UNSUB (UNSUB, #1) by Meg Gardiner

Summary

A riveting psychological thriller inspired by the never-caught Zodiac Killer, about a young detective determined to apprehend the serial murderer who destroyed her family and terrorized a city twenty years earlier.

Caitlin Hendrix has been a Narcotics detective for six months when the killer at the heart of all her childhood nightmares reemerges: the Prophet. An UNSUB—what the FBI calls an unknown subject—the Prophet terrorized the Bay Area in the 1990s and nearly destroyed her father, the lead investigator on the case.

The Prophet’s cryptic messages and mind games drove Detective Mack Hendrix to the brink of madness, and Mack’s failure to solve the series of ritualized murders—eleven seemingly unconnected victims left with the ancient sign for Mercury etched into their flesh—was the final nail in the coffin for a once promising career.

Twenty years later, two bodies are found bearing the haunting signature of the Prophet. Caitlin Hendrix has never escaped the shadow of her father’s failure to protect their city. But now the ruthless madman is killing again and has set his sights on her, threatening to undermine the fragile barrier she rigidly maintains for her own protection, between relentless pursuit and dangerous obsession.

Determined to decipher his twisted messages and stop the carnage, Caitlin ignores her father’s warnings as she draws closer to the killer with each new gruesome murder. Is it a copycat, or can this really be the same Prophet who haunted her childhood? Will Caitlin avoid repeating her father’s mistakes and redeem her family name, or will chasing the Prophet drag her and everyone she loves into the depths of the abyss?

Erica | 46 comments Hi, my name is Erica and I am hosting this group discussion.
I am currently reading the book and have just read chapter 10.
I am loving the book so far. It is very fast pace. I have some suspicions regarding Caitlin's father and also towards the reporter Bart Fletcher.
But would they be killers? Who knows, might be even a copykiller who had ties to the original prophet.

I've finished the book, I loved it but am going to reserve comments until a bit later, I don't want to give anything away too soon.

Erica | 46 comments I have read now 30 chapters and I am suspicious of everyone. Now I am even suspecting Caitlin's boyfriend....

Is anyone else reading this book?

Summer (paradisecity) | 37 comments I read this last year and remember thinking Caitlin was definitely cut from the Clarice Starling cloth. And the villain's motivations seemed quite off to me, as well, but overall it was a decent way to pass some time.

Donna Schmidt | 141 comments Oh my! Love this read! Hard to put down! Anyone else having a specific book they feel they need to read after this one??? Maybe by Dante?

Erica | 46 comments Finished my book yesterday and it was such a good book. I did have a moment when it was revealed who the killer was that I was slightly disappointed. I thought it would be someone that has been already talked about in the book and not a total stranger. The ending though made up for it. It was totally unexpected. Can't wait to read the second book in the series.
