingsolver...but I swear I will read them....someday :/

8. Grandma Got Runover by a Reindeer: Charlaine Harris absolutely murdered the Sookie Stackhouse series with her follow up book where she briefly describes what happened to each of the series characters after the series ended. She was horrible to every character. Everyone the reader wanted to be happy died or had spouses die, they went on to live terrible lives.....every single one of them. She should have left the future to the imaginations of her devoted readers if she hated all those characters so much. :(

9. The malls are overly crowded with holiday shoppers: The Nevada Barr series I mentioned above for one, and most any series that goes on for more than 3 books. After 3, I am ready for something new thank you.

10. The Grinch : Other than War Storm and that series, I can't think of any characters that I hate. I guess some I am supposed to hate but I usually enjoy their part in the story anyway.

It is just getting to long. Confessor is the last book I have read in the series and do not plan on reading more.

The Book Thief or any book by Stephen King. Sorry I just do not like his writting style.

YA love triangles. They are so cliche.

This would have been the one if you asked about two weeks ago. The Diary of a Young Girl. It was not what I expected in a good way.

8. Grandma Got Runover by a Reindeer: Name a character death you still are mad about (warn people for spoilers! You can also use TV or movie deaths)
I was not angry about the deaths, just terribly sad. Where the Red Fern Grows It was a book that we read in public school and the sadness still haunts me today.

9. The malls are overly crowded with holiday shoppers: Name a series that has too many books in it/went on too long
"In Death" series by J.D. Robb It is the main reason I started on Goodreads. I could never remember which books I had read already.

10. The Grinch : Name a main character you HATE (No villians again!)
I can not think of a specific character, maybe I have successfully blocked that out, just a type. The whiny, social climber that fills every tropes possible.
