Hey Friends, I'm terrible at buddy reads so won't participate so as not to offend people with my often unusual opinions, but was just curious as to what chunksters were on the horizon. I'm reading M.M.Kaye's "Far Pavilions" right now: I don't think it was ever regarded as a great literary work, but the story, and the world portrayed, is indeed fascinating.
My next chunkster is Volume 6 of Knausgard's "My Struggle", then next year it's an "all-foreign-language-translation' year for me, as I need some literary expansion. Might start work on a doctorate in World Literature.
I would love to read a couple of older classics that I wanted to read for a long time like The Odyssey or The Canterbury Tales. I have read parts of The Canterbury Tales in school years ago, but have never gone back to finish it; and I have wanted to read The Odyssey for a long time because I know that it was a inspiration for many writers. I am curious to find out how the same book could be an inspiration for me.
I’m starting Don Quixote and reading cryptonomicon here. I read miss Macintosh my darling this past year and it is insane but wonderful! Hi Greg! My struggle is on my shortlist to read also.
Don Quixote was a most excellent read! In fact, it was one of the very early books I read with this group. Good times. :)
I loved Sea of Poppies when we read it last year and plan to read the next book in the trilogy before the end of the year.
This year is still looking brutal workwise but lightens up after the holidays :) should we plan on a poll?
I am new to this group. My name is Kathleen and I live in Vermont I am a retired nurse and very interested in the big chunky classics. I have most experience with Dickens and Russian literature from my time at Vassar as a literature major. On my table are Angle of Repose by Wallace Stegner, Bleak House,,Or any other Charles Dickens, and War and Peace. I have never been able to finish W and P mostly because I get bogged down in the historical details. I would like to consider reading it as a buddy read if I can or if not with the group or by myself. I also love Jane Eyre and I will happily read that. And Middlemarch is on my list.
What is the Christmas book that you want to read? Is there a special book that you choose every year for December? I’m new to this group so please fill me in. Thank you so glad to be here I’m still figuring out how to manage the notes in all that ❤️. Kathleen

A poll for our next Classic chunkster is a good idea. Jane Eyre was one of my first classics when I got back into reading and set about to read books that I "should have read". I loved it at the time and would be interested in a reread. I would be up for other books as well, though.
I want to read The Witching Hour even though I heard the third book isn't that good, I'm going to read it anyway.

I'm taking a long train trip the second half of Sept. and W&P is one of the chunksters I plan to take along.
I'm going to set up a nomination thread for after Cryptonomicon - I'll take the first five seconded books for a poll, and I'm going to leave it open to any chunkster. I'll start it now so we can get our books ahead of when the current book finishes. Luckily we staffed up at work so I can re-join reads again!
I've just noticed that the group read is Cryptonomicon - shame I missed it! Maybe I'll start reading it shortly and just post on the sections as and when! I haven't really thought about my chunkster reads this year - they always just sort of happen...
