His mom was mentally ill or had tried to kill her self at one point and he was trying to hide it from everyone. They went to the same high school together and they fell in love. He broke up with her when she was leaving for college because he didn’t want to leave his mom. But she got better and told him to leave. He followed her to college to win her back.
