They also seem to be going the big commercial SciFi route, rather than the social SciFi nature of the novel. Disappointing, honestly. There's a lack of the social SciFi angle in movies.
in the movie trailer we see a men on motorcycles, i guess giving chase to Jonas. We see Jonas going over a very tall waterfall, and we see a love interest. When I heard about the movie i really wanted to see it. But the more i see the trailer the less i am interested.
I am sure the movie will be good. and if considered a completely different story maybe a good movie. BUT it is not the story from the book 'The Giver'.

Personally, I think that the changes are all going to improve the story. The book had so much potential to be amazing. Instead it was just alright. I think there are probably alot of reasons for making Jonas older - it's difficult to find truly talented younger actors, and it would be harder to get the movie made since there are child labor laws.
Also, I don't think the story would appeal to as many people if it was about a kid that age.
Yes, I know Harry Potter was huge, but this is not Harry Potter. Not even close. Percy Jackson was much closer and it barely took off.
As far as alot of the other changes, there's really not much going on in the book. They needed action and tension.
The trailer looked pretty good to me.

There are some significant differences from the book though they manage to play it out well. I don't want to spoil it, but the climax is more of an attention grabber to keep the audience occupied more than the descriptive journey in the book. However, it's a real tearjerker at times. The video clips and pictures of happy memories are beautiful, and the bad ones are just as well done.
The movie was fantastic and is definitely worth seeing. There were some changes, but they weren't enormous and they remained true to the themes and feel of the book. It was a great adaptation, very well executed. Now I am just really hoping they continue and adapt the next 3 books into movies as well!
I read the book like 2 weeks ago and the I watched the trailer, I was so confused about the trailer and the details (especially the kissing scene) that I thought that there must be a second book or something. Yes the movie will be a lot different than the book and it will be typical hollywood and will probably suck for us, who read the book.

Although I am confused and a bit disappointed I will go see the movie.
What did the trailer tell you about the movie?
