Prologue – October 1941 - there were some girls burying the body of some man. I think one of them was married to him.

Brooke is a lawyer in Georgia. She has her own practice. She gets a call from Josephine Bettendorf Warrick, an eccentric old lady that owns Talisa island. Brooke had been there once on a camping trip as a Girl Scout and it didn’t end well. She was asked to meet her the following day on the island. She took a ferry and learned more about Josephine on the trip.

Josephine wanted Brooke to help her preserver her land. The state is trying to get their hands on it and build cabins and conference centers. They plan to tear down the house and Josephine doesn’t want that to happen. She is old and sick and they are just waiting for her to die. She wants to put the land and the house in a trust and leave it to her oldest friends, the High Tide Club.
Josephine – April, 1932 – The High Tide Club started in 1932 when Josephine and her two friends Ruth and Millie got to the island before everyone else. They were 12 & 13. Ruth took out the old car and drove them to Mermaid beach where they went skinny dipping.

Josephine wanted Brooke to find her friends. Ruth and Millie may be dead but Varina who is younger may be alive. It turns out that Josephine knows a lot about Brooke and her family, how her parents were divorced and how it devastated her mother and about her son and that she was a single mother. Millie was her grandmother on her mother’s side. Josephine was to be a bridesmaid to Millie’s marriage to Russell but Millie ended up marrying Henry years later and Josephine wasn’t there but Ruth was. Josephine remember back to 1941 at Millie’s engagement party. How drunk Russell was an how he was ignoring Millie until she danced with Gardiner, Josephine’s brother. (Was Russell who they buried in the prologue???) She hasn’t seen Ruth since a fallout in `72 over the presidential election.

Varina, the other member of the High Tide Club was younger, she was only 14 (in 1941). The last Josephine heard from her she was living with a grand-niece who wanted her to deed the Oyster Cove land back to the tenants. Josephine says no and was highly insulted that her niece would ask that of her. Josephine’s plan is that Brooke get Ruth children, Varina and her mother together and have them meet her on the island. Then she wants Brooke to write up a trust that would leave the island to them. At this point Brooke put her foot down, she would contact the people and aske them to come to the island but it would be a conflict of interest for her to write up the trust in which she could profit, if part of the island goes to her mother. She left the island.

Brooke didn’t cash the check from Josephine but she thought about it because she was going to have to borrow money from her mom to pay her bills. However, she did look up Ruth. She found that she died in 2006 and had a son who had been arrested several times in Florida and a daughter who had died in the 1960s. She also had a granddaughter in LA. Brooke contacted her via Facebook but the girl didn’t believe her.
October 1941 – Millie was dancing with Gardiner at her engagement party. Russell broken them up and took Millie out to the veranda where was in the process of raping her when Gardiner showed up. He put a stop to it by asking Millie to go back to the party. Russell was not happy about this and started a fight with Gardiner.
Brooke decided to call her mom while Henry was eating breakfast. She told her what was going on with Josephine. Her mother thought it was pretty strange. She met Josephine once and remembers Ruth and Varina. She had to cut the call short to take care of Henry.

Farah bribed a deadbeat to pay his bill. Brooke was going to spend the day looking for Varina and who should show up in her office, Varina and her niece Felicity.
October 1941 – Varina remembers Millie’s engagement party. She got all dressed up in the dress Josephine gave her and the shoes Ruth gave her. Millie gave her a pearl pin. She then went down to work. After her work was complete, she put her princess outfit one and was going to go home. She wanted to see the party and heard Millie struggling with Russell, then she saw Gardiner step in. Millie went inside and she saw the fight between Gardiner and Russell. After Gardiner left, she figured she could leave her hiding stop. Russell saw her, accused her of being a thief and then decided they would have their own party. He dragged her off with him.
Brooke told Varina and Felicity that Josephine was dying and had a change of heart and wants to sign over Oyster Bluff to the families that are living there. Varina knew that Josephine would do right by them. When Varina went off the bathroom, Felicity bragged on Varina and her achievements.

Brooke decided that if she was going to take Josephine as a client, she would have to learn about condemnation law. The only person she could think of to help her was her old boss. She thought about the way she left her previous job and wasn’t sure how he would react. Gabe Wynant was happy to get her call and was hoping she wanted to come back. She briefly told him what she wanted and he agreed to meet her that weekend if she get away. She said she had to find a baby sitter – he was surprised she had a baby.
Marie, Brooke’s mom came to visit. She finally broke down and told her about Henry’s father. His name was Pete and she knew him from school and saw him again a couple of weeks before her wedding. When she ran out on the wedding, her family and friends, she ran to Pete. He didn’t want to be her rebound guy but things just happened. He got a grant to spend 3 years in Alaska. He left and 6 weeks later, she found out she was pregnant. She never told him because she didn’t want to give up his grant.

October 1941 – Josephine went to Millie’s door the next day at about noon asking if she was ever going to get up. They decided to have a meeting of the High Tide Club as there was a full moon that night. They decided to go get Varina and initiate her into the club. When they got to the beach, Ruth and Josephine stripped down and went swimming. Millie said she would stay with Varina. When they got out of the water, they told Millie she had to go in and starting taking her scarf and long sleeves off and found her filled with bruises. Josephine asked if Russell did that and then vowed to kill him.
Brooke went to meet her old boss. He gave her some ideas of how to fight the state. She asked him if he would be willing to do the trust part of the business since it was a conflict of interest for her to do it. He agreed.

Brooke went back to the island to meet with Josephine. She looked much better and had more energy but it was the new medication and she was getting more tumors. They too k a ride around the island so Josephine could show Brooke around. By the time they got back to the house, Josephine was tired and weak again. The talked about the estate. She wanted to meet Gabe next Wednesday when was the next time Brooke came. She also wanted to meet the women to inherit. They talked about fighting the state’s attempt at getting the island and how Brooke wanted Josephine to write some letter and make phone calls to political types she may know. She told of Lizzy wanting Josephine to pay her way to come. She got things together and they were going to meet that Friday. Her mother was the hardest sell.

Brook brought Gabe to Talisa island. She introduced him to the people and Josephine got all decked out for her “gentleman caller”. They talked for a while but as they got down to business about her will, Brooke dismissed herself. She talked to Lynetta and found out if the people from the list Farrah got where still alive and if so, were they still around. After a while, Gabe came in and said her highness had gone up for a rest and they had been dismissed.
Back on the mainland, Brooke took Gabe to a seafood dive where she was treated like royalty. She told him about Pete (baby daddy). She asked about his talk with Josephine but he couldn’t talk about it, Josephine was insistent.

Brooke and Marie (her mom) met Lizzie at the airport. She brought her cat with her. Lizzie talked about her grandma (Ruth) and Marie talked about her mom (Millie). Ruth kept everything, Millie didn’t keep anything. Lizzy brought out pictures of Ruth, Josephine and Millie. Lizzie mentioned an unsolved murder that happened on the island. The man was Russell Strickland. He was on the island at his engagement party to Mildred Everhart.
October,1 941 – Out on the beach, the had discovered Millie’s bruises. She said he didn’t rape her that time, Gardiner stopped him. She had bruises on her writes, neck and thighs. She started drinking and then Varina who had never drank started drinking. Both Millie and Varina stripped down and went skinny dipping. Varina ate and sandwich and then threw up. It started to rain. They went to spend the night at the lighthouse as they couldn’t bring Varina home to her tee-tottering preacher father.

Ch 27 - Marie was surprised to find out her mother has been engaged prior to her pops. They go Lizzy to her hotel to find out that they wouldn't allow the cat. They went to the island. On the way over, C.D. told them that not only were Varina and Felicity were there but so was Gabe - this was his 3rd trip of the day. After about 20 minutes and just when they could see the island, the motor gave out. C.D. had to row. About 100 yards from the shore the winds changed, he had to walk them in. Louette had been waiting for them almost an hour. She seemed upset and said that Josephine wasn't doing well.

Ch 28 - Louette brought the ladies to the house. Lizzy let the down he she took off. Lizzy and Marie went after it. Brooke notice Louette didn't look right, Louette said Josephine fired her for calling the doctor without her permission. Brooke went and yelled at Josephine for being so mean to Louette and threatened to quit. Josephine said she didn't mean it - Brooke made her apologize. Brooke said they needed to get down to business as she had to relieve the babysitter by 6 and it was already 3. They didn't know how she would get back - the last ferry left at 6:30.

Ch 29 - Josephine started talking to everyone about why they were there. Lizzie and Felicity kept interrupting her ( what is it about that generation). Lizzie asked about that missing guy Russell Strickland and Felicity kept making racial comments. Josephine told the story up until when Russell pulled Millie out after she was dancing with Gardiner.

Ch 30 – It was announced that there was a bad water pump on the boat and they couldn’t get the part until the next day. The ferry back was booked and there was no way back. Gabe and Brooke had to make calls to for Gabe’s appointment the following morning and for a baby sitter for henry. They broke up and got ready for dinner. After dinner Lizzie asked Josephine to continue her story about Russell. She said she didn’t see what happened next, but Varina said she did and continues. She told about Millie almost getting raped and how Gardiner coming in a saving her and he told Russell to be off the island by morning or he would kill him. Then they got off topic about Gardiner and the war. With the drinks at dinner and her medicine, Josephine was wiped out.

Josephine continued the story. She told about the next day and them picking up Varina and have a High Tide Club meeting. She told about Millie’s bruises, the drinking and the staying the night at the lighthouse. The next morning, they wanted to get Varina home for church and saw buzzards feasting on Russell’s body. They decided to get rid of the body. Gabe was distressed that they never reported it. They didn’t say who shot him but it was established that all of them could shoot, ever Varina.
October 1941 – Later that day, Josephine and Varina’s fathers were looking for Russell. His room was undisturbed, only his shotgun was missing. The girls were upstairs and that is when Millie gave them the stickpins. Varina got one because although she wasn’t a bridesmaid, she was one of them now after skinny dipping and helping to bury Russel.
Josephine said the body was never found. Little fuss was made over Russell as his parents were dead and he lived with his grandparents. The sheriff didn’t take kindly to people from Boston messing in his town. Josephine went to bed.
Louetta woke Brooke the next morning. Josephine had fallen in the bathroom downstairs and was dead. Louetta blamed herself for letting Josephine mix wine with her pills. Brooke, told Louetta to make a big pot of coffee and she was going to call the sheriff.

While Louette went to tell Shug, Brooke called the Sheriff. He was going to get the coroner and head over to the island. She then called Farrah and Henry. Then Gabe woke up, she told him and he took some pictures of the body. He then informed her that although was written up, they hadn’t gotten witnesses signatures. It was going to be a mess.
When everyone else woke up, Brooke broke the new to them that Josephine was dead. Gabe broke the news that the new will had not been signed as they didn’t have uninvolved witnesses. He will try be become executer of the will and that should buy them some time. They will have to see if she had a previous will.
They Sheriff and Coroner arrived. They said it was pretty text book and it looked like an accident as stated. Josephine didn’t have any family with the exception of a couple of cousins whom she did not want to inherit anything. They weren’t sure what was going to happen. After the sheriff and coroner left, C.D. in formed Brooke that he was related to Josephine, he was her son.

May 1942 – A doctor is being called to a house to deliver a baby. The mother is 7 months pregnant, the baby is early. The doctor gave the mother something to knock her out. The baby was born but it was very small and the doctor said the mother would not have any other children. The other woman in the house told the doctor that the mother was unwed, and asked the doctor to bring the baby to an orphanage, it was better if the mother thought the baby had died. The doctor accepted a bribe to do this. (The timing is right for a pregnancy at the engagement party – was it Millie (although she had Marie) or maybe Varina?)
C.D. told Gabe and Brooke that he was Josephine’s son due to the fact that papers he got from the orphanage included a birth certificate that said parents unknown. He was brought there on May 5, 1942 and he was 6 months old. He had a picture of Josephine holding him and remembers her visiting the orphanage and bring him gifts. (Not exactly proof and the timing is off – my guess is that Josephine was the other woman at the house who told the doctor to take the baby to the orphanage).

Gabe and Brooke told the rest about C.D. claims (Varina wasn’t there). Louetta said she has them all booked for the 2PM fairy. Lizzie announced that she was staying on the island. With the story Josephine told them the night before, there is a story there. She got some interest from a magazine. Varina announced that she was going to live out the rest of her life on the island (Felicity was not happy about that). Shug took them down to Oyster Bay to show them around. Varina’s house needed work but Shug says they could stay with him and Louetta. She needs some of fuss after now that Josephine was gone. When they got back to the mainland, Gabe was staying in St. Ann to petition the court to be administrator of Josephine’s estate. He asked Brooke to dinner and made it known that it wasn’t work related. She turned him down because she wanted to see Henry but offered to go lunch with him. She thinks he is too old for her but her mother told her to give it a chance if she has any interest in the man.

Tue 18-Sep p 264 - 277 Ch 44 - 45 14
Brooke had to get a friend of Farrah’s out of jail when she got bad. It was a love triangle that went bad. She ended up going out “on a date” with Gabe. Farrah had to check him out and he met Henry when he came out and wanted to go with mommy. After the initial awkwardness, they had a good time and two hours passed. They went for a walk after dinner and he asked her out for the next Saturday. She would have to check with Farrah and see how Henry was doing but she left it open. He kissed her goodnight.

Wed 19-Sep p 278 - 295 Ch 46 - 48 18
Brook got a call from Louetta in a panic saying Josephine’s horrible cousins were there acting like the place was there. She called Gabe and left him a message and headed for the island. When Brooke got there, the cousins were yelling at Lizzie for going through the family papers. On whose authority, Gabe spoke up and said his as administrator of Josephine’s trust. He proceeded to make the cousins leave. He gave Lizzie one week with the papers and then she had to vacate. Lizzie and Varina decided to go to Savannah and see if they could find any information about C.D.’s claim about being Josephine’s son. They dragged Brooke along because she knew the area. They talked to some at what use to be St. Elizabeth’s but she was unable to give them much information. She sent them to talk to a 99 year old nun who may remember something.
