Celia Buell (celiareadsbooks) | 627 comments So if I'm reading something that counts for a January category and I finish more than half of it in January and then the rest at the very beginning of February, does that count?

Go ahead and count it - you do technically have the entire year as the official challenge time frame, so if you don't finish your book in the month it fits, you can continue into the next month. :)

Jennifer (jhaltenburger) | 635 comments Holding Breath: A Memoir of AIDS' Wildfire Days was terrible. Another Day in the Death of America: A Chronicle of Ten Short Lives, Dopesick: Dealers, Doctors, and the Drug Company that Addicted America, A Beautiful, Terrible Thing: A Memoir of Marriage and Betrayal, Everything is Horrible and Wonderful: A Tragicomic Memoir of Genius, Heroin, Love and Loss, and What Stands in a Storm: Three Days in the Worst Superstorm to Hit the South's Tornado Alley were all wonderful in their own ways, for all that they deal with grim subject matter. I enjoyed The Purple Diaries: Mary Astor and the Most Sensational Hollywood Scandal of the 1930s, but Seduction: Sex, Lies, and Stardom in Howard Hughes's Hollywood got tedious before it ended. The others were just good books -- not standouts, left me feeling like I now knew as much as I needed to about those subjects.... Chappaquiddick: Power, Privilege, and the Ted Kennedy Cover-Up alluded to some kind of connection between the death of the author and the book itself that I didn't not find to be borne out either by the book or by what I read elsewhere about the author -- yes, he committed suicide (seven years after the book was written) but he was also depressed over a divorce at the time, and there's an old saying about hoofbeats and horses..... isn't there?

Jennifer (jhaltenburger) | 635 comments Made more progress so far this month on this challenge:

February- International Day of Women and Girls in Science The Girls of Atomic City: The Untold Story of the Women Who Helped Win World War II HIGHLY recommend if you're looking for a read for this subject -- one of the most enjoyable books I've read so far this year.

June- World Refugee Day The Hotel on Place Vendome: Life, Death, and Betrayal at the Hotel Ritz in Paris good book about the Ritz during WWII, which hosted some interesting people and was able to stay open and survive because the owners were swiss and therefore neutral throughout the hostilities.

November- Veterans Day (US): War & Peace Hard Measures: How Aggressive CIA Actions After 9/11 Saved American Lives Not bad, writer definitely has an agenda but it's hard to find books about modern politically charged topics that don't, so I'm not holding that against it...

message 31: by Jennifer (new)

Jennifer (jhaltenburger) | 635 comments Well. Stunned to say I'm finished with this challenge:

July - Astronomy, Astrophysics and Space Flight Light Falls Space, Time, and an Obsession of Einstein by Brian Greene Light Falls: Space, Time, and an Obsession of EinsteinWonderful book and the audio presentation is stunning.

September: World Tourism Day: How Paris Became Paris The Invention of the Modern City by Joan DeJean How Paris Became Paris: The Invention of the Modern City I had no idea Paris pioneered so many things we take for granted in our cities!

October: World Food Day: The Case Against Sugar by Gary Taubes The Case Against Sugar If you needed something else to get you to change your diet, this ought to do it...

November: Important Events from World History: The Generals Patton, MacArthur, Marshall, and the Winning of World War II by Winston Groom The Generals: Patton, MacArthur, Marshall, and the Winning of World War II

December Folklore and Mythology: The Black Hand The Epic War Between a Brilliant Detective and the Deadliest Secret Society in American History by Stephan Talty The Black Hand: The Epic War Between a Brilliant Detective and the Deadliest Secret Society in American History Now, the Black Hand has become kind of a mythical thing buried deep in the beginnings of the modern day Mafia and its lore. But in the early 1900s, the threat was very real and an entire population was terrorized by it. FASCINATING book!
