This is Pritkin's POV of the Dory/Pritkin novella.

From FB. If you click on the link, you can see the cover.

Pritkin has a nice part to play in "Dragon's Claw", the new Dory novella. As some of you know, I've been doing Dory stories for a while, and I usually have an alternate POV in each of them (Marlowe in "Zombie's Bite" and Mircea in "Lover's Knot"). I planned for Pritkin to be the alternate POV in DC, but his story just grew and grew. I checked with my publishing company just to be sure, and they said that any novellas I publish have to come in under 60,000 words (which is why DC is 59,690). And that was just Dory's side of things. I didn't have room to squeeze Pritkin's POV in and do it justice, so I decided to do a separate novella for him. He and Dory do cross paths, but they're working on separate parts of a big problem, so most of his stuff you won't have seen before. It'll be out Dec. 1.

With two novellas (basically comprising a full-length book), Ms. Chance will finally be paid properly for the great writing and immense amount time she spends on these used-to-be-freebies. It just wasn't fair for her to receive nothing for the shorts, when they were so gloriously entertaining and well written.

These two novellas will have widened and advanced the plotlines as well as endearing the characters even more to us who follow their adventures with delight (and sometimes alarm).

I hope that some day there will be a giant compilation of all her short stories and novellas. I so would so buy, buy, buy! that book and treasure it for the depth of character development it would give to all the players on KC's stage.

She is a great author, and I hope more people learn to love her writing.

Fun news! I just heard that Tantor, the group that does the audiobooks for the Cassie and Dory series, is considering recording "Dragon's Claw" and "Siren's Song"! I'll be really happy if this turns out to be the case, because some people asked for the audio, but having even a novella recorded is very expensive. Especially since "Dragon's Claw" is half the length of a book! I couldn't afford to do it, but it looks like it might work out anyway. I'll let you know more when I hear for certain.

Hi guys,

"Siren's Song", the twin novella to "Dragon's Claw", is not going to be out on Dec. 1 as I'd hoped. I have about half of it done, but had to put it aside to finish up the ninth Cassie book, Brave the Tempest. BTT is going well and will be turned in this month, but that means I won't be starting SS again until probably around the time it was due out. I'm sorry about this, but Brave the Tempest is a great book and it deserved the time to be all it can be. This is to let you know that I will be finishing up SS just as soon as I turn in BTT, so I am still hoping to have it out in December. But it's not going to be on the 1st of the month, and I wanted to let you know ahead of time. Thanks for your patience--I promise that it will be worth it!

Hello, everyone. I've just read the sample chapters, and I didn't see anything that we didn't know before. Did I miss something?

There were so many fascinating expansions of the entire structure of the Cassieverse and so many intriguing developments in Dory/Dorina's powers and relationships in Dragon's Claw that I expected as much from Siren's Song about Pritkin's abilities.

Oh well, we will soon know more about Pritkin's powers "apres the deed," as Oona says. Can't wait! 😄

Karen (nzlkat) | 1731 comments Do we know what he was ‘recovering’ from, as I’m not quite 100% sure where in the time line it is from the Cassie side of things - does his story start a bit before Dory’s - or at same time?? Think I need to do another re-read of the later books at least :)

I think Dory's timeline begins the next day (or night) after Dorina tried to kill Cassie while battling the demon-possessed baby vamp.

If so, Pritkin's storyline must begin a week or so before that. Remember the three-to-four-day-old beard he saw in the mirror?

You are probably right, Anne. Caleb did baby-sit him, and he might have needed Tami's help. This must have been after Rian(sp?) left to escort the wraith-like Rosier back to his domain to recover.

Rosier had recovered to a very imperfect physical state by the time the demon council convened at the Consul's estate when Dorina attacked Cassie and battled the baby vamp who was protecting Cassie.

I think Brave the Tempest must be a fair bit after DC and SS, because Cassie seems on decent terms with Mircea, and she was furious with him at the end of Ride the Storm.

Whew, this was a very long way to say that I agree with you, Anne.

At least my reasoning is out there, and it won't bother me in the least if someone else finds some reason I'm wrong. As I said in the BtT topic: I've been wrong before, and by golly, I can do it again!

message 14: by Anne (new)

Anne | 20 comments Nancy, it's because his mind seems to be skipping forward through his timeline back to the present, and his power is acting like a new mage not used to his/her power - and I can't think of any other reason that would happen. Can't wait for the full story!

message 15: by Nancy (new)

Nancy | 493 comments Mod
Of course you are right, Anne. It is so simple when you think about it.

Oh, well. That is what Goodreads is for- - -to help keep track of complicated timelines and relationships.

Fear not. I will persevere with crazy theories until Siren's Son, Brave the Tempest, and wherever Ms Chance's wild imagination takes us to correct any of our speculations.

message 16: by Cameo (new)

Cameo | 1045 comments Mod
Poor Pritkins brain, can't be easy suddenly having to relive a couple of centuries worth of memories and determine which ones are old ones and which ones are new. And the babysitting probably has to do with his powerswap with Cassie, his magic power must have increased considerably, and because he's never done that powerswap thing before, he doesn't know how to control his newly gained strength - hence the fireball-throwing-in-his-sleep.

But it's always interesting to dwelve into Pritkins backstory, and I for one, really hope he starts keeping the beard, or at least some gruff - in my head, it looks amazing on him LOL.

I only hope Mircea doesn't catch up with him before he gets a handle on things... that could be very... interesting.

message 17: by Nancy (new)

Nancy | 493 comments Mod
I agree that it does seem that Pritken was slipping forward through his memories and dealing with his enhanced powers.

Wonder why he missed his wife's traumatic death, though? We/he saw only the devastated aftermath.

No sense worrying - - - he told Cassie that he remembered EVERYTHING!

I REALLY need Sirens Song. Can you tell?

message 18: by Nancy (new)

Nancy | 493 comments Mod
I am still hoping that Siren's Song comes out before Brave the Tempest. It's supposed to happen in the timeline before BtT, isn't it?

Ms Chance said that SS was half way complete on Jan. 9th. We should have it any day now!!!

Seriously, just when I think the characters and the Cassieverse are complete, Karen adds whole new dimensions, villains, and changing relationships. Then, she begins even more crossovers between the two series! Her wild imagination astounds me. The books just get better and better, and I am enthralled.

Can't wait!

One last niggling point- - - In all the descriptions of Pritkin's weaponry, his potion belt is always mentioned. The vials are always "cork-topped" vials.

I would think that the dangerous, corrosive contents would eat through the cork toppers.

Maybe Pritkin will explain the corks during some battle sequence in Sirens Song.

message 20: by Scarlet (new)

Scarlet Heavens | 361 comments I will read the sample chapters again, but I rushed through them because I was looking for one thing:
Pritkin shifting.

Because I think that's what happened. Pritkin unconsciously shifted and woke up at HQ.

“Damn it, John! You’re supposed to be in bed!” Caleb echoed his thoughts again, in what he fondly believed to be a whisper.
“I’m aware of that—”
A meaty hand grabbed his shoulder. “Then what the devil are you doing here?”
“I don’t know.”
“You don’t know?”

But then later,

“Fey spells?” John looked up at his friend. “Then I’ve . . . done this before?”
“’This’ meaning walk across town in your bare feet while apparently zonked out of your mind? Or ‘this’ as in try to burn down the hotel? Which this are we focusing on here?”
John contemplated that for a moment. At least it explained why his feet were cut and bruised and filthy.

Caleb assumes that Pritkin walked, and so does Pritkin, but Rosier and the other demons have said quite often that when incubi feed, they don't just exchange energy, they also exchange powers. I think Pritkin will get some of the Pythia's powers because when he and Cassie had demon sex in Ride the Storm, he fed off of the Pythian power.

message 21: by Nancy (new)

Nancy | 493 comments Mod
Hi, Scarlet.

I think you're right that Pritkin (Oh, I just want to call him Merlin now!) gained part of Carrie's powers when they had demon sex. It will be interesting to see if a personal power of Carrie's leaks over - - - - the power to see and communicate with ghosts. Billy Joe may be in for a surprise the next time he snarks about Pritkin!

I know it seemed that he pulled from the Pythian power, but he could have pulled a little bit from Cassie herself. That was a MAJOR exchange there.

I don't know if anyone follows the Tumblr blogs, but they are having a re-read of the Cassie books prior to the release of Brave the Tempest. If you don't mind the virulent Mircea bashing, they're lots of fun and, often, quite perceptive.

message 22: by Claire (new)

Claire (claire1) | 4451 comments Finally got around to reading the sample chapters and now I'm so much more excited for Siren's Song. Thought it was a bit hard to follow at times, I agree with you guys-- it seems like Pritkin has definitely inherited some of Cassie's powers.

I think it's interesting that Pritkin had that vivid "dream" about Caleb and the Cornwall incident that apparently didn't happen. I wonder if he's seeing an alternate timeline? Or maybe someone tampered with his memory?

I think I need to re-read the last Cassie book. I absolutely sped through it on the day it came out and now I have trouble remembering what happened!

@Nancy ahhh I didn't realize there was a re-read happening! Who should I follow to keep up?

message 23: by Nancy (new)

Nancy | 493 comments Mod
Hi, Claire!

There are others, but their names/blogs show up on Dante's. They will soon be starting on the second book, but they're very relaxed about keeping to book topic. If you want to talk about book one even after they are on to another, that's fine.

They even plan to discuss the Dory books and all the shorts, I think.

message 24: by Scarlet (new)

Scarlet Heavens | 361 comments @Nancy: I love how it wasn't just Pritkin who was Merlin, but Rosier as well. And I kinda love that this makes Pritkin both a prince of the incubi and the green fey as well, that has got to come into importance at some point.
And I would love it if he could see Billy now! That would be an awesome development. I agree, I'm sure that Pritkin got some of Cassie's personal powers too.
And Cassie must have gotten some of Pritkin's powers, right?
Cassie's powers are such a mystery to me, because she has no idea what she can actually do. Pritkin was physically training her up to now, so that she could increase her strength and stamina and channel more of the Pythia's power because it's her strongest weapon. And while I'm worried that Cassie got addicted to the Tears (hope not), I can't wait to maybe see Pritkin training Cassie in using magic (maybe some of the witches as well).

@Claire: I honestly have no idea what was the Cornwall incident. I guess I am also in for a re-read, especially the SS excerpt, since I blew through it looking for Pritkin shifting. I gotta admit, KC is an amazing writer, but it's often too much show and so little tell that I get extremely lost when I read. Still, that's what makes every re-read worth it for me.

I also could not find Dantes-hotel-and-casino@tumblr.com when I tried, but then again, I don't use tumblr.

Sorry, Scarlet

I'm not very good with Tumblr either. The URL is all lower case, though. Try it without the capital D. I hope it works for you, because the people who post are interesting.

Good luck!

message 26: by Claire (new)

Claire (claire1) | 4451 comments hey guys! the format for the URL to a tumblr blog is .tumblr.com

so it's

that should work!

I decided to start re-reading Shadow's Bane in the airport last night and I honestly can't wait for Dory and Pritkin to get to know each other better. They have a lot in common, both being rare hybrids distrusted in their respective communities.

I agree sometimes KC's work can get overwhelming because I get so caught up in the descriptions of the action that I forget what's happening.

Also we know that demon energy exchanges always result in a power swap unless one side is too weak to donate. Cassie, with that giant well of Pythian power to draw on, definitely wasn't too weak. so Prikin got some of her energy. The question is: did that energy come with the ability to time shift?

KC's life must be tumultuous right now. I understand that, I REALLY do, but I still want Siren's Song so badly! I need to know Pritkin's own thoughts, I need more interaction between Dory/Dorina and Pritkin, and I need to know what is happening on the Faery invasion front.

Even more, I would like to hear how KC envisions carrying on with self-publishing. I hope she tells us how many more books are needed for each of her series, especially Mircea's. Dory's little comment that she had heard th Mircea's and Ming-de's first meeting was memorable really intrigued me. I think Ming-de and her mind control abilities will surely become much more important to the war effort, whether that will be for good or ill.......I don't know!!

Ming-de's been touted as super-powerful, but she has been shown to us as jealously spiteful toward Cassie and a loser in vampire politics. Overall, she's been of minimal importance in the plot lines.

I think that's gonna change!!!!!

Note: This comment is about the Siren's Song preview, not from the recent snippet.

Pritkin said the dream he had about a very young Caleb Carter and the Cornwall lair of a monster who was killing sheep (and also the mages sent to capture the creature), was not what had happened after Jonas roused him out of his despair following his killing his wife in demon sex. As the dream ended, the howling monster was lunging to attack them.

After the "dream" sequence, Pritkin was jolted to find he was in war mage headquarters with middle-aged Caleb wondering about the weird dream he had had about Caleb and the Cornwall incident which he believed had not happened.

Now, we need to revisit Dragon's Claw, where Dory is shattered by fleeting memories after clasping the Irin's hand covered with pulp from the Dragon's Claw plant. Dory had a memory of Ray's as he escaped from rock-throwing tormentors as a youngster. Another memory she experienced seemed to be from Pritkin about the Cornwall incident.

Dory's having experienced Pritkin's MEMORY from Cornwall indicates it wasn't a weird dream. It had actually happened, and Pritkin seems not to have remembered it.

I guess we need to see if anything further happens concerning the 'Cornwall Incident' when the full text of Siren's Song is published.

Karen Chance is skilled about leaving clues, (Easter eggs, as she calls them) that hint at future plot developments. That makes me wonder about how the Cornwall Incident will affect future plot lines.

Dragon's Claw had such an expansion of the Cassieverse with supernatural Hong Kong, trumpet vampires, vampire killing bullets that render them human, and involvement in Ming-de's territory, that I have great hope for more revelations from Siren's Song.

You know, I think Penguin dropped publishing Karen's books just when great(er) books are beginning to happen!!! Jerks!!!

It's weird in BtT that Cassie references Pritkin's having been in Hong Kong, but knows only that he left his 'deathbed' to be there.

When we next see him, he's calmly participating in a s'morefest celebration with Cassie's gang at Dante's.

I thought the publish date for Siren's Song might have been delayed because it had spoiler information on some plot aspect of BtT, but that doesn't seem to be true.

I think I will just go quietly off the rails and around the bend if we don't have Siren's Song before Shatter the Earth in December (assuming KS meets her announced publish date).

message 41: by Scarlet (new)

Scarlet Heavens | 361 comments I honestly wouldn't mind getting SS later, as long as we really do get Shatter by December.

I agree that KC has been overly optimistic about her publishing dates previously, but I'm hoping that now that she's self-publishing, she won't have to wait for her "slot" in the publishing schedule (I have also read at Ilona Andrews' blog that sometimes a book will be finished and wait for months for its slot in publication, because publishers don't want to have too many books in the same genre coming out at the same time).

message 42: by Nancy (new)

Nancy | 493 comments Mod
I'm still hoping for Siren's Song before Shatter the Earth. The novella was half finished back in January.

We know that KC is working on Shatter the Earth, Siren's Song, and a Lia de Croisetts book. In addition, she seems to be prepping for a Cassie convention in conjunction with the Archon convention in St, Louis in October. She has also mentioned being on a panel during the fantasy convention in Anaheim in April of 2020.

Out of everything I've mentioned, it seems that Siren's Song is closest to completion, so I'm rooting for SS any day now.

It was a shock to hear Cassie remembering Pritkin's absences in Brave the Tempest, but knowing nothing of what he was doing in Hong Kong or at the Consul's estate in New York.

It is so limiting to know only what Cassie knows or assumes about other people and events that are happening around her. She can be so involved in her personal dramas and time traveling incidents that she is only vaguely aware that other characters are involved in dangerous, highly important action involving other aspects of the war.

It would be very helpful if she could learn Agnes' trick of returning from a time traveling jaunt at exactly the same time she left. She would not lose out on so much that is happening to important people in her life.

* sigh* Sorry to belabor the point, but I NEED Siren's Song before It recedes so far back from current events in the war that it seems unimportant or even irrelevant to current events. *sigh again*

Karen says it is the length of a book, not just a novella. I'm just so excited for this insight into Pritkin's thoughts and hopes.

What are your expectations for plot developments on the Faery invasion? Cassie reminded Mircea in Paris that Pritkin must be kept alive. She mused to herself that both Mircea and Pritkin would combine to make history, some of it hers.
