Please comment here on Laughing Boy by Oliver La Farge, pages 1 - 98.

Mary (maryingilbert) | 70 comments I was struggling with the first few chapters; even though it's a quick read, I found the prose boring. That changed when I got to the chapter narrated by Slim Girl -- very interesting, now I'm hooked and want to find out her history.

I agree with you about the prose. Yes, the story really becomes interesting once Slim Girl is introduced. The story becomes very interesting in learning about the Navajo way of life back then and what happens to the two main characters. Certainly a plot driven novel for me.

Julia Jones | 11 comments It was interesting to read about the Navajo way of life, especially the dances, and the family structure. I also found the depiction of the dynamic between the Navajo and the Americans thought provoking. The low-class, cast-off Navajo who had been tainted by American culture, or drink. Sad that this was a reality (and still is?) for many.
