MK (wisny) | 2993 comments While all the 2019 challenges are being posted, this seems like a good time to 'sneak in' to the 2018 challenges, and see how I would have done :D

(will update later)

This one, I know it will turn up an vast empty wasteland. Just looking over my 2018 books so far, I see lots of female authors, but almost all in contemporary fiction. Classic authors, with the exception of one by Katherine Porter, it looks like, are all male.

There's no way I will fill in a decade, or a century, so near the end of the year, I think I'll just make a list of classic books written by female authors that I read in 2018. I have a feeling it's going to turn up just that one (that I hated), by Katherine Porter ...

Bob wrote: "This will be our third year of using a challenge to increase awareness of classics written by women. Formally known as the Women’s Century Challenge, this is the vehicle our group uses to learn about women authors and the classics they've written. Every challenge created, every author and every book listed, becomes a resource for our members to learn about authors and books they haven’t heard of before.

Many of the worlds classics are dominated by male authors, especially the classics written in the 19th century and earlier. This dominance also exists on our group bookshelf, where the male authors out number female authors 92 to 35. Whether this challenge increases the number of women authors nominated to our monthly reading categories, or just helps a member discover a new favorite author or book, it should prove to be worthwhile and fun.

For 2018 we are adding, in addition to a new name, a twist to the challenge, you can choose between two different challenge versions. The first is the familiar challenge from the past two years. Read one book from 10 consecutive decades, one century total. The second is a twist from the past challenge. Read one book per year for 10 consecutive years, one-decade total. Only one version of the challenge is required to participate. For those exceptional readers, over achievers, or gluttons for punishment, feel free to take on both versions.

The Century Challenge: Read 10 books from any 10 consecutive decades (1 book per decade) written by women authors. The authors can only be used once in the challenge. You can use authors previously read by you. Or you can add a level of difficulty to your challenge by selecting only authors you've never read before.

Challenge Example: (Century Challenge)

My Century Challenge, Authors-Some Old Some New
1850-1859 Villette-*Charlotte Brontë, 1853
1860-1869 Sylvia's Lovers-*Elizabeth Gaskell, 1863

1880-1889 Jack and Jill-*Louisa May Alcott, 1880

The Decade Challenge: Read 10 books from any 10 consecutive years (1 book per year) written by women authors. The authors can only be used once in the challenge. Members wanting to participate should create their own discussion thread. When making your selections please use, "add book/author" link to help others view the books selected. This is the easiest way for others to read a book synopsis or view the authors other works.

Selections from this challenge can be used with your other challenges. With some creative planning books and authors selected here can be used to fill other challenge needs in Bingo, A-Z's, and Old & New. Hopefully some of these challenge books will end up being nominated for group reads. Which should result in more women authors finding a home on our group bookshelf."
