Ellen | 2315 comments As Napoleon III ordered the razing of hundreds of homes in 1800's Paris, the owners were understandably saddened to see their houses flattened for the sole purpose of building fancy, broad boulevards. Rose Bazelet decided that she would not give up without a fight and, even as the sounds of destruction loom ever closer, she hid herself in the basement of her beloved home. There she wrote letters to her late husband Armand recounting their lives together and a deeply buried secret that she had never spoken aloud to anyone.

This was a very sweet story and it was quite lovely on audio. All of those pretty French names would have been totally skewed in my mind but they flowed off the reader's tongue with ease. It is a fairly short read with an ending that is certainly foreshadowed throughout, but even then there is a little surprise.

Joi (missjoious) | 3834 comments I really enjoyed Sarah's Key- but it was so freaking depressing. This sounds much lighter.

I loved Sarah's Key and can't wait for the Rain Watcher. Good review.
