Hour Four discussion: Counting minutes
I only count the reading too! and I also count the time listening to audiobooks and doing other things at the same time.
What do you mean? When I count the readathon time, I include the whole 24 hours, not just the 24hr I actually spend reading.Because if I counted 24hr of reading it would be longer than the designated readathon time.
I use a stopwatch to track actual reading time, and I try to be good about pausing when I switch to social media stuff.
I only count the pages I've read, not so much the time I've spent doing anything! I've set myself the goal of thirty pages an hour, with some hours for sleep, so I'm hoping to reach five hundred pages by the end of the readathon.
Hi Liz! I count both all my active time readathoning (totally a verb!) meaning all the time I am actively a part whether reading or socialising or even snacking - as opposed to perhaps sleeping or doing something else non-related.
And then I use my stop watch to count my active reading time. Mostly to get an idea of how much time I actually spent reading for fun :)
Great question... I count my actual reading time.
I also count my time devoted to the Read a Thon (including reading, social media, etc.)
Compared to time NOT spent doing anything relatable - Talking to my kids, feeding the dogs, etc.
I like that people can do it anyway they want that works for them. That is what makes it fun and accessible to everyone.
I do social media stuff while listening to audiobooks so I count that time too. But when I take a break I stop the clock.

I tend to spend as much time on social media as I do reading. It does detract from my reading time but its what makes Dewey's fun for me :) It also helps to keep me awake for longer rather than slouching in one position and reading for hours.
I only count my actual reading time but next time I think I'll count the social media time too to see how much of a balance I'm getting between the too.
When I'm doing other things (like now for example or when in five minutes I go get lunch) I have my audio book going, so yes I count that time.
I only track my actual reading time, so when I’m on here, or posting on Instagram, I pause it. They’re my little breaks!
I've never thought to track the actual minutes spent doing things - I view the full 24 hours as a community reading experience and just have fun with it. I frequently set a goal for how many books I want to finish, but as long as I'm more or less fully devoted to the Readathon as a whole, I'm happy with whatever I end up finishing with.
I make a spread in my bullet journal that primarily tracks reading time, but I can make a note of extended social media time too. If I'm just quickly checking social media, I don't note it down. But if I'm on for a half hour or more, I'll make a note in the spread. I usually note nap times too (which I inevitably take at some point :P)
I've never actually counted my minutes for the readathon. I normally only count my pages. I hadn't heard others did that, but I think if I didn't listen to audiobooks when I was fiddling around with the social aspects (and most of my general feel the need to goof off time) I'd probably pay more attention to it.
Well know that I've seen this I will be counting any time in Dewey related activity as part of the 24 hours. I practically just doubled my time in seconds! (Since I've been on social media for about an hour now. lol)
I'm trying to be a bit more chill this readathon and counting pages read/audiobook time spent vs. tracking reading time. The time I usually spend tracking I can use doing social media instead! I am keeping an eye on the clock, though, to make sure I'm reading most of the hour for most of the hours.
I include the other activities, too, since I consider them part of the experience! Also, I'm usually more focused on page and book count than time, tbh.

So you mean you say that you ended up reading 20 of the 24hr (for example) during the readathon? Do I have that right?
It's hour four and I havent' actually started. I slept in on purpose (shooting for 15 hours due to other stuff to do and having son in house), but wanted to sleep in and have a nice sleep to start. Now I'm just sitting here updating social media. Did upload audiobook on phone. Starting later than I planned but.... :/

Yeah this one is a little more relaxed for me this time too.
If I keep track of time, it's time spent reading or listening to an audiobook. This year I'm listening to Little Women on audio while also doing the social media stuff. In the past, I had a hard time with this because I kept losing track of the details of my audiobook, but since this is a book I'm familiar with, I can multi-task and still follow the story. I don't bother keeping track of pages or separating out time spent reading print vs. listening to audio.
Actually, I don't really count the time. I just try to see how much reading (and social stuff) I can fit in to the 24hrs, among life stuff. Probably it will only add up to about four hours of solid reading, but that's about three hours more than I usually get in the same time usually so I love the experience. Maybe when my kids are older it will increase...I'd love to have a whole day of reading with very little else going on!
I don't really count anything usually, just commit to a bookish day. I would think tho that anything that is part of the book a thon should count, but not things only tangential like making food...

Correct! for me, I haven't even made it that high! I think I've gotten in around 14 hours. I'm a big sleeper LOL
And looking at everyone's discussion, looks like some people don't even worry about time -- I love seeing people's approaches!
I usually count the time when I am awake during the event, which includes time reading, socializing, or reflecting. For this readathon, I listed my actual reading time but will not use it as a measure of completion.
I usually only keep up with page count/hours of audiobook listened to. I also keep track of breaks for sleep or dinner, etc.
I don't usually track time during Dewey's Readathon, but rather pages. I've been keeping an eye on time a bit more this time due to the time elements in the BINGO. I am only tracking reading time, but I've usually got an audiobook going while reviewing GR.
I only count the reading time - I keep track of it. This year I am trying audiobooks for the first time (because of the Bingo challenge), and although separately, I will be counting that time too.
I count it all because for me #Readathon isn't JUST about the reading, it's about participating in the community and enjoying the environment when my day is focused solely on enjoying books and reading.
I don't really count the reading time. I'm sure it will be way over 8 hours, so I have no need to worry about that part of the bingo. Although, If i tracked it, I would not count this social side in it as it's not reading.
I am not counting minutes other than for the sprints, I think I would be too obsessed with the tracking as I am a detailist. Better for me to just devour as many books as possible until the 24 hours are done 😄
I count any Readathon-based activity as part of it, so things like cheering on other readers, participating in challenges, posting on Goodreads, etc, all count to me.
Only the actual reading time of course.
I mean for my own purposes I do count the time I spend on social media vs taking breaks=sleeping, doing other stuff, but my stopwatch is only for the actual reading time. Which I post at the end of the readathon. That's how I'm used to do it when I do the 24in28 readathon. Social interaction is part of the fun when readathoning, but it doesn't count as reading imo.

I just count the time that I'm awake.I don't think it's possible to actually read and participate for 24 hours during the 24 hour period unless you go overtime...

So I'm curious: When you're counting your time during the readathon, do you count only the minutes you actually spend reading? or do you include the time you spend in the readathon social experience (answering discussion questions, cheering readers on, liking their bookstagrams...)?
For me: I've traditionally only counted the reading. But I wonder if I'm cheating myself of valuable readathon time!
