Children's book with characters going from one book to another by climbing off the pages

I read this book about 17 years ago. In it a dragon and the three little pigs, just to name a few characters, climbed off the pages of their stories and explored other children's stories adding more characters to their group as they went. It was very imaginative and the illustrations were beautiful.

The Bravest Ever Bear by Allan Ahlberg (illustrated by Paul Howard) could be another possibility (though I think Mai is onto something here!). ;) Davie Wiesner's books are GORGEOUS.

I think it's The Three Pigs, too. One of the best picture books ever, I think.
