Nothing But Reading Challenges discussion

Jack-in-the-box
Christmas has always been a favorite. My grandmother passed away a few years ago and it just hasnt been the same since. Same with Thanksgiving. I LOVE Halloween and all things scary plus having 7 year old boy makes it even more fun with all the activities we do all month long. Its definitely hard to choose just one!
Here's my shelf. I threw some books on there that might work for the first week, just to be ready. I'll take them off before we start officially. Holiday-wheel
Good answers, everyone. I like to think Holidays help break up the everyday routine of the year and give us all something extra special to look forward to.Thanks Stacey, adding your shelf now.
I will work on a Planning Spreadsheet too, which should be up soon, and we can also start coordinating on there.
Hello everybody! My name is Anna and I read mostly fantasy and historical fiction, but I read lots of other genres, too. I am glad to say there are three people in this group who I have participated with in challenges before! I can't wait for the challenge to start.
Thanks for checking in, Anna. Please post your shelf name when you get a chance :) We're happy to have you on board.
Welcome everyone! I love these team challenges and a chance to get to know people and continue to develop friendships with others I've already "met."Erin, I want to make sure you have my shelf because I know I gave it to the MODS when I signed up and I thought I saw it earlier on in this thread but don't see it now. Just checking!
I can access all the Spreadsheets you've posted and I'm excited to start planning!
Question: will you be posting onto the spreadsheets or will we each do our own posts? Also, will we need to do completion posts or will the spreadsheets suffice?
We now have a Books Read Thread -- when we start finishing books once the challenge begins, we can post it there to keep the threads separate and tidier. :)

Haha yeah I get that! We use google sheets at work so I know how glitchy they can be!
Just a note, everyone - they have decided we will not have points for BOM for this challenge since it starts October 27th. I am going to delete the October BOM's in the BOM post I have here and on the planning spreadsheet since this months doesnt qualify. Thanks!

I don't do audible. I just check books out through my library system - it's so great...:)
LOL Well I can certainly relate to slog more then :)And yes I'm loving the library options with ebooks and such.
I love seeing all the holiday comments and I agree with you all. Vicki - I used to agree with you about the older kids, but when a friend pointed out that she would rather see the teenagers trick-or-treating vs. gangbanging it changed my mind. Childhood is over so quickly I can't begrudge them some sweets. The holidays also make the last quarter of the year fly by so quickly. Soon as we know we'll be ringing in another year - 2019! - and one of my absolute favorite holidays is New Year's Eve - parties, new beginnings and resolutions.
Colleen wrote: "I love seeing all the holiday comments and I agree with you all. Vicki - I used to agree with you about the older kids, but when a friend pointed out that she would rather see the teenagers trick-o..."I don't mind teenagers trick-or-treating! I taught high school for 25 years and had a lot of students come to my home. When I said "older ones" I meant older ones! Last year I had two adults come to my door, male and female without ANY children at all! I also had 3 BIG teens (?), young men (?), ring my doorbell after all the kids were gone and I literally couldn't tell if they were teens or adults, three TALL big built males so I didn't open the door. It does scare me if I'm home alone as I often am since my husband works until 11:30 PM, if I can't see their faces and they aren't with a big group of other trick-or-treaters, I play it safe.
I have added my name and 3 books for week one in the planning SS; however, I don't want to be greedy and take spaces others might need. Is that too many to add at one time? And just for clarification, we may also use books that have the word "crow" or "crows" Six of Crows in the title. Would that suffice as the "how it fits" or do we still need the author's name or a character etc.? Do we get extra points for using books with the genre crow?
The other genres listed don't include "crow" so the alternatives are other words we can use if we want? Example: Skeleton Creek
Halloween is my favorite, followed by Christmas, and then Thanksgiving. I love all three though and I try and encourage everyone to have fun with the holidays and not be so stressed out all the time. If it gets to the point where you're not enjoying yourself, you need to take a step back and revalue how your doing things and what you can change to make things not so stressful. I work in grocery and before I went back into the accounting office (my lair or my cave as the kids there call it) I used to work up front. I would talk to my customers who seemed to be barely hanging on to their sanity to try and get them to realize that being as stressed out as they were was not good for them or anyone else.

That is fine on adding the three books. We have a lot of letters to go through.
Yes, you can use books that have crows in the title. We are allowed one bonus for that, so if you read Six of Crows that would fit one bonus. I took one bonus with a crow on the cover. If you use a book for a bonus, it also needs to be used for a spell-it-out letter --- but with a book like Six of Crows, I'm sure there's a character name that would fit.
Yes, the alternative words don't include crow, so we have to actually find that one for the bonus if possible.
Books I've found that have "Crow" listed on the first full page of Genre, which will work for the 50 point bonus, Word as GenreThe Crow
Gifts of the Crow: How Perception, Emotion, and Thought Allow Smart Birds to Behave Like Humans
I'm sure there are more but these two popped up. They have to also fit a letter in Spell It Out.
I believe Hunting Season will also work for genre. I'm not sure if I'm looking in the right place though. Main male characters name is Will so it would work for the spell it out plus its on KU so It would essentially be free. I would be willing to read it if it works.
Jessi wrote: "I believe Hunting Season will also work for genre. I'm not sure if I'm looking in the right place though. Here is the link to show what I mean:

Jessi wrote: "Ok I was looking at the right thing on some other books but maybe I didnt check that one. Oh well."It still works for the spell it out if you want to read it, so it's all good :)
I reserved one spot on the Planning spreadsheet, but others feel free to make some reservations. The reason I didn't do more was I'm not sure how much of my planned list for the month I'll have completed by then since we still have a few weeks. I will start planning a little more the closer we get.

Are we allowed one bonus each or just one bonus from the group? Without reading the book, I don't know all of the characters' names; however, on the MPG it lists characters and one is Wylan so should I move my book to the W space? I don't know what I'm doing yet but I'll figure it out OR count on you. LOL

You can choose which area it goes on the spell-it-out, both character names or title work like you have it. You can always switch it as needed too.
Yes, I’m out to dinner now but will when I get home. When I signed up I gave them my shelf name and asked you in an earlier post if you needed it. Lol I’d have given it to you a long time ago if I’d known you didn’t have it. Sorry!

Hey, Erin, I went on a hunt for my shelf and couldn't find it. LOL I know I had one but I made a new one. It's title is so novel. LOL wheel-a-thon iii

Thanks Vicki, will add it to the spreadsheet now.
Some getting to know you questions:Do you participate in other challenge groups besides than this one?
Do you usually pre-plan the books you are going to read in any way?
Do you read more than one book at a time?
How are you doing on your Goodreads yearly challenge?
What's your favorite reading spot?
Do you like any favorite reading snacks or drinks?
Do you participate in other challenge groups besides than this one?Let's just say an embarrassing number of them! But oh so fun!
Do you usually pre-plan the books you are going to read in any way?
I try but I'm not very good sticking to my plans. I change my mind depending on what I feel like and if my husband will be home or I have to do something I hadn't planned on, etc.
Do you read more than one book at a time?k
I always read more than one at a time with rare exception. Sometimes (like when I just read Heir of Fire) I get so into a book I only read that one.
How are you doing on your Goodreads yearly challenge?
For once I am finished really early! That's because I retired in May 2017 so this year I've had more time to read. I have gone for 200 the past 2-3 years and as of now I'm at 243. :)
What's your favorite reading spot?
Contingent on where I am but literally my very favorite spot is in Hawaii, on the patio, listening to the waves. LOL But that's not a daily thing, SO...I guess I'd have to say on my recliner in the living room where my dog fights my for the leg space. LOL
Do you like any favorite reading snacks or drinks?
I try not to snack when reading but when I do it's raw almonds. My favorite drink is Diet Dr. Pepper but I've gotten away from that for the most part and now I drink mostly water. Oh, and I LOVE going to a restaurant alone when hubs is working and reading while drinking all the coffee I want. LOL
Do you participate in other challenge groups besides than this one?I just joined NBRC back in June so the only other team challenge I've joined is Around the World which is so much fun! I am currently doing several individual challenges though!
Do you usually pre-plan the books you are going to read in any way?
Not typically but I have planned a little bit for Around the World.
Do you read more than one book at a time?
Not usually, I don't seem to have the attention span for it. I am going to try audio books along with regular reading to see if I can do two at once.
How are you doing on your Goodreads yearly challenge?
I set mine low because I didn't know how many I could do. This is the first year in the last seven that I actually can read more. I've hit that low goal already so I've raised my goal.
What's your favorite reading spot?
The couch or my bed
Do you like any favorite reading snacks or drinks?
I try not to but I swear chips and a dr pepper appear like magic more often than not lol
Do you participate in other challenge groups besides than this one?I did a three month challenge at the beginning of the year that was super fun! I am also currently participating in Around the World, which has also been a lot of fun.
Do you usually pre-plan the books you are going to read in any way?
Yes, I definitely do. I usually have a TBR for each month.
Do you read more than one book at a time?
Yes, I do, normally. It doesn't go above two books most of time.
How are you doing on your Goodreads yearly challenge?
At the beginning of the year, I was doing pretty well, being above what I need to be until October. I've been in a reading slump lately, so I haven't been reading as much as I would like to, but I think the book I just finished last night got me out of my slump. I'm going to try to get back up before my school starts again next week.
What's your favorite reading spot
Definitely my bed.
Do you like any favorite reading snacks or drinks?
I don't usually eat when I am reading, but I love drinking hot chocolate or tea.
Erin ☕ *Proud Book Hoarder* wrote: "Thanks for checking in, Anna. Please post your shelf name when you get a chance :) We're happy to have you on board."Here is my shelf! https://www.goodreads.com/review/list...
Do you participate in other challenge groups besides than this one?Yes, I'm currently in 6 other book challenge groups though I plan to cut that number down soon.
Do you usually pre-plan the books you are going to read in any way?
I may pre-plan a little, like a week or so ahead of time, but I'm not too tied to a book if I find another one that works.
Do you read more than one book at a time?
Yes, I read a physical book, a Kindle book, and am sometimes listening to an audio book.
How are you doing on your Goodreads yearly challenge?
I'm 16 books behind. :( Gotta play a lot of catch up.
What's your favorite reading spot?
I can read just about anywhere, but I do love a nice bench under the trees.
Do you like any favorite reading snacks or drinks?
Tea, hot chocolate, candy.
Do you participate in other challenge groups besides than this one? I am in a few different groups, but I haven't been doing as many challenges as I used to.
Do you usually pre-plan the books you are going to read in any way? Not really, that is why I join challenges to help me choose my next read. Sometimes if a book is released that I have wanted to read for a while it will be my next read but that's about it.
Do you read more than one book at a time?
Usually No, I am a bit too OCD for that. I have before, but it gets a little too chaotic.
How are you doing on your Goodreads yearly challenge? I am a little behind right now but I am 187/250 (75%)
What's your favorite reading spot? Mosty my bed or my back step.
Do you like any favorite reading snacks or drinks?
Not really, I usually listen to audiobooks so my hands are usually busy doing something else.
Do you participate in other challenge groups besides than this one?I'm also a member of AMMP, Game Night (although don't participate much in that one), and My Vampire Book Obsession
Do you usually pre-plan the books you are going to read in any way?
I have become very fond of pre-planning by month the past year! I plan the month before, usually by genre or goals. I use a Google Spreadsheet and also have a Goodreads shelf.
Do you read more than one book at a time?
Yes, I've become a serial new book starter and have several going at once.
How are you doing on your Goodreads yearly challenge?
I finished really early this year from my goal of 200
What's your favorite reading spot?
I love hot baths when the weather is nice, or on the porch when the weather is cooler, or in bed with my TV going with an Ambience video through Youtube through my Roku
Do you like any favorite reading snacks or drinks?
I'm not a big snacker when reading but I love different drinks like Lattes and Hot Tea when reading.
Do you participate in other challenge groups besides than this one?I am currently doing the around the world challenge. I also did the Cutthroat challenge. That one was a lot of fun!
Do you usually pre-plan the books you are going to read in any way?
The only thing I try to do is work in any library requests that may arrive during a challenge, as well as any books I've won.
Do you read more than one book at a time?
I prefer not to but I find myself doing so often!
How are you doing on your Goodreads yearly challenge?
I'm 4 books ahead right now. I only put myself down for 75 books though!
What's your favorite reading spot?
I have a little library that has a couch underneath a picture window. I have a bird feeder right outside the window so I get to see plenty of birds (and squirrels, deer, turkeys, and an occasional groundhog).
Do you like any favorite reading snacks or drinks?
Nope. I wouldn't want to get anything on my books lol!

I used to do the restaurant thing myself every once in awhile when I lived in my apartment. I've been tempted to do this sort of thing again. We have coffee shops here a-plenty, but none that close to make reading spots convenient.

Yeah, I have many restaurants within 5 miles of me. One is at the end of my street and my granddaughter works there. It's called Chubby's. LOL It's like a 50's diner.

Thanksgiving is next because it’s family getting together and thinking about and sharing what we’re thankful for. Usually there’s a new addition to the family, someone got a job, someone’s health improved, etc. and we always focus on the people in our lives rather than the things. It’s hard now with both my parents no longer alive because we all miss Dad so much as he always said the blessing for us and led the “what are you thankful for this year?” discussion. But he gave us the tradition and we still honor it.
Halloween? Not so much for me other than going to the church activities to watch my grandkids have fun and get treats. All the masks and not knowing who is behind them scares me. Too many creepy in this world, BUT if it’s little ones dressed up and ringing my doorbell I love it! Just wish the older ones wouldn’t come to my door.
