Hehe, yes, I may have gotten carried away with reserving space when it takes me so long to complete one post to my satisfaction! 😂 I wanted to list in one place all the books that I plan to read next year for my personal “classics of East Asia challenge and couldn’t resist adding a few additional options! 😅

Thank you! Right now I’m enjoying planning my reading and collecting the books — especially when I find a lovely edition! 😁 I am looking forward to reading them! 😃

But I am curious, what is “gophering”? Google could not supply me with a satisfactory answer. 🤔

I'm looking forward to seeing what you read for the year in this challenge. On of my favorite courses at the university was in East Asian History.

That's fair. It took me quite a while to establish my own personal challenges, and I still haven't filled out the last reserved board.

Yup I checked gophering too and couldn't find its meaning either...but as far as I understand from its usage..its searching/googling books to meet our requirements , for a challenge maybe...

Thank you! And that does sound like it would be a most interesting course! I know far too little East Asian history and am working to rectify that. Any recommendations you might have in that regard would be welcome! 😊

Ahh, yes, that makes sense, and I have enjoyed going through lists and recommendations and such to put together this list!
And thank you! 😁

Erin (erinm31) | 609 comments I’m still working out what format is best and will eventually include some info on why I’ve chosen these books and authors and I’m sure I have more to add to the lists. I welcome suggestions! I want to gain, as much as one can through literature, a greater understanding of the histories and cultures of East and Southeast Asia, with a focus on China and Japan. I am also working on learning Mandarin Chinese and Japanese and will say that it is very interesting to study these languages together as they entirely different languages, and yet the former clearly influenced the latter and they share many characters. I wish to read the major works of each country and welcome recommendations. I also seek to include memoirs by people from different backgrounds to broaden my understanding. I think I should also include some actual history texts but hesitate to include works by western authors without recommendations.
