This thread is for nominations for THEMED category for January 2019.

THEMED books need to be currently in print on at least one platform, and fit the theme for the month. If there is no spaceship involved, then it must take place on another planet with a technological society. If it is part of a series, it needs to be suitable to being read without having read other books in the series. Frequently books in this category will be those from major publishers that are no longer in print as paperback (or haven't yet made it to paperback), but Kindle Exclusive books are allowed too. It is perfectly fine to nominate a book here that would qualify for one of our other categories.

CURRENT THEME: Machines as Characters. At least one significant character of the story must be a machine of some kind. That is, not biological at all but still sapient. See these threads for ideas:
https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...
https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...

RULES:
* you may nominate one book on this thread.
* you may second as many nominations as you like on this thread.
* it is okay to nominate the same book on more than one nomination thread, as long as it meets the criteria
* don't nominate a book we already have on our bookshelf
* If a book you nominate or second is selected, you are expected to post at least one comment about it on the thread about the book.
* In about two weeks I will draw a book randomly, with each second being one raffle ticket for the book. That is, a book with three seconds (so four of us want it) will get three chances in the pool.

It is likely helpful if you know something about a book that has been nominated if you mention it in this thread, whether it is for or against the book.

I'll third Silver Ships. Haven't read it yet, but the synopsis is compelling.

message 5: by Trike (new)

Trike | 583 comments Teresa raves about (and re-reads) the Silver Ships so much that I’m down with that.

message 6: by mel (new)

mel h (psiiminesbitcoin) | 2 comments I tentatively nominate Ancillary Justice by Ann Leckie! A character used to be a machine but isn’t now so idk if that counts but?

Going by memory, I liked Silver Ships better on my second reading than on the first. Some of the books in the series are better than others, at least to my opinion. I reread the series because I care about the characters and it doesn’t matter that I remember the basic action points. Books in other series where recalling the action points spoils the story don’t get reread by me as often.

Mel, we have already read the first two Ancillary books.

message 17: by Veronica (new)

Veronica Scott I'll second Dark Horse by Michelle Diener. She created one of the best Artificial Intelligences I ever read in this novel and the way the human heroine interacts with this alien AI was quite brilliant. And fun! (If I'm supposed to put the seconding somewhere else, forgive me!)

This is the right place for seconds, and explaining why you like the book is great!

message 19: by Veronica (new)

Veronica Scott Thanks! I follow all the discussions but I think this is the first time I've seconded a book. Didn't want to go wrong!

Nominations are now closed. I count these seconds:
Silver Ships 3
All Systems Red 3
Dark Horse 1

Rolling random numbers now.

Teresa Carrigan | 2396 comments Mod
And the random numbers finally gave us Silver Ships!

For those who want All Systems Red I encourage you to nominate it on the Reader thread next month.
