message 8: by Shirley (new)

Shirley | 1075 comments Sure does. It’s also my first book for the year, unbelievably. But I have excuses! Holidays, visitors, family etc etc. Back to reading now though.

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 16861 comments Hope you had a good holiday, Shirley!

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 16861 comments Lol mine too. He couldn't believe the lists and the "ah hah!" moments. I explain it's part of the game, which he understands... but doesn't "get".

Hope it's cool where you are. We're in a furnace down here!

I also struggled with it, Janice. I generously gave it 2 stars, and only because I thought the characterisation was excellent. However, I was left unsatisfied at the end. A very strange book I thought.

Shirley | 1075 comments Rusalka wrote: "I've heard amazing things about that one, Shirley. What you think?"
I really enjoyed reading it, Rusalka. Part of the enjoyment for me was the setting - Brisbane in the 1980s. I was there! But, even with all the violence and tragedy, there’s also some very comical situations that made for some light relief. It’s not a heavy read even though the themes are very dark - drug-dealing, violence, family dysfunction, police corruption, murder.

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 16861 comments Shirley wrote: "It’s not a heavy read even though the themes are very dark"

I love that type of writing. Deftly handled so you don't feel overwhelmed. So glad you enjoyed it!

I do love books where you know the settings, and time is an added bonus. I was remarking to my friends this weekend I am reading a book set in London at the moment, that has:
- a body found around the corner where we stayed in 2017,
- a chase scene past my brother's work, and
- a house raid next to the station in the suburb friends of ours just moved into south of the city and they just sent me photos of the station
And I remarked that that must be how Londoners and New Yorkers feel all the time when they read books, but for us Aussies, it's amazing when books reflect our experiences and places! So novel!

Oh dear, I hate to confess another error. Badge 1 Book 9 is Once Upon a River for the Movie: Simon vs. the Homo Sapiens Agenda which I had already posted Feb 17. So ... The Silent Patient for the Movie Mary Poppins is actually Badge 1 Book 10. I am at your mercy!
