trim

/trɪm/

verb: make (something) neat or of the required size or form by cutting away irregular or unwanted parts.

noun: an act of cutting something in order to neaten it.

∞ ∞ ∞ ∞ ∞ ∞ ∞ ∞ ∞ ∞ ∞ ∞ ∞ ∞ ∞ ∞ ∞ ∞ ∞ ∞ ∞ ∞ ∞ ∞ ∞ ∞ ∞ ∞ ∞ ∞ ∞ ∞ ∞ ∞ ∞ ∞

A regular bookshelf has 4 sides so we are going to "trim" its 4 "sides" (ie. 4 different ways).

1. How many?!?!
Look at the total number of your TBR, take the last digit and read that many books off your TBR. If you have a "0", read 10 books.
Try to read what's already on your TBR prior to starting this challenge. You may concentrate on a certain TBR shelf if you have a number of TBR shelves.

2. Popularity
Sort your TBR by "number of ratings" and read:
a. Books with the highest number of ratings
b. Books with the least number of ratings
Try to read the same number of books (a+b) as you did for (1) above, if not more.

3. Monstrosity
Read 1 (one) of the 5 thickest books on your TBR.
Yes, the biggest book and just the One. If the thickest is 1,000+ pages but the 5th thickest is only 300+ pages, DO choose the book closest to 1,000+ pages

4. Catch Up
Read that last book in the series!
Or at least, catch up to the latest instalment.
You must have read at least the first book before September 2018. Again, try to read the same number of book you read for (1), if not more.

Tien, just to be clear. For "Catch Up," I see you've listed Scarlet. But it's #2 in a series of 4. Does that mean Clairel would count, even though it's only #4 in a series of 5? So ANY additional book in a series is ok? I thought it had to be the last, or the last published so far. If it's any book in a series other than the first one, then almost anything we're reading for the Something Serial game would work, right?

And if that's not right, then do you have any hints for how to figure out what is that LAST book when scrolling through our TBRs?

Oh. That's a good question. I thought we needed to read the next in the series, starting from whichever point we were in the series (i.e. I've only read 1 book of series XYZ, so off to #2 even if the series has 4 books, etc.) - but, come to think of it, the instruction is worded differently than what I thought.

Also, I don't read many series at all, so this one is really tricky for me (that's why I listed the fifth book in the Edgar Allan Poe 5 volume collection, because I really only have less than a handful of series going...)

Re. #2: I just could not get myself to pick the very highest rated book (Jurassic Park), so I went with the second and third ones.

Robin A 1. How many?!?! 5 books
Look at the total number of your TBR, take the last digit and read that many books off your TBR. If you have a "0", read 10 books.
The last number is 8. I currently 4 books behind on my year goal so this may be difficult, but now that August is over and hopefully a few good books this should be doable.
2. Popularity
Sort your TBR by "number of ratings" and read:
a. Books with the highest number of ratings
b. Books with the least number of ratings
Try to read the same number of books (a+b) as you did for (1) above, if not more. will try to split my reading and do 4 each

3. Monstrosity
Read 1 (one) of the 5 thickest books on your TBR.
Yes, the biggest book and just the One. If the thickest is 1,000+ pages but the 5th thickest is only 300+ pages, DO choose the book closest to 1,000+ pages. I will look more into this.

4. Catch Up
Read that last book in the series!
Or at least, catch up to the latest instalment.
You must have read at least the first book before September 2018. Again, try to read the same number of book you read for (1), if not more.
There are at least two books I can read to finish up two different series.

3. Monstrosity

Or at least, catch up to the latest instalment.
You must have read at least the first book before September 2018. Again, try to read the same number of book you read for (1), if not more.

Ok, I'm pretty sure I've linked everyone up in post #2. Please let me know if I've missed you.

Clarification re: Catch Up
It doesn't have to be the latest book published in the series. If you've started reading the series (whether it be book #1 or any other book in the series as long as you've read a book in the series) before September, any other book in the series can be used for this task.

@LynnB: This was rather spontaneous so for this challenge, yes, you may backdate to 1 Sep

@Carrie: You may use that book for either Monstrosity or Catch Up; your choice.

Go to My Books page. At the top, on the right-hand side, you will see Settings. Click on that and choose what you want visible on your My Books page. Be sure to save the setting.

Are there page limitations? For example, I just discovered there's a 32-page ebook in a series I love and thought I had finished: Lawful Interception, in the Little Brother series.

It sort of feels like cheating. But since my Monstrosity choices are in the 750-900+ range, maybe not.
