C.P. Cabaniss (cpcabaniss) | 639 comments You have until the 24th of December to post a poem and from the 25th to around the 31st of December, we’ll vote for which one we thought was best!

Please post directly into the topic and not a link. Please don’t use a poem previously used in this group. Only one submission per person is allowed.

Your poem can be of any length!

This week’s topic is: Gift

The rules are pretty loose. You could write a poem about anything that has to do with the subject/photo but it must relate to the topic somehow.

Most of all have fun!

Awash in tissue, ribbon, paper
with snowmen and angels,
the grandchildren squeal
"Look! . . . Look!". . .
rejoicing in Santa's largesse.

Their parents, my children,
need less – a talisman
from one they love
to show friends at book club,
or unsheathe on the tennis court.

I smile. Gifts for me abound
this Christmas and cannot be wrapped –
a kaleidoscope of family to reach
beyond my years and color the world.

TITLE: Solving My Problems With Violence
GENRE: Heavy Metal Song
RATING: PG-13 for swearing

VERSE 1
It’s the gift that keeps on giving
It’s the hell that keeps on living
A smack for refusing to listen
To the orders you have been given
I’m not asking you to commit murder
To turn dead bodies into hamburgers
It’s a simple task, not too much to ask
Yet you choose to be a pain in the ass

CHORUS
Solving my problems with violence
Is better than pacifistic silence
Is better than being a pushover
To someone who should act older

VERSE 2
Keep your ears open, your mouth shut
For your excuses, I give zero fucks
Your angry stare means nothing to me
It’s the final warning for you to heed

CHORUS
Solving my problems with violence
Is better than pacifistic silence
Is better than being a pushover
To someone who should act older

BRIDGE
Pushing me to the edge
I’m going out of my head
Smack, smack, smack, smack
I’m going on the final attack

VERSE 3
I’m the teacher, you’re the student
Quit pretending like you are stupid
Quit resisting every word I say
I didn’t come here to fucking play

EXTENDED CHORUS
Solving my problems with violence
Is better than pacifistic silence
Is better than being a pushover
To someone who should act older
Solving my problems with rage
It gets much worse with old age
It may get me locked in a cage
At least I can call myself a sage

Edward Davies | 1727 comments Title : The Gift Of Rhyme
Poet : Edward Davies

I have a gift to give to you
The gift is this short rhyme
I hope you appreciate it
And think it quite sublime

I’m sorry that it is in verse
And that it has a beat
It seems that in the modern age
Couplets are obsolete

But I still cling on to this style
Like some poor dying swan
I just don’t think that poetry
With rhyme should be so wrong

I’ll rhyme until the day I die
And think that you should too
Because of this I’ve made a rhyme
Presented here for you.

Sea-blue eyes, with shale-brown hair;
patient, but of molten rage;
whose voices trill the evening air;
a young mother, eons her age.

These things she willed me at my birth:
fear and firelight, thirst and rain,
a need of her alone, the earth,
and deep sleep in her arms again.
