An evocative and stirring novel about a young woman living in the fascinating and rarely portrayed community of Yemenite Jews of the mid-twentieth century,

The saga begins in 1920 with the passage of the Orphan s Decree, where any unbetrothed Jewish child left orphaned will be instantly adopted by the local Muslim community. With her parents health failing, and no spousal prospects in sight, Adela Damari s situation looks dire until her uncle arrives from a faraway city, bringing with him a cousin and aunt who introduce Adela to the powerful rituals of henna tattooing.

Suddenly, Adela’s eyes are opened to the world, and she begins to understand what it means to love another and one’s heritage. She is imperiled, however, when her parents die and a prolonged drought threatens their long-established way of life. She and her extended family flee to the city of Aden where Adela encounters old loves, discovers her true calling, and is ultimately betrayed by the people and customs she once held dear.

Henna House is a rich, spirited, and sensuous tale of love, loss, betrayal, forgiveness, and the dyes that adorn the skin and pierce the heart.

Denise | 2468 comments I thought an e-book was available on Hoopla through the library but it turns out to be an audiobook. I checked it out but listened to about 5 minutes of it and not thrilled with the narrator - also there are probably a lot of non-English words I want to see. So, there are 18 copies available in my library system I'm going to try to get the book. I may listen to some of the audiobook until I get a hard copy of the book. One way or another I'll be reading along.

Jan | 11600 comments Hope you get one soon Denise! A narrator can certainly make or break a book.

message 14: by Karen ♐ (new)

Karen ♐ (kmk1214) | 614 comments It definitely can. I love audio books.

Jan | 11600 comments In preparation to start this I always read the end notes that an author has included first. She shares her resources for the history of Henna and directs us to several books and one interesting website I thought I would share for those of you who like to do a little extra research with their reading.

It's fascinating reading :)

Denise | 2468 comments I am slightly familiar with Yemenite Jews because of Operation Magic Carpet which brought many of them to Israel in 1949-50 which I learned about in Hebrew school. It is very controversial now among Yeminite Jews in Israel but I won't say anything more about it in case it is in this book.

I did a google search for images of Yemen Jews 1920s, and similar terms to see what they looked like remembering the wonderful costumes I'd seen. I like to do google image searches when reading historical fiction for the place and times lived in to fill in what may not be described in the book.
