Until I found a book with a pink cover in the shop and couldn't resist
The Magician of Lublin by Isaac Bashevis Singer

When he is at home in Lublin, Yasha is married to his religious wife. When in Warsaw or out in the country he is a famous escape artist / acrobat / circus man.
Yasha is also a bit like Alex in Family Ties - juggling three loves
The story itself focuses on few days only - where everything collapses.

The book is actually about a spiritual crisis; about the choices between his traditional life, the free artistic world, and the bourgeoisie world of comfort

The story is very small but beautifully done. Bashevis Singer recreated Poland of the late 19th century. Warsaw as it becomes a big city
It all feels very alive and the characters are interesting.
There are amusing parts and sad parts and all in all it's a great little book

Joanne (joabroda1) | 7478 comments This sounds wonderful-I am always looking for books with a Polish touch or author. I am from Polish stock, my husband was born there-on to the list, which is stretching to the stratosphere....
